Jeremy Fears - Out of BU?

As an Ohio fan and someone who knows Jeremy, perhaps I can shed some light to this:

Jeremy is an NBA-level talent. I'm not exaggerating here; there was a scout from the Spurs who came to a game against Western Michigan just to watch him play last season. He's an excellent defensive player (he completely shut Rondo down when Ohio played UK) and very fast.

His court vision is as good as anybody's in the college game. He is a gifted passer. He will get that ball to the big men inside and put it only where his man can get it. Quite frankly, he makes everyone else on the court better.

He has a great first step and can drive past pretty much anyone. He's the quintessential slasher and really disrupts defenses because he can and will dump the ball off after drawing a double team.

Quite frankly, we would not have found ourselves tied 60-60 against Florida with two minutes to play in the NCAA Tournament without him.

So what's the bad? Well, his jump shot is poor. That wouldn't be a big deal if he didn't insist on shooting it so darn much. I can't count how many times I would groan as he went up for a three-pointer he would brick. He also gets moody and tends to pout on the court. A lot of times, he wants to be the star and tries to do everything himself.

He has a tendency to turn his teammates off and not listen to coaches. His family has been a really chaotic influence on him. He also has a son and I think that is a distraction for him. With Jeremy, really, there's a lot of good and a lot of bad. I know that when he left Ohio, nobody in Bobcat uniform was sad to see him go.

Thanks o....I don't think anybody here doubted JF's talent. It was his head we all worried about. Your last paragraph pretty much sums up why he's no longer, at his loss, a Brave.

BU is family. We don't get the talent the big boys get and so JL has really made team ball a priority. No ONE player is above the system.

In some ways I feel sorry for JF. This was most likely his last chance to shine on a big stage. BU has started something special under Les and is headed for even more. JF had a chance to be a part of it and threw it away.

Hope he gets his life straightened out but if he couldn't do it here I wonder if he ever will.

O Zoner...I think every bit of what you say has been said before on this board and that
most BU fans already know Fears has the physical talent.
But overall talent also means having the ability to actually play on a team in a team format, not as an egotistical individual.

O Zoner...please read my post about Fears from March 22, 2006, over a year ago.

I also detailed the incident where an NBA scout travelled all the way from San Antonio to Michigan to watch Fears...
but guess what??

Fears didn't play and the NBA scout went home a little upset and frustrated, since Jeremy didn't play
in that game and his absence was totally unannounced.
And why didn't he play in the game? Well, it was because he thought he was a little too
good for his teammates and he was sitting out deciding if he was going to quit the team and transfer.
In the end, that's exactly what he did, and he cost himself an opportunity to be seen by the NBA scout!

Here is the text of my post from over a year ago:

"There is one story from back in Feb., that there was an NBA scout in the arena to watch Ohio play
at Western Michigan. He had flown all the way in to Chicago and then driven to Kalamazoo, just to see Jeremy Fears.
A few nights earlier against Kent State, Fears did not start and only played 5 minutes. When he didn't start the next game,
he became upset, then had the death in the family and he left. He was expected back for the Western Mich game but
did not arrive back on campus and missed the team bus.
Beyond that he never returned to Ohio."

This is the kind of thing that drives a person crazy. All the talent in the world with a posibility to become an NBA player and just throwing it away, but all the while not realizing he is throwing it away. Just think what a guy like Danny Adams or Will Franklin would have done with his physical talents? I think either of those guys would be playing in the NBA or at least a high Europeon league. What will Fears do with the talent he has been given? Well, as of now nothing... and the future looks worse. I wish him well, but I can't help but think of Ben Coupet. Where is he now? I would guess back on the streets where there is nothing but trouble waiting. :(
