Keys to the Game

How many recall the familiar feeling from last year of falling well behind early, then fighting all the way back only to run out of gas and lose by a few?

I think most of our losses last year went like that. So here's what I think are the keys to every game this season. Time will tell...
Top three on my list are the main ones...

1- defense- NOT allow them off to an early lead, contain their 3pt shooters and keep them from getting easy layups, hold them in the 60's
2- we need to shoot the three well and MAKE OUR LAYUPS- we had way too many missed layups and missed dunks last year
3- limit turnovers, no stepping out of bounds on the sidelines and throwing fancy passes that don't connect
4- Need to rebound well - do not allow gobs of offensive rebounds to the opponent
5- find a go-to guy who can get a bucket or a trip to the FT line like Jaquan did

I won't be surprised if Saint Louis does to us like what they did last year. They are experienced, big and shoot very well. It will be a good challenge.

These are really good keys!

I think last season we were REALLY strong in turnovers for most games, but the ones we lost wasn't so good. Wheels and Quanny did a great job handling the ball.

REBOUNDING to me is the biggest thing we need to see improvement in. 3-point shooting as well - not just from 2 guys like happened last season. Having 4-5 guys who shoot around 40% or better would help a lot!

The ball movement last year in Valley play IMO was not very good. The previous 3-4 seasons we were sharp and had good flow in our offense. There were several games last season where the PGs just dribbled for 10 second and then tried to make something happen. Need more passing and inside-outside movement, which to be honest, hasn't been a staple of Bradley hoops since the mid 90s.

- no doubt - would love to have lots of great 3-point shooters, but we did have three guys last year
who shot over 37%, and four who shot 37% or better in conference play -
it's what kept us in a lot of games, since we regularly got outrebounded.

Maybe I just couldn't remember that last season.
I know Alex and Bully hit better than 40%. Who else shot over 37%? AJ perhaps?
Montana shot the 3 well in a handful of games, but thought he was inconsistent across the season.

Timo really needs to improve as he may have been only around 25% from behind the arc.
BUT we do have a few other guys who might be able to step up from the perimeter like Grill, Race, Seastrunk? (Not really sure actually) Trevon will obviously be the sniper from what I've heard, but needs to take more shots than last season.

Corey Thomas hit 39% and AJ shot 37% in conference play while Alex & Jaquan were hitting over 40%
also both Wheeler and Burch hit between 34-35% - still above national average in DI, which was 34.1%.

Alex was the one you could count on towards the end of the season. Cory was not great as far as contributing his last season. Bully struggled against taller athletic guards. AJ was very inconsistent a long with Burch plus Wheeler struggled too against taller guards. We have to be better as far as taking good shots, defending the 3 and stopping layups and rebounding. I do think we have addressed the part of bringing in taller guards, more athletic inside players that can rebound plus defend against the layup. Shooting the 3 and guarding against it are major concerns.
