Max Bielfeldt chooses Indiana

Max transfers to Indiana-
http://www.indystar.com/story/sport...ichigan-commits-to-indiana-hoosiers/28380783/

Last year at Michigan, Max had his best year by far, 5.1 ppg and 3.6 rpg in about 15 mpg. His first 2 years, he barely played and averaged about 1 ppg.
I wish Max the best of luck, but from following Tom Crean's teams for years, he does not run his offense through his post players, unless the have NBA-caliber talent. Nearly all his teams' scoring in recent years has come from their guards. But now this year, Indiana has landed a 4-star and a 5-star freshman big men. I am sure Max knew that, but I just do not see Max getting as much playing time as he did at UM, or putting up as many points as he did at Michigan.

No surprise, Crean really loves Max's calves!!

Seriously, best of luck Max. Sorry it didn't work out for you and BU.

I hope your extra year with IU is everything you have hoped for.

Article from Indiana Rivals site about Max-
https://indiana.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1771341

It is a premium article, so most may not be able to access it. Here are some points-

Indiana added frontcourt depth and championship experience with the commitment of Michigan transfer Max Bielfeldt.

IU also added a player who says he's ready to work.

"I'm not sure yet. I know I'll put in the work and if I put in the work, I feel I can earn minutes. It's a good team. I know nothing's going to be given to me and I'll have to earn it," Bielfeldt said.

"The big things Indiana offered were the Kelley School of Business, which is a great school, and obviously the basketball team is going to be really good," he said.

"I think I fit in well with the guys, fit in the system and fit in with what coach Crean wants to do."

IU needed frontcourt depth after the dismissal of 6-foot-9 Hanner Mosquera-Perea and 6-foot-7 Devin Davis.

"I think I'll fit in well being a bigger guy who can play inside and can shoot a little outside," Bielfeldt said.

Indiana has one scholarship remaining for the 2015-16 season. The Hoosiers are one of the top schools recruiting 5-star 7-footer Thon Maker, who said he will finish his credits to be college eligible in December.

Indiana expects one of their incoming recruits, Thomas Bryant, a powerful, possibly one-and-done 5-Star big man to take the bulk of the minutes in the low post and Max is projected as his backup.
Sure, there may be injury and maybe Max get more chance but he's also stepping into an extremely uncertain spot and Tom Crean is known to sell incoming recruits on playing a ton then reneging on such promises - see Matt Roth and quite a few others who got Creaned

Plus, if they land the other 5-star big man they are still pursuing, seven footer Thon Maker, it makes minutes even more scarce for Max. Even he acknowledges that in the Rivals article I posted above...
"I'm not sure yet (regarding his expectations). I know I'll put in the work and if I put in the work, I feel I can earn minutes. It's a good team. I know nothing's going to be given to me and I'll have to earn it"

Seriously doubt they will hang his shirt from the rafters after he leaves. He will get a lot of "perks" in Bloomington but will never see much floor time. Crean can reel them in but can't elevate their play or fit square pegs in round holes. A recruiter, not a Coach.

he will have a good game or two and everyone will say that proves he made the right choice...

Matt Roth had one good game and everyone claimed it proved he was a Big Ten talent and made the right choice...
whatever..FWIW, Jordan Swopshire had one good game - so did TCS

Wish the Braves would have had Matt Roth instead of Swopshire or TCS.

Indiana coach Tom Crean speaking in Indiana this week really praised Max..

"Crean touched on various topics with the 2015-16 roster in his speech, saying Michigan transfer
Max Bielfeldt has been a “tremendous leader” since joining the program .."

http://www.journalgazette.net/sports/colleges/iu/Crean-talks-togetherness--passion-8165857

'....tremendous leader...'

NCAA MBB Translation: kid cheers loudest from the bench and won't complain to the press when he is just a bench warmer...

Kind of like being named 'Miss Personality' at a Beauty Contest....

Wouldn't be surprised if Max becomes leading rebounder during IU's pregame warm up drills...

I see it the same way. It is not bitterness. I like the kids Bradley got for 4 years, instead of 1 year of Max. I am just surprised by Max's decision.
Max left Michigan because he was a perrenial bench player who felt he never got a chance to play or prove himself. But then he gets a waiver and goes to Indiana. Does anyone think it will be any different there?

At Michigan he got to experience 3 NCAA teams, including an Elite 8 in 2014, and a National Championship runnerup in 2013.

I for one will admit I was wrong...
Max did play a lot at Indiana, was a key player, they were UNDEFEATED at home and had an incredible season that's probably still far from over...
Max was loudly honored at IU by 17,000 fans on Senior Night and says he had an incredible year.
Turns out Max made the right decision and the one that probably served him the best among any and all the options he had. Good for him.

Max Bielfeldt is voted the Big Ten 6th Man of the Year
- Congrats to Max!

Where I and a lot of people were not wrong on Max, is that he is a good player....he would have made a great mid-major player, would have helped us a lot given we constantly had foul trouble, inexperience, and lack of size in the paint..
His Big Ten numbers of 8 ppg & 5 rpg plus 44% from the arc, are pretty impressive given he got just 17 mpg...where here- he might have gotten 30+ mpg.
I honestly think if Max had chosen to finish his career at Bradley - we'd have won 6 or 8 more games - but still wouldn't have played in the post-season - so in the end Max did fine.
