JL and mental toughness

This isn't the first I've posted on this topic (on this or "the other" board), but with this incoming recruiting class, I thought it'd be a good time to revisit the topic.

I always come back to one key difference between JL and his two predecessors (this is not meant to bash the other two, but to raise a point of comparison).

I remember like it was yesterday the first sign of trouble from Stan Albeck. He was asked after Hersey's senior year how he was going to replace such an amazing talent. He said, "You don't replace Hersey Hawkins. You don't even try."

I understand that it was meant as a tribute to a great player, but I saw trouble: if you're not even going to TRY to get another star like that at BU, how will we maintain national prominence?

I don't think Les would ever say something like that. He'd be out telling five-star recruits they were gonna be the next Hersey Hawkins.

Then there was Mo. I've addressed this before, but would be curious whether anyone else who's been around a while noticed the same thing. The two Jims were asked a nearly identical question ten years apart . . . Mo in 1996, Les in 2006. In 1996, an ESPN analyst asked Molinari what it would take for Bradley to beat Stanford in the NCAA tourney (even though BU was the higher seed). Molinari said, "I don't know, a miracle? I'm not sure we can." Fast forward a decase: "How can Bradley beat Kansas?" Jim Les said, "You should be asking me how Kansas is going to beat Bradley. If they're gonna do it, they're gonna have to play really well."

The comment from Mo was my first indication that he wasn't the guy for this job . . . before that very comment, I thought he was a demi-god. But that irked me to high Heaven; would Coach K ever have said something like that? And the comment from Les told me that he WAS the man for this job.

This all brings me to a point (can you believe it?). I remember Mo's teams consistently playing scared, like they had way too much respect for the other team. As for Les, although I've seen his teams play sloppy (see years one through three), I've never seen them play scared.

I think Les recruits a different kind of player . . . not just good Christians who respect authority and display humility, but competitors who have a killer instinct.

The more I read about Maniscalco, Austin, Cole-Scott, Egolf, Collins, Thompson, Wilson, the more I see that the best thing this class has going, beyond raw skill, size, etc., is TOUGHNESS. In a year or two opposing coaches will be telling their players, "Don't give this team a lead. If you let them smell blood, it's gonna get ugly."

Well said, having grown up in Chicago, the only things I know about BU basketball pre-JL is other's memories, but I agree with your analysis of the guys Coach has recruited. From what I've seen we have a great group of guys coming in who are determing to bring success to BU, and I couldn't be more excited for the season because of that.

I believe we will see a higher level of talented recruits in the upcoming years. Bradley will continue to be at the top of the MVC for years to come.

I really liked Mo as a person and he had some good years at BU. I'll always respect him for HOW he did what he did.

I DO recall someone asking him something about BU and competing for a national championship (or something to that effect) and his answer was along the lines of fans needing to realize who we were. IOW the "reality" is we have to accept that BU can't compete with the big boys.

While that MAY be true to SOME extent why imply or say it?

BU was just 2 more upsets from the final 4...to me thats not too far away from something some believe will never happen.

JL believes "why not us".....no one will tell him he can't do something.

If anyone questions whether Bradley is improved under Jim Les, here are some facts. Despite the vast improvement in the quality of the MVC over the past few years, Bradley has become one of the best teams in the league.
Here are the results from the last 6 years (2001-2002 is included to show where Bradley was the year prior to Jim Les' arrival)--

Year............MVC finish....Final RPI
2001-2002.......8th...........235
2002-2003...Tie for 5th.....192 Jim Les' first season
2003-2004...Tie for 6th.....152
2004-2005.......8th...........142
2005-2006...Tie for 5th......33 (note-final RPI does not reflect NCAA wins over Kansas and Pitt)
2006-2007........4th..........38

Back to back post-seasons appearances and 22 wins in each of the last 2 years. Bradley does need to sustain this momentum and overtake SIU and Creighton to be on top of the Valley, but with this record of success and improvement nearly every season, I am sure it's just a matter of time before we see it.

Great, great points made about JL's mental toughness and "cocky" attitude. If you can dream it you can do it!

I went to school with JL and he is a young man (saying this makes me feel good about myself  ) who I hope we can keep at BU until he retires. I would like to think that he will build quite a dynasty and go down in history as BU's most successful coach ever.

Unfortunately, I fear he may look to move onto "bigger" and more lucrative things once his son either goes to college or graduates college (if he plays for BU  )

What will be "The Creme de la creme", if SIU and Creighton stay as good as they are BUT, Bradley is better than they are. GET IT?

There is no doubt Bradley has improved under Coach Les and that Bradley is headed in the right direction but IMO Bradley can not "continue to be at the top of the Valley" since they have not been at the top yet. We are almost there but we have yet to finish better then 4th in the regular season and we have not won in St. Louis so we are not at the top.

Hopefully next year we will be

That's it? That's all you will give to Jim Les and Bradley these last couple years? I think you are being overly hard on them. Everyone I talk to, including fans of other MVC schools, are quite a bit more complimentary of what Bradley has accomplished under Coach Les, despite this last 5 years being the best level the MVC has ever been.

Sorry I don't agree with your statement. IMO, Bradley has been one of the top teams in the MVC for the last 2 years, and they will be again this year. I listed their finishes above, here are some other numbers from last year--

RPI--
SIU....7
CU.....20
MSU...36
BU.....38
UNI....84
WSU..100
DU.....113
UE.....131
IlSU...138
InSU..139

Non-Conference RPI--
SIU....12
BU.....18
MSU...41
UNI....61
DU.....64
CU.....72
WSU..88
IlSU...100
UE.....104
InSU..108

SOS--
CU.....19
BU.....21
SIU....30
MSU...42
InSU...55
WSU...71
DU.....73
UNI....77
UE.....91
IlSU...102

Non-Conference SOS
BU.....15
CU.....24
SIU....41
MSU...56
InSU...55
WSU...173
DU.....190
UNI....194
UE.....207
IlSU...243

Bradley is also tied for most NCAA wins and most post season appearances the last 2 years. They are a strong 3rd in attendance, and have the 1st or 2nd rated recruiting class in the MVC this season. There are more factors tha give me and other BU fans optimism, but I wouldn't trade places with any other MVC team except SIU and CU over the past 2 years, and I like Bradley's future better.
With his own players, Jim Les has won 22 games each of the the last 2 seasons against the toughest schedule among MVC schools (BU's SOS was 2nd behind CU this year, and only MSU and UNI had stronger schedules last year). And again, Jim Les' record after 5 seasons is better than Dana Altman's was after his first 5 seasons, and everyone considers him a god among MVC coaches. You can limit your definition to BU's place in the standings, but I see a bigger picture.

I am not overly drunk on the Kool Aid ( ) to think we'll haul any 5-star recruits in. But Iman Shumpert is a 5-star recruit accordin to Scout. He is ranked as high as #10 nationally by some services and is in the Top 25 of nearly all of them. And he still continues to name Bradley on his short list with every interview he gives to the national recruiting experts.

There are quite a few others that are 3 and 4 stars.

DC....I understand where LB comes from. 44 wins the last twoyears is very inpressive. But I think headed in the right direction is pretty accurate. When we win the MVC and/or the conference tourney then we are at the top.

Also if we don't ever get higher then 4-5 in MVC then we will have very few chances to get in NCAA tourney.
I think we will...we HAVE to to be where JL wants us to be.

I think if you asked JL...he would say we headed in the right direction

OK. I'll buy that. But I like where Bradley has been for the last 2 seasons and where they appear to be headed the next few seasons as well. Really, only SIU has achieved greater overall successes the past 2 years than BU. I think we are now among the top MVC teams, and we'll stay there.

This is exactly what I mean. We have done great things the last two seasons but we need to keep going. 22 Wins is fantastic but winning the Valley would be better. When we talk about consistantly being at the top of the Valley, I measure it by our regulare season Valley wins and the Valley tournament finish. Please dont take this the wrong way, I think Coach Les is doing a great job and I am happy with were the program is going but I think even Coach Les would agree we are not quite there yet.

I like where we have been as well

I think this is another key year like a couple of years ago....the Sweet Sixteen year. A couple of new coaches and several new players will be challenging to establish chemistry but I'm confident BU will be toward the top of the MVC when it's all over.

I likem where BU had been the last 2 years.

This is a key year for BU like a couple of years ago. With 2 new coaches and several new players, establishing chemistry will be challenging but I am confident JL and crew will pull it together by the start of conference season
