This is not a hoops topic. For that I apologize for its placement; however, I am very surprised that very little has been mentioned by the university or anyone on this board regarding the passing of Coach Jim Spink.

Coach Spink coached swimming at BU from 1970 to 1987, coached golf from 1960 to 1977 and then again from 1982 to 1985 with a year off in '83 due to health issues. He also served as line coach for the football team from 1959 to 1970.

In his name is one of BU's endowed scholarship funds. The others belong to Fergie, Coach Stowell, AJ Robertson, Leo Schrall, Billy Stone and Jake Schoof. Coach is a member of Bradley's Athletic Hall of Fame.

I had the pleasure of playing golf for Coach from '82 to '85. He was certainly not a "swing doctor" or much of a teacher of the game but he was a phenomenal mentor and coach none the less. I was and still am very good friends with former swimmers and golfers that I know share my respect for Coach. He and my father knew each another from their respective high school coaching days in Jacksonville and Coach was like a father to me while I was at BU.

For those of you interested, visitation for Coach Spink will be Wednesday evening and funeral services will be on Thursday. Please keep Coach Spink and his family in your thoughts. He has been ill off and on for a long time now and will certainly be missed.

I just heard of his passing.
I can't find anything about it on the BU website or the PJ Star. Where did you hear about it from?

I actually had Coach Spink as one of my PE teachers back in the dark ages when all freshmen were required to take 2 semesters of PE!
Coach Spink was a great guy, and very loyal to Bradley. We will miss him.

Coach Spink was still teaching when I was there too.. great guy. I believe the obit is in today's PJS.

He will be missed...

I too saw the obit in today's PJStar. I got the news from John Kruft who has been a longtime friend of Coach's and is one of my sales reps up here near the Windy City

This is the second death of people who had a great influence on my life while I attended BU. Doc Friem this summer and now coach Spink. Coach Spink was insrtumental in my recruitment and commitment to Bradley. I played football and was friends with his son, Mark, and spent a lot of time at his house. He was all about the student-athlete. Condolances to his family!!

Friends,
I am sorry to hear the death of Jim Spink.
MY roomate Kevin McCarthy and down the hall
Tim Harris witness the affect of a "savage
Spink" workout. I am sure that Mr. John
Murphy, Mr Bill Maloney, and Mr Joe Ferrick
feel the same way. Jim was a gentleman
that did his best for our university. God bless
you Jim. Friend, you did everything we asked.
