More strange things have happened...Not saying he won't get the extra year, but you never know with how the NCAA operates some times. Rest of the team better toughen up, can't afford any more injuries. As an outsider I saw Bradley as a top four Valley team before the loss of TB. Without him I saw Bradley as middle of the pack. Without SM I see Bradley in the lower few teams. Hate to say it as I love when Bradley and ISU compete at the highest level, but I just don't see that this year. Best of luck to SM and TB.

That thought has crossed my mind also. Get well Sammy you deserved to go out in style. I've loved the way you play and what you've brought to BU. If Jim had goals, like we've all heard rumor or not,it would be impossible to meet with both Sammy and TB gone for the year. Go Braves
But how do you blame a congenital heart defect and bad ankles on a strength coach. Maybe a medical trainer with the ankle injury recovery, but don't see the strength coach.
If we were talking pulled muscles or lack of physical training, I could see it. I just think JL is JINXED!
You are correct about Taylor plus a lot of other possibilities , DSE is going to show everyone that he can do a good job at running the point, we need to realize that hi is only a sophomore and will make some mistakes yet his plusses will outweigh his minuses, any chance A.Davis starts playing?
It would be really easy to just give up on this season but this team still has some good players and hopefully the mentallity to overcome these obstacles.

I haven't seen anyone do that. However, there's something to be said for recruiting depth.
Someone OTOB said it best (paraphrasing):
BU brought 2 PG's in the year after Sammy (Norris and McCain). The staff tabbed McCain as their #2 PG and even started him as the PG most of the year allowing Sammy to play the 2. One guy transferred and emerged as a DI starting point guard elsewhere, while the other "flamed out".
As a coach, you sometimes have to make decisions that bring about consequences. At the end of the day, those consequences impact results and for that, yes a coach is responsible.

I keep seeing people say things along the lines of "if" Sammy received a redshirt.
Can somebody give me an example of a player being shut down due to an injury where they have played under 30% of the season's game and been DENIED a medical hardship waiver?
From everything I have seen, this is an open and shut case and I can't find one single reason he would be denied (except for the overarching "the NCAA does some weird stuff...")

I do believe there are only two ways. If the school can't provide adequate documentation that it was a season ending/unable to play kind of injury, or if the player already used a regular redshirt year. After Sam Singh, I think the department has enough experience with medical redshirt applications.

precisely -- these, plus Andrew Warren's 5th metatarsal stress fracture, Dodie's fracture of both bones in his forearm, and Will's sudden total ACL tear -- cannot possibly be blamed on the kind of conditioning the trainers do...
The medical hardship waiver is granted case by case by the NCAA based on three criteria..
1-season ending injury or illness (thus not allowing player to return that same season)
2-must occur in the 1st half of the season (if plays even one minute in 2nd half of season, then is ineligible)
3-cannot have played in more than 30% of scheduled games (BU has 30 games this year counting BB - thus Sam could conceivably play in 9)
Here's the exact wording from the NCAA manual (pg 137)
14.2.4 Hardship Waiver. A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference
or the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet for reasons of “hardship.” Hardship is defined as an
incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised:

(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any two year
or four-year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior year
in high school; (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 11/01/01, 8/8/02)
(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with
the NCAA championship in that sport (measured by the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition
not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first
scheduled contest or date of competition of the designated official NCAA championship playing season in
the applicable sport or the number of completed contests or dates of competition) and results in incapacity
to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective
8/1/01, 4/3/02)
(c) The injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three contests or dates
of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the
institution’s scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only scheduled or
completed competition (including exempted events but excluding scrimmages and exhibition contests identi-
fied as such in the legislation) against outside participants during the playing season that concludes with the
NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that
sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the number
of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled
or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/14/97

Why couldn't Sammy just take a regular red-shirt year? Isn't he still within the requirements to do so?
no for a regular red shirt you can't appear in a game... Even an exhibition unless you're a freshman.

While I don't know specifics offhand, I know a football player was denied last year from Oklahoma or Oklahoma State because their problem was determined to be chronic.

yes-- DeMarcus Granger, Oklahoma football player..
He missed his entire first year 2005-2006, due to a bad back
he came back to play full THREE seasons in 2006-2007, 2007-2008, and 2008-2009.
Then just when he expected to get a 5th year for his final season of athletic eligibility, he was denied by NCAA...
and although the details of his NCAA ruling are not made public, the reports said that his loss of his first year at college was due to a congenital condition (back problem he was born with) and not due to anything acquired while in college.
So -- it is possible the NCAA can rule a condition was something a kid was born with....so go figure..

here's another example...
the kid's evidence that was supplied to the NCAA was deemed insufficient to prove that the injury was season ending...in other words, they concluded his problem wasn't bad enough to miss the rest of the season even tho the kid and his doctors thought it was...
