Kansas assistant Tim Jankovich to be new ISU coach

Sounds like a good hire. Was an Asst at Vandy - so a tie to Stallings?

If he is the recruiter for Self, the MVC better look out.

well the recruiting just got a lot harder for him though, I think its easier to sell the Jayhawks than the Redbirds.

Mac....I could recruit kids to KU.

He can start by recruiting Osiris Eldridge and Bobby Hill. I was hoping for a better prospect and a bigger name. I hope this is the right guy. We'll see.

Great choice. Jankovich was an assistant at Illinois with Bill Self. His coaching bio is impressive--

Except for bolting North texas when the competition got to hot. that's a big concern for myself and a few other Redbird fans. Outside of that, his resume is impressive and he's worked under some good coaches. Like I said, I hope it's the right choice, but we could have done better in my opinion.

I hope he proves me wrong.

Yes, point taken.

But, is he the recruiter for Self? And was he the one that got the 05 Illini players? Then he is good.

Because... not just anybody can recruit Illinois (BWeber and his staff taking a lot of criticism).

And let's take this another step further... ask any Illini fan and they will tell you Self is cheating over there. So, if this guy knows how to cheat like they do at Kansas... then the MVC is in trouble.

I'm sure he recruited a lot, but I think Joe Dooley was their lead recruiter if I'm not mistaken.

Danny I will like to hear you're thoughts on this.

ISU fans really feel like they will be very good next year....what if they finish .500.

To me the guy is coming in with no room for error.

Bare minimum is getting out of the playin game....if that doesn't happen, and I don't think it will be as easy as some think...look out.

Cooksey is right, recruiting may not be his strong point. He is Kansas's #1 Asst, but he's known more for X's and O's than recruiting.

Most of the time when a new coach comes into a program, he will prefer to get rid of as many players as possible to free up slots for his own recruits. Not just the first year, since he won't have time to recruit many kids, but also the 2nd year. He might be able to land a player or 2 this spring from his recruiting connections at Kansas, but the big recruiting year will be 2008.

But coaches don't worry about losing the first couple years, since there will always be a "honeymoon" period. In fact, if they have a team that fans expect wins from (like Jim Les did in 2002), it may actually hurt the progress he would like to make. People will expect him to play and win with Porter's kids, and the rebuilding will be slowed down. And just like happened to Jim Les, a lot of "fans" were not patient enough when that happened and wanted to get rid of him after his first 2 or 3 years when they didn't see enough wins.

I hope ISU fans are patient with him, and I wouldn't expect a lot of success the first couple years.

I know you directed this at Cooksey, but I'll chime in too.

Assuming (hoping and praying) we keep everyone, then we will have the pieces in place for a good year. We will have a good amount of talent and experience, and can hopefully add another couple good players with our remaining 2 schollies. I agree, getting out of the play-in round is a must. We almost got out of it this year but oh well.

If we retain everyone on the roster and finish .500, I would be rather dissapointed. There is a chance for us to have a strong year next year, but like Cooksey aluded to, we must concentrate on keeping our roster intact. If we do, then thats a good first step. Time will tell on this hire, but again the potential exists for immediate success IMHO.

LOST SCHOLARSHIPS

The NCAA???‚¬?„?s decision to strip Kansas University???‚¬?„?s men???‚¬?„?s basketball team of one scholarship for the 2007-08 and ???‚¬?„?08-09 school years took coach Bill Self by surprise.

???‚¬?“To be candid, we did not anticipate that would occur,???‚¬?? Self said after learning booster Don Davis???‚¬?„? providing benefits to players Darnell Jackson and J.R. Giddens ???‚¬??? and three other boosters providing graduation gifts to departing seniors ???‚¬??? resulted in KU???‚¬?„?s program being allotted 12 scholarships instead of 13 for the next two seasons.

So it appears the fix was in.
Sheahon Zenger and Jankovich have ties at K-State that go back many years.
It is clear this is the guy AD Zenger wanted all along, and that the phony,
token posturing by calling the Black Coaches Assoc. was just a charade.
Were there any other candidate considered?
Was any minority candidate even considered or interviewed?
It appears not, and I wonder where is the outrage that we saw when Bradley made its hire in 2002?
Will we see newspaper columns blasting ISU for not hiring Wayne McClain?
http://pjstar.com/stories/032007/ISU_BCMR24N2.076.php

PS-- In Bill Liesse's article, he reiterates that as of yesterday, Wayne McClain had not even been contacted about the ISU coaching position.
So did Zenger make any effort to interview anyone besides his hand picked guy?
Does that bother anyone?

Thanks Bert.

I am also saying Illini fans believe Self is cheating in the present day.
