Former Iowa State star and former Chicago Bulls player Fred Hoiberg will be the new coach at Iowa State replacing Greg McDermott.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5140900 -This ESPN article contains the following mistake-
"He played four years at Iowa, finishing third in school history in scoring (1,993 points), first in 3-point field goals made (183) and third in steals (207)."
Hoiberg played for Iowa State, not at Iowa.

Hoiberg, 37, has no previous coaching experience. He was the Vice President of Basketball Operations with the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves and played 10 seasons in the NBA with three different teams after being drafted by the Pacers in the second round of the 1995 draft.

Hmmm.....he sounds almost exactly like Jim Les when he got hired, almost the same resume, except JL was at least an assistant in the WNBA and CBA.

-JL was what 40 or so when he got hired? Hoiberg 37
-JL pretty decent NBA player, so was Hoiberg, both good 3 point shooters.
-No previous head coaching experience for either
-Former star of the school for both

Obviously a terrible hire.

I always liked "The Mayor" when he was on the Bulls, good luck to him!

Actually, Hoiberg was the star of Ames!

I was living there when he played for Iowa State under the great Johnny Orr.

For some reason, reading this all I could think of was:

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Reminds me of the Clyde Drexler hire at Houston, and the Jim Les hire at Bradley. All were hired with zero coaching experience. Drexler has only been retired from the NBA for a few years, and Les had been working as a stock broker in California. Drexler failed miserably in 2 seasons at the helm in Houston; Les has had 2 successful seasons and 6 average to below average seasons. I can't see Hoiberg doing anything other than getting some hardcore Cyclones fans to donate for a year or two. There won't be any winning going on in Ames, that's for sure.

Once again this goes to the point I make about JL, name a better hire for that program. (If you'd like to, humor me and do it for IOSU and BU)

Was BU desperate when they hired JL? Were they in the same boat as Iowa St? I don't think they were. Not even close. There were plenty of better hires to be made if they really wanted to. This is an old and tired discussion, and not worth getting into.

Dude, the other option everyone wanted is still in the EXACT SAME JOB, If he was so good why did no one else snatch him up?

Just before the hiring of Hoiberg..
this Rivals article suggested Tim Jankovich as the new coach at Iowa State..........but there was a little stab at Jank in the comment by Paul Clark the head writer for Iowa State Rivals..

"Tim Jankovich
Head Coach, Illinois State

Jankovich is 71-30 with three NIT appearances in three years at Illinois State
and he also has head coaching experience at North Texas and Hutchinson
Community College. Prior to go to Illinois State, Jankovich was an assistant at
Kansas. He's also been on the staff of Big 12 schools Kansas State, Baylor,
Texas and Oklahoma State and he played for K-State in the late 70s and
early 80s. The well-traveled Jankovich is a little bit milquetoast as a
candidate but his win-loss record at Illinois State can't be ignored."

Others also thought Jank would be a good option...

More news.......
assistant coach TJ Otzelberger was highly coveted by McDermott and he tried to lure Otz to Creighton...but news out of Iowa State says he will stay there and work with Hoiberg instead of going to Creighton with McDermott.

And McDermott speaks to the topic of what's P'Allen Stinnett's status??
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/coll...81767_x.htm?utm_source=web&utm_medium=twitter

....I suspect he'll try to keep P'Allen and worry later about dealing with the behavior issues........
Recall that Michael Taylor got several do-overs after his arrests before McDermott finally ran out of patience...

I think this hire is about Iowa State and essentially getting "back to Iowa State ways". Look at the football hire, Paul Rhoads... yes I know he has a long resume but he is the essence of Iowa State and they brought him in to be long term, build pride in the program and hope that leads to wins and donations.

I am not huge on the no direct experience becoming a head coach in any sport, but Hoiberg has a long background in basketball and has been directly involved either as a player or in the front office since he left Iowa State. He also is when you think of Iowa State one of the names, parents of potential recruits, will associate with the program. I have a feeling he will work very hard... The exact opposite of Drexler who went to the Stan school of dedication.

Look for my money, I didnt think Les was the right hire when he got hired, but he did energize this fan base when he did get hired. And regardless, of how it is disected, he did coach this program to an appearance in the NCAA tournaments sweet 16. No one regardless of how much one wants to minimize that fact can take that achievement off his resume. Overall he has not provided the success I anticipated, but from all reports he works his A** off and is still after 9 years dedicated to getting this program to a different level.

I have no idea if Iowa State will or wont win but I guarantee this hire has energized that fan base and will produce alot beyond the basketball floor in the near future for the school.

Brian Gregory? Yes, I would take him and his record since 2003 over what we currently have. He has been a candidate for several other jobs. How many has our guy been a candidate for?

Let's be clear, the option people here wanted to hire was Wayne McClain. Also While Brian Gregory has had some success, 2 NCAA appearances vs. JL's 1 though JL went further and 2 first place finishes to JL's 0. He plays in a worse conference (over the last 8 years). He also just finished 7th in conference and GREATLY underachieved with a team during the regular season. To assume he would have been a much better than JL is pretty unfounded.

I really don't think Hoiberg is that bad of a hire. Having NBA ties is never a bad thing, he is a known quantity to alum, and the guy knows basketball. It is funny that this somehow got turned into a JL bashing thread...

I wanted the best, most qualified candidate. That wasn't Wayne. I was never a Wayne guy. If you believed he was really a finalist that's not my problem; Bradley was never going to hire him.

Unfounded? Gregory's record speaks for itself. More wins, more conference wins, more time in the top 25, more NCAA's, more NIT's, more championships. Let's not let the facts get in the way of a good discussion here, but it's not even a close comparison.

When Jim Les starts getting mentioned for and turning down BCS jobs let me know. I'm pretty sure Cross's phone hasn't been ringing asking for permission to interview.

I know people want a clear picture, but that's not an accurate statement. Most people I know were underwhelmed with either JL or WM. It was bad enough the process was the joke it was. But it can not be painted as either/or. . .because none of the above was pretty much how I read people's reactions once Gregory removed himself from consideration. In fact, Jones had more vocal support on the boards than either JL or WM.

I know that thought gets a lot of free play, but that was not the sentiment. There were not two distinct camps at that time. However, after JL was hired, I know a good number of people felt given the choice between the two of them we chose the wrong one. And because of that, the interpretation now is different.

Yes anyone that wanted JL or WM was thinking with their heads/hearts and not with thier basketball minds.

While BOTH a great guys and successful in many ways NIETHER should have been the top candidate.

When it came down to the final two, yes THATS when camps got divided and the myths started to grow.

And PLEASe, relax...I'm not slamming either guy. Like em both and NEITHER guy has to be ashamed or apologetic for what they have done over the years.

They just weren't top flight candidates for a top flight job.
