Lowery staying at SIU-7 year extension

Great for SIU and Lowery, keeping class and great coaching in the MVC, i'm happy for both, the Death Valley reigns on!!!!

Congrats to Chris Lowery...he is living the dream. The trustees and university admins obviously didn't care about the library renovations or anything like that as long as the basketball team was a winner.

Again, congrats to Lowery. He's the head of his alma mater, and being paid handsomely for it. This is very good for the league. If Dana stays put, the coaching continuity stays strong in the league, which means that in the long run we will remain a top league, both in RPI and performance. Jim Les is a MAJOR part of this, but keeping guys like Dana and Lowery are just as important from a league-wide perspective.

This doesn't mean Lowery is staying.
If anything, it means the University knows he might be leaving and is pulling out all the stops to prevent it.
And Lowery can use this maneuver to make his other suitors come up with bigger offers.
Last year Greg McDermott signed a BIG raise and extension with UNI, then weeks later left for Iowa State.

Big money contracts like this usually do contain "out clauses" that allow the coach to leave to take particularly desireable jobs. But it does show that Lowery wants to stay at SIU.
Is he making more that Painter now?

How does it show he wants to stay?
It shows SIU wants him to stay.
It is just good to sign it because it pays him more if he doesn't leave and might still allow him to leave if he gets a better offer.
It is win-win to sign it.

what is the difference between coach les signing an extension after our sweet sixteen run and lowery doing it this year? both are coaching at their alama mater. i don't see the difference. don't you think coach les wants to stay at bradley?

I think Coach Les wants to stay. The difference, I think, is that Coach Lowery has made some comments in the media that seem to say that he's interested in "moving up" in the coaching world.

It could go either way - maybe those things were said to get the ear of those at SIU so that he could get this raise and contract extension. On the other hand, maybe he is interested in the other jobs and now has a better base line salary upon which to negotiate with the big boys.

Just like I think alot of what is "leaked" on the recruiting trail by players to the recruiting gurus is just for the purpose of upping their value or self marketing.

With guys like Lowery, Turgeon, Altman all making $.7M and more, trust me that the BU coach will deserve a reworking of his contract.

i'm just happy that the mvc is trying to move up in status and keep their successful coaches. sometimes it takes paying your coach more money to keep him from leaving for a major university and seasoned basketball program. not that siu isn't seasoned, it's just that they are a perenial power in a mid major conference and lowery has great a great opportunity to coach at a major school. it shows that siu values their great basketball and hopefully will encourage other mvc teams to develop successful programs and reward their coaches within this conference.

Les will get his contract re-worked after next year when Bradley wins the MVC.

I will go on record with a prediction.
SIU fans are fickle, and start bellyaching as soon as the Salukis lose a game or two.
Last year they wanted to fire Lowery and start from scratch when SIU lost a couple games to cupcakes up in Alaska.
And I even saw a few gripes from fans early this year when
they lost 3 games early in the Valley race.
After anteing up 700K they are going to be even more demanding of a winner year in and out.
Without Tatum and Young they might struggle early and watch out for the boo birds.

Well, you would think $750,000 would be good enough for many coaches. Yes, it's not $1.5 to $2 million, but you would think that's more than enough for him and his family to live off of for many years!

Let me tell you that there is a thing called ego. Most head coaches have them, and some are quite big.
A coach's salary could be more than he ever thought he would get, but if there are other coaches in that league who are making a lot more, then that coach will think he's getting cheated. It is not about what is a good contract, it's about what people are paying for other coaches who are at a similar level.
