Loss to W. Carolina will not disqualify our NCAA Tournament chances

I admit I think about March a lot more than I should, because it really ought to be realistic for this program to make it every few years. Still, can we put this talk on the backburner for a while? Especially after we lost to a (pretty good) Southern conference team at home?

The Illinois win was outstanding, but we've seen enough to know that is a team that struggles getting in an offensive flow. They don't always use their posts. The offense from the PG position is spotty. Their shooters have also had some struggles, maybe because it is too easy to key on them. They don't make free throws. Defensively, they have had some good moments, but they don't bring it every game and until they do they aren't elite there. They have to fight like heck to a draw on the boards. They turn it over a little too much for having so many experienced guards.

I'm not saying they are bad. There's just nothing they do that you can hang your hat on and say with confidence they will do effectively day in, day out. What you think their strength is this game may well be a problem next game. NCAA teams have something, or a couple somethings they can count on doing well almost every time out, whether it is defending, rebounding, taking care of the ball....

So all this obsession about their "resume" completely misses the point. It's looking at it from 50,000 feet when the real answers are found in the details. I do it myself, way too much. They just got to get a lot better.....or at least a lot more consistent. After a loss against Western Carolina, can't we just leave it at that?

Thank you for the thoughtful post. Yes, I hope we can leave it at that. :)

There is no reason to expect not to win every home game unless its a Michigan St type of game or I was expecting our team to play on Thursday. If our team is good enough to beat a team that could finish in the top 25 then we should expect to win every home game this year in conference and especially out of conference

My thoughts exactly.

I posted this in another thread just before I went to the game.
Pretty Simple Here Our court, our ball, our fans and our win
"3 out of 4" 75% Better than the braves shot free throws:-P

Agree completely. This is my expectation also.

Our at large hopes can be revived in the Valley season if Les gets his head out of his butt and teaches these players how to shoot FREE THROWS!!!!!!! Get that fixed and then dominate the Valley and were still good.

Sorry, a college coach can make a player work on their free-throw shooting...but a player learns how to shoot loooonnnngggg before they ever get to this level.

That's true, but practice makes perfect. This teams radically inconsistent FT shooting is a possibility of not enough FT shooting in practice. Maybe concentrating to much time on the D which Les continuously harps and raves about.

I never thought we would be a lock for the NCAA. I always thought we would have to win the MVC to get in regardless. Next year is the year I was pointing to but if this is the type of performance we can expect I'm downgrading my expectation. I was not going to have a drink tonight but I needed a few glasses of wine to keep my blood pressure in check.

At large bid? NCAA bubble hopes?

-> loss to a SoCon team at home

*pop*

Win the MVC tourney or saddle up for another spirited run in the CBI, CIT, or XYZ Tourney.

That's where we stand...again.

Wow.....so now there is no mention at all of the NIT (unless that's considered an "XYZ Tourney"). We either win the MVC tournament or miss both the NCAA and the NIT? Even if we win the regular season? That would be very interesting!

And how does anyone see this team going 14-4 in conf??? Are you kidding? What last night proved to me was that our coach doesn't know when to call a timeout, we still can't shoot free throws, Maniscalco can't hit shots in the first 36 minutes of games or defend against other team's better players, and our upperclassmen will struggle against other senior and junior-laden teams(UNI, WSU,CU) in conference. I'll still stick with 12-6 as best case scenario, but more than likely we will only win 2-3 roadies in conf and stumble once or twice at home, so our usual 10-8 matinee appearance is a better bet at this point. At what point does C+/B- not cut it anymore?

See you at 2:05 on Friday in St. Louis!

Unfortunately, last night it came to me this team maybe playing to its potential. The Illinois game was the exception, not the rule.

If BU can't find a way to win at home vs WC, I struggle to see how it will win on the road consistently in the Valley this year. Whoever said 10-8 for BU this year in con play, which should be good enough for a 6th place finish in the Valley BTY ;) , is a modern Nostradomus!

Coaches can't teach players to shoot???? Weren't JL supporters saying one of JL's strengths as a coach was his great shooting should allow him to teach his players how to shoot better. I'll have to search the JS archieves.

I guess coaches will just have to recruit players who can shoot better:idea:

Tornado was right, BU's preseason schedule is way tougher than we, or apparently even BU players, thought

Sorry, I guess I just fell off the positive thinking bandwagon again...

I was never on it. I live in reality (no offense intended). It's a sad and sometimes dark place, and a place that many on this board fear and refuse to recognize.

We're not disqualified until we're disqualified, but I would say this significantly decreases our chances. We all know "mid-majors" face huge problems getting recognition. We really need a better resume than a Big Ten school all things equal. The only reason we got an at large bid in 06 was because of our win streak combined with the selection committee having a thing for mid-majors that year.

Not that we cant compete, we're just the "red headed step child" as they say. We have to work harder and be better for the same chances.
