Isiah Thomas to coach again

Da Coach

Former NBA star Isiah Thomas, who destroyed the Knicks in his short coaching stint there, and also was sued for sexual harassment, may be in line for the head coaching job at Florida International University. No joke!
Until yesterday, Florida International already had a coach, but he was "reassigned"-

By the way, the Miami herald has a fan poll asking "How would you feel about Isiah Thomas coaching FIU basketball?"--
Here are the poll totals--

I can understand bringing in a person with name recognition to raise the profile of your program. But to bring Isiah Thomas?

Yeah, FIU's name made national news and ESPN might show highlights of his first few games. But I wonder if he'd be able to recruit well. Would a mother be able to entrust her son to a man who was involved in a high profile harrassment case? Plus I doubt many young players would exactly be in awe of Thomas nowadays.

I just got an ESPN Breaking News Text Alert that Andy Katz is reporting that Thomas has ACCEPTED the Florida Intl coaching job...

He had a pretty bizarre interview on ESPN this morning. He seemed to flip flip on a lot of issues, and was didn't seem very genuine in many of his answers to questions he was asked. They also asked him about his apparent suicide attempt awhile ago, and never gave a straight response. I think this move has a lot to do with media and exposure for FIU rather than because Isaiah is a good coach.

funny how the NY press, who has never liked Isiah since he isn't very open with them, is the source of those reports...and I am sure there's more than we are hearing...

99% of the time it is the RECRUIT who wants OUT when there is a coaching change...
yet, this is a kid who has NOT signed any LOI nor had he ever verballed nor made a public committment, whose coach is miffed about the way the kid is being treated.
But doesn't Isiah have every right to pursue and sign who he wants?
Anyway, the recruit, Rozier, has already signed a LOI with a different school, yet he's still complaining.

And who knows what really happened....as Thomas has just been on the job a few weeks, and yet he's already signed several really talented kids, probably more talented than the kid whose coach is whining here.
Three are juco All Americans and two rank in the TOP five in scoring nationally in NJCAA Division I.
Sounds a bunch of sour grapes.....

Sounds like it will be juco city down there...at least for the time being..

Any guess on how long Thomas will stay there?....I'm thinking 2 years

As long as they let him! ha

I can't think of any other job that Thomas would be offered. No NBA team wants him and the way things are going this was his best offer.

more breaking Isiah Thomas news...

5-STAR Latavious Williams

suddenly cancelled all plans to make his verbal to either Memphis or Georgetown
and took a quickly arranged visit to Florida International this past weekend..

"There will not be a press conference Monday for Latavious Williams.
A new school suddenly jumped into the mix with Williams, and the five-star prospect is visiting the school this weekend.
New head coach Isiah Thomas now has Florida International in the running with Memphis,
Kansas State and Georgetown for Williams, a 6-foot-7, 195-pound forward.
"I was going to have a press conference Monday because I was going to sign, but I pushed it back
a week because I'm not ready to sign," said Williams. "I'm in Miami right now visiting Florida International."

If Isiah can land a 5-Star kid, just maybe the folks at FIU can overlook a few flaws...

I had a feeling something like this would happen, and will continue to happen. In a couple years (if Isiah decides to stay that long) I think FIU will be the dominant team out the Sun Belt, a tough conference in itself. I could see them become the next mid major power. With Isiah notoriety and connects to the NBA, many big time prospects will give his school strong consideration. Also, they may feel they'd be able to dominate that league making their prospects for professional ball even more attractive.

Wouldnt that be the case for any mid or low major going after a 5 star player?

I think Isiah might do well early but eventually like everything else he has ever been responsible for it will all turn to crap.

Isiah Thomas was a punk when he played and is a phony loser now. How any recruit or his parents could look past or deny any of the off court accusations or his personal reputation is incredible.

The bottom line is Thomas has connections to the next level that most coaches don't and that by itself will attract kids. Also, it's in Miami so that's just more incentive!

You are right. I am sure he has alot of connections at the pro level and will use them in recruiting. And what more can be said about Miami and South Beach? Wow! :-o

However...... He has major issues with women. Has the attention of the National Organization of Women. Questions about he sexual orientation won't go away. Behind the scenes people have seen the temper tantrums and blowups when people disagree with him. He overdosed on drugs and tried to involve his daughter. His failures with the Knicks are well documented. All the smiles, grins, low key answers, and aw-shucks attitude people see on camera are phony. That is not the real person he is.

This is not the person I would want to educate, teach, or influence my 18-21 year old kid. I cant' believe kids and parents would want to learn from this guy. Yes he was a great player but has been a terrible parent, coach, and executive.

Some players may find the thought of getting high with your coach appealing.

I bet he recruits well there, but won't be a terribly good coach. Eventually he'll get busted for having sex with a young college lady and he'll be booted. Until then I can't say if he'll have much success, but I bet he'll do fine with recruiting, just a gut instinct.

Sheesh dude. I realize Isiah hasn't been a very good executive after his great playing career but you are really attacking him personally on stuff that hasn't even been proven to be true.

Questions about sexual orientation? Haven't heard that and who cares anyway.

Bad parent? How do you have any idea what kind of parent he is.

Overdosed on drugs? That seems a bit extreme.

Say what you will about his job with the Knicks and the CBA but the other stuff seems like all gossip and rumor mongering.

attack Isiah = perfectly OK and trendy
criticize anyone else = get attacked by other posters for being unfair....

If every college coach who fooled around with a co-ed got the boot there wouldn't be many coaches left.

The difference is..he'd get caught. And then others would step up and say that he had sex with them...and it would all snowball. Boom, they have no choice but to fire him haha.
