Illinois Brian Carlwell in critical condition after accident

The link references a message board, but I can find no mention of this on Champaign's newpaper or TV sites. Is this all a hoax? For the two kids involved, I hope it is. If not, they are in my prayers.

Illinois freshman center Brian Carlwell was critically injured in a car accident at around 1 am this morning. He is hospitalized at Carle Hospital in Urbana. He was a passenger in a car driven by sophomore Jamar Smith. Smith was injured slightly and was apparently treated and released.

Thanks for the news, Da Coach, and as always, you have the info on this up on BradleyFans way before I can even find a mention of it just about anywhere.

We will keep the kids in our prayers, but at 1AM last night it was a pretty rough time to be out driving.

I am curious about a couple things....

"For unknown reasons, Smith's car crossed the center line and struck a tree ... police are trying to determine why he crossed the street and struck a tree."

"Both were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where Smith was treated and released..."

"The Illini are off until a Sunday home game against Northwestern. Smith's status will be determined later."

It's a shame but I was thinking some of the same things. I mean it was 1 am, we're getting hit with a blizzard, that's just a recipe for disaster. Hopefully nothing else was involved then slippery roads.

There were a number of rumors circulating on internet sites about events related to this accident. We would prefer to keep speculation to a minimum unless reports have credibility or are confirmed. We appreciate our posters who have not succumed to irresponsible speculation and rumor like exists on other sites.

But here is a report that I saw earlier and is now confirmed.
Jamar Smith, was the driver of the vehicle involved in what appears to be a high speed accident in which multiple injuries, some serious, occurred. But Smith left the scene of the accident before police arrived. Apparently the car, despite severe damage, was driveable and Smith drove back to his apartment in Savoy, Illinois with the injured Carlwell. .

Here is more info. According to this release, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations Kent Brown, has said he cannot comment as to whether alcohol was or wasn???‚¬?„?t involved.

If alcohol was a factor, wouldn't there be a public record of this in a police report? Wouldn't there be a field test or a test done at the hospital? Shouldn't a driver involved in an accident, and guilty of leaving the scene of an accident have been ticketed for more than "improper lane usage"?

I have to say, and I am trying not to generate unwarranted suspicions here, that I hope for the sake of the players and the Illinois program that they come clean now with what happened and own up to things. I recall the special treatment given to 3 former and current players when they faced criminal charges in the past. If you or I had been involved in an accident like this with injuries and leaving the scene, I can assure you that we would have been cited for more than a simple lane usage violation.

Are they secretly meeting to decide what damage control they will employ? Are they consulting with their lawyers and public relations people to put the best spin on this? Maybe we'll know?

There may very well be alcohol involved but the media might be writing generously for the families of the player and the school, for now anyways. The media will change there tune once its confirmed that a U of I player won't die and all the icing comes off the cake.

Possibly not....since Jamar left the scene of the accident, perhaps he went to the hospital on his own or had someone else take him there.
Once he is a patient, then the results of his lab tests are NOT always readily available to the police. The police may have to subpoena the lab results before knowing if they are positive.

Where there is smoke... there is fire.

Drove to his Apt. parking lot, WTF? Give this kid some jail time or somethin, got a passenger nearly dying and he drives away probably delaying help arriving by 5-10 minutes at least. Still amazing he was able to drive it after the pics of that damage. No wonder a Lexus is so expensive.
