Lance Stemler

Tornado, I have to agree with Money on this one. If calling someone a bum, as the original thread did, isn't bashing him I don't know what is. Of all the players you named, Lance is the only one I can remember being bashed.

It all depends. If you're from Brooklyn calling a guy a bum might just be the way to show someone you love 'em ;)

He is just one voice, one opinion, and I don't share it.
A lot of people were negative towards Danny Granger, and even I was upset by the way DG acted towards BU, but in time...the discussion ran its course...

It's incredible the hatred for Lance on this site. I was watching him score 15 and pull down 4 boards in 32 minutes of action in my Stemler #22 jersey last night rooting for him all the way. Give him a break he's a great kid and if you don't think he could play for Bradley you probably live in Normal, IL.

First of all I DO NOT live in Normal!
On many occasions, while at Bradley, Lances shot had trouble finding the rim. Yet alone the hole. He looked like a deer caught in headlights.
On the radio Coach Stowell, insinuated that he was a 3 0'clock player.
Great in practice, but once the lights went on, they disappear.
I am sure Lance is a fine young man, but he could not shoot the basketball while at Bradley.
Perhaps T or Da Coach could research his shooting stats while here. I bet they are dismal!

SURE, as he only played one season at BU
He appeared in 12 games, 5.4mpg, 3-17 (.176) from the floor, 1-12 from 3-point range (.083)
4-6 on FTs, 11 rebs (0.9rpg)1 assist, 5 TO, and an overall average of 0.9 points per game.

That was not only the worst of all scholarship players in 2004-2005, no scholarship player ever recruited by Jim Les has done worse!

I thought that Lance was brought in as a potential "diamond in the rough" with the last scholarship as due to injuries it had been at least 1 year, if not 2 since he last played competitive basketball. Most any player would be rusty, just look at Singh's numbers from last year.
Jim saw the potential of Lance and was first to take the risk, it just took longer than expected to develop.

Point counter point.
Thanks for the info!

Really? Did Ray Brown ever even put up any numbers and didnt he smoke up a year of eligiblity then get kicked off the team after the smoke out year. Ill put Ray Brown in the category of worst scholorship player ever recruited by Jim Les.

I agree with you HTB

As a personal friend of Lance and a frequent visitor to this board who has to read several topics that put him down I feel that since he can't/won't defend himself, that somebody should.

He gave his all to BU while he was here, anyone who disagrees either is clueless or in denial. it wasn't a good fit and he made the most of his second opportunity. I have experienced many sentiments about several past players where if they left the Hilltop it was like a slap in the face to the program and the fans. Trust me, Lance enjoyed his time at BU, but he felt it was better to go back to JUCO and develop some more. I think starting for a top 25 team that is also a historical college basketball powerhouse would prove that he made a good choice, but it's laughable at how many people here think he is a "bum." Nobody at IU plays harder or does the small things like Lance does. Not everybody has to score 30 a game or get 15 rebounds. That's what Eric Gordon and D.J. White are for. Correct me if I'm wrong, but somebody has to screen, pass and do the other things for these superstars. Quite often you'll see Lance on the floor going for loose balls, taking charges or making other "energy plays" that don't show up in the box score. You'd think that people would learn after the severe lashing of J.J. Tauai his first couple of years at BU that role players who play with intense energy have their role in big time college basketball, but apparently some people have not learned that. Reading that he is not a DI player is slightly funny considering that he started almost every game for the Indiana Hoosiers last season.

Does anyone think that Lance really cares about what somebody behind a computer in the Tri-County area really thinks? Doubtful...he and starting role on a top 15 ranked team could care less I'm sure.

All good points edmondo. But I am almost certain he would have never been booed by the Bradley fans had he stayed. What's up with IU fans booing one of their own? They're supposed to be so knowledgeable about the game. What do they know that you don't?

Chico, it's ok to call kids on other teams a bum, just not Bradley players...

Murph, the conditions LS transferred were completely different than D. Granger and I don't see anybody calling him a bum. I don't wish him well in his pro career after what he pulled on Bradley and his teammates, but I guess I'm not into name calling.

.....how many people here think he is a "bum"

I think Edmondo makes many good points, and I also couldn't believe the kind of negatives we'd routinely see about JJ Tauai, Marcello Robinson, Brandyn Heemskerk, etc....
ALTHOUGH....I might point out, that all of those comments were on another board...NOT THIS ONE....
Only one post here ever used the word bum....and that's unfortunate, as I am certain nobody else here feels that way....
(ps-- do a search and you'll find only ONE post ever who uses the word bum in reference to any college player anywhere)

As examples...here are some of the earliest posts about JJ on BradleyFans.com (which did not exist before Jan of 2005)

They are all quite positive and even oppose the negative posts seen on a certain other board....but then most of the fans over there are anti-Bradley.

Tornado, I was not speaking specifically about this board, but just Peoria basketball fans in general. We have to remember that these are 18-22 year old kids who generally are out of their parents houses for the first time ever and really have no idea of what they want to do with their future. I know that when I was that age I was as fickle, if not more so, than any of these players who transferred away from BU. It does no good to say things like "good riddance," or "we're better off without them." Just thank them for their time on the Hilltop, the hard work they performed while they were here and wish them luck in the future. That's all that really needs to be done.

I can't disagree with Edmondo here. Danny Granger is something of a special case because of some of the circumstances... but I'm over that. A guy like Lance leaving, just because he didn't feel it was working out, well... he's an adult, he can do what he likes. I don't know of anything he did or said to belittle BU after he left, so there's no reason really to discuss him after that. (I don't mind seeing updates on how he's playing)

and I think you can tell by all the posts we have regarding how guys like Ray Brown, JFears, MRembert, etc... are doing now....I think it shows most of us really still admire these kids and wish them well.

Tornado, I know that most people on this board really do care about past players and wish them well. It's the small minority who choose to take the low road that frustrate me.

Huge game tonight in C-Dale. Not too many ranked teams want to come to SIU and play a non-conference game so the general consensus around town is that there will be plenty of pre-game beverages and it is going to get crazy, especially with an afternoon playoff football game today as well.

Of course you will find me in the IU section proudly supporting the Hoosiers. Because I'm for BU and whoever is playing SIU these days.
