IU Cancels its Own Self-imposed Sanctions

Kelvin Sampson's chair is still warm, but Indiana realizes its self imposed sanctions are hurting
new coach Tom Crean's ability to recruit and land the blue chippers.
Solution......let's just trash those nasty old self-imposed sanctions!
Is anyone really surprised by this? So what does this tell us.....
that the real important things in life are replacing your 5-Star shooting guard, and 5-Star incoming SF!!

and in a strange twist, Kelvin Sampson and Tom Crean can save a lot of costs on realtors.
They can just swap houses. Sampson finds himself leaving Bloomington and going to Milwaukee,
Crean finds himself leaving Milwaukee and going to Bloomington!
 
Man, I can't believe IU is doing this. It almost seems like they're thumbing their nose at the NCAA. Hopefully the hammer comes down in June!

As much as I think this is crap... and then the NCAA will act lightly to top it off... it will tick me off.... but the Schadenfreude in me is tickled-in-the-tummy thinking about how all the UIUC fans will be furious.

In a recent interview with Jamil Wilson, who recently dropped IU even though he had Marquette among his favorites, said that it was because Tom Crean was going to where they had sanctions, and he didn't want to even take the chance...

So finally, proof that the sanctions are beginning to have some effect and penalize the guys who were cheating!

I think that it is strange that Indiana would do this. But, I don't really have a problem with it. Crean is not guilty of these infractions and until the NCAA rules against them, why hurt yourself? IF, and I think it is a BIG IF, the NCAA comes down hard on them then why punish yourself on top of that!?

There have been times that schools have imposed sanctions on themselves and the NCAA has still come down hard, so I don't think the self imposed stuff really matters to the NCAA. If they are going to do something they will no matter what the school has done to itself.
 
They will get a slap on the wrist from the NCAA.They might lose a few days recruiting and that will be about it.Everyone knew this since day 1.
 
Here is some breaking news out of Indiana.........

IU will have so few players on scholarship next year that they are getting desperate and looking for any possibilities.

--It turns out that senior DJ White has not yet signed with an agent.
Even though he would appear to be out of eligibility, there is one catch...
A couple years ago (2005-2006), he played in few enough games (5) that he gained a medical redshirt season,
and so he could have yet one more season of eligibility at IU. It is a long shot...as the lure of the NBA is strong and DJ is projected to go possibly somewhere in the late 1st round. But would staying a year help his chances? Likely not as he is coming of an All American season as it is.


--the second possibility is that Kyle Kuric, a player BU was after, has still NOT signed a letter of intent. He has verbally committed to Louisville but is being asked to walk on for a year before getting a scholarship. Now Indiana may offer the kid right now and he'd get some immediate playing time.

---the trend of coaches offering and getting commitments from kids as young as sophomores, freshmen, and even 8th graders is likely to continue and even mushroom, as coaches see it as a way to buy instant security and longevity. Bruce Weber instantly got critics off his back and bought himself at least 4-5 years more time at Illinois regardless of his on-court lack of success with his own players. Plus, if the kid fails to pan out, the scholarship can easily be yanked as we have recently seen.

--witness Billy Gillespie getting a committment Friday from a California 8th grader, and IU's Tom Crean just offered Indianapolis Pike's freshman Marques Teague, and now Wisconsin's Bo Ryan just got a verbal from a fairly unknown sophomore, Evan Anderson, a prototypical Wisky-type player

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana University has told the NCAA that its self-imposed penalties should be enough to avoid further punishment for improper phone calls made by Kelvin Sampson before he resigned as basketball coach.
The Hoosiers still face a hearing in front of the NCAA's infractions committee. Sampson resigned late last season, and new coach Tom Crean inherited a one-year extension of recruiting restrictions on phone calls and the loss of one scholarship for the upcoming season.
Sampson took the Indiana job in March 2006 and two months later was penalized by the NCAA for making 577 impermissible phone calls between 2000 and 2004 when he was the coach at Oklahoma. A second wave of charges involving phone calls emerged last October.
 
But IU has already modified and lessened one of their self imposed restrictions.
They granted new coach Tom Crean more off campus recruiting days. See the initial post in this thread.

as I have said in hundreds of other posts...wake me up when the NCAA actually takes punishment seriously or fairly in any case involving a BCS school - no matter how serious or how blatant the violations.

Expect a decision by November 26, so the NCAA infractions committee can all go home and have a nice holiday.
I expect some penalties so the NCAA won't be accused of being soft, but I don't expect anything that'll hurt recruiting nor anything
that'll prevent Indiana from rebuilding and being strong almost right away.
