Illinois loses again

One other big upset - although not really since UK is not a good road team...
Kentucky goes to 1-3 on the road losing at Auburn 75-70

...and Auburn storms the court!!
All the gurus had Skal Labissiere as Player of the Year and guaranteed top draft pick...
but he doesn't even start and had just 4 pts & 2 rebs

Yes, nice game by Max. He seemed to have no problem against the Illinois big men with 16 & 8 in just 17 minutes.

... - here's a followup on Darius Paul who was going to be their starting center before he got booted ...
anyone interested in a further followup of ex-Illini Darius Paul...

after transferring from Western Michigan to Illinois, he then hopped around to juco (Lamar State-Port Arthur), then went to Hope College
But he didn't last long there and after just 5 games where he averaged 2 ppg, he was booted and scrubbed from their roster.

- but now he's finishing up his college career at Robert Morris-Chicago.

They are actually pretty good- 19-4 with a 17-game winning streak.
Darius Paul is putting up 18 ppg/8 rpg/and hitting 48% on 3-pointers (23-48)

Robert Morris has 3 campuses, and the RMU-Peoria team is coached by ex-Bradley Brave Bobby Ford.
https://www.rmueagles.com/coach/0/143.php

BUT RMU-Peoria is not very good this year - just 3-11....with 2 wins over RMU Springfield and one over a high school team

but RMU Springfield is not doing well at all.........and has to be perhaps one of the worst college teams in the nation
they are winless - 0-16
but only 3 of their losses are even within 20 pts
most are 40-50 point blowouts

Illini play horribly, shoot horribly and lose at home to Minnesota..
they drop to 3-8 in the Big Ten and Rutgers won today - so Illinois is only one game out of last place..
Quite the meltdown on the Illinois boards/..

He had the talent but had he stayed at ISU, I think he'd have had a better chance of playing in the post-season

There were reasons he left (had to leave).... and many of us observers of college talent KNEW he could play in the B10. He woulda dominated the MVC and dominated Wich St.... but he just couldn't keep his own locker clean of crap.

if anyone wants some laughs...go check some of the discussions on the Illini boards...
mulling over who they'd maybe go with as a new head coach if John Groce gets fired...

The options mentioned are truly amazing....the threads are >>50 pages...
Believe it or not I have seen all these names mentioned..
Sergio McClain, Tim Jankovich, Norm Roberts, Dan Muller, Rob Judson, Ben Jacobson, Tommy Amaker...and dozens more..

Most of those names have either NEVER made it to the NCAA even one time and some have never been a head coach at DI or had a winning season in DI!
Plus- I cannot imagine the Illini donors & fan base would want to risk the mid-major experiment again unless they get a guy who's shined in the NCAA tourney like Drew or Marshall.
Hiring a Dan Muller or a Ben Jacobson (guys who have really never recruited or landed NBA-Talent) would be like John Groce 2.0 and Illinois would continue getting upper-mid-major talent just like they've been getting.

There are occasional mentions of Bryce Drew, Lon Kruger, Cuonzo Martin, Gregg Marshall, Archie Miller, Tony Bennett, Dana Altman, Fred Hoiberg...
but most of those guys are already at far better spots being paid $2-3 million per year - (Hoiberg is getting almost $5 mil - are they serious?)

Three decent-sounding options that get mentioned are Chris Collins, Greg McDermott & Steve Wojciechowski but it would probably take >$3 per year to pry them away if they were even interested...

Any thoughts from the BU fan base? Currently the number of outstanding, "hot" midmajor coaches who they'd be able to lure away - is quite slim...and others who have tried getting Gregg Marshall haven't come that close.

Former Nevada/current Georgia head coach Mark Fox is a good coach, perpetual 20-game winner and on pace to do it again this year, post-season four consecutive years and 9 of his 12 years as head coach...
And yet almost every year the fans and the media rip into him and want him fired..

this first link likens him to John Groce...and how hard it is to please everyone in this business
