And the noose gets a little tighter. Now Bradley has become a dry campus due to a recent uptick in violations. Just the latest change along with numerous changes over the past 5 years involving restrictions as well as campus sweeps by task forces. WHOI TV is also reporting that restrictions will apply to off campus functions/buildings as well. NO parties at any of the fraternities. No socials with alcohol. They are reporting that this could be a temporary change and will be reviewed again later.

This article doesn't mean its a dry campus. It just means that you can't serve booze at fraternity parties to non-members and obviously you're supposed to be 21 to drink too. Unfortunate things have come to this, because I remember some good times on Fredonia.
 
Heck even in the late '80s, we had BU residence hall keg parties. We won't even mention the Fredonia block parties. We're beyond the statute of limitations here...

A long time coming...the fraternities need to develop suitable risk management strategies for alcohol distribution and consumption. Obvious.
 
And how does this help recruiting?
It's not like we are still in the running for Jabari Parker.

I parked in a tow away zone once. Came back two hours later, the whole area was gone.
 
If the sororities and fraternities would stop doing stupid shit it wouldn't be a problem. There have been several really dumb incidents this year and semester alone.

They have elminated all rules - there's no accountability - no curfews, no restrictions on who comes and goes in dorms & other housing, and literally no or next to no limits on what anyone does in their dorm rooms -
even if some kid speaks up because the drinking and partying going on is interfering with his ability to do his coursework - he becomes the pariah of the entire housing unit.
There are people who will not allow their kids to go to BU and other certain schools because of the lack of supervision, accountability, and rules...

Curfews? I would have eliminated BU from my list right there if that was the case when I went to school.

I'm not sure what the drinking problems are there right now but while I was there it was the usual stupid things that kids would do when they had no idea of how to drink. The problem is that I'm betting kids are being exposed to alcohol from friends who also have no idea. Drinking should be part of a social event not the event. So now it will go underground with all the other elicit drugs and still be abused.

So does the new rules mean no more beers at Carver? :-o

The restrictions are tighter than ever. I have seen zero evidence that tightening of rules reduces drinking, all I have seen is that tightening of rules saves PR face and gets otherwise good kids in trouble. And this is coming from an RA for 3 years. Responsibility is the key. The same things will happen, but now we'll just outlaw those who get caught... It's providing deniability not really addressing the issue. Save a few examples, BU's IFC and Panhel need some serious work, but it should come from holding irresponsible drinking accountable. Several fraternities are perpetual offenders. Rather than punish them all, simply revoke charters for habitual offenders. The fraternities are around at the pleasure of BU, simple as that. Have some real teeth, rather than issuing blanket threats where the victims are those who aren't as good as hiding the drinking, or who don't have as many friends in the upper echelon of BU decision makers.

The interview on TV went a little further than this article with an explanation. Made it clear that they could have no more parties or socials or even have friends over (small party?) if alcohol was present. At least that is how I interpreted the interview. Sounds like this means other students, family members, or friends can't be present if a frat member has alcohol. Even if you are 21 or older. What about graduated members who don't live in the house.

I agree with SPF who said it will go "underground." Now it will be in someones room (who is 21) and guests will go there. Trying to police and enforce this will become more intrusive involving room searches if a task force or police suspect anything. Imagine the questions and kids taking breath tests. "Did you drink here or elsewhere?" "Can you prove you did not drink here?" etc. :roll: Students have already gotten tickets for being on premises even if they blow 0.00 at off campus parties. Bottom line is that you are not going to stop this from happening.
 
Hello neighborhood bar! Also, as it warms up, the kids will head to the the nearest park with a six pack or off campus apartment. It just means as amckillip said that they will be kicking it back somewhere a bit further from their residence which may lead to bigger issues. One thing I'd do instead of creating these draconian rules is if a kid is caught drinking and doing something stupid that the University set up a Friday night and an all day Saturday informative workshop on drinking with no outside contact, ie cell phones or laptops. I bet you'd see them acting more responsible.
 
As a current student and fraternity member, I'm glad I am graduating in May and of age. Underage college kids are going to continue to drink it is just going to be in a less safe atmosphere now. I did not drink before coming to college and when i started drinking as a freshman in a fraternity I had brothers there to show me the ropes and to handle things if someone drank too much. Now you are going to have groups of freshman drinking in their dorms and instead of going out where there is some semblance of order and brothers to watch them, they are going to over consume in their rooms and create more problems for the university.

Btw the new policy they are looking to implement is a BYOB for all fraternity parties. Which means you will be IDed at the door of a frat house and must bring your own 12 pack of beer or 8 malt beverages. you will then have to take your booze behind the bar and be issued a wristband and drink card so you can come back up to get your beers one at a time. Fraternities will no longer be able to supply alcohol at their events. The university is also looking into supplying all 14 fraternities will swipe card systems to make sure no one is using a fake id.

Maybe instead of using this BRADLEY BASKETBALL FAN TALK section as your own personal sniping and trashing ground of BU's President and Administration you have the guts to visit her face-to-face and air your grievances (no, this is not a Festivus moment). I hear President Glasser holds open office hours monthly for the students -- http://www.bradley.edu/offices/president/hours/ . It seems to me this would be a much more effective way to complain. And, for the grown-ups in the room please, with all due respect, butt out... Mind your own business! Or, again, have the guts to put your thoughts in writing and send her a signed letter. I'm quite sure we alumni have no idea of why this is all coming to a head right now. Unless you've actually got a child attending Bradley this is none of your business!

I disagree...most of us went to BU and still are active in Bradley functions, on-campus functions, and in giving and supporting the university...
..so which topics should we post opinions and which not?
I kinda think that's exactly what message boards have been doing for 25 years..if people don't want to read it or hear it - there's a simple and easy solution
 
I'm familiar with one of the incidents -- the timing of which leads me to believe it likely spurred this -- and have reason to believe it was a misunderstanding. Hopefully it's resolved soon, a reasonable policy is put in place, and the "drys" don't insert a Y in BU.

Perhaps, I do not do much with the school right now, but it does not mean I can't express the culture I want to see my alma mater continue with. A dry BU is not the school I went to. BU was a school where you could grow up as an adult in a somewhat safe environment. I'm sure this will be all worked out because what is at stake is the vibe good or bad which will effect recruiting. Sorry most kids want a bit of freedom when they graduate from HS. I understand what the Administration is trying to do but there are other methods to achieve the same results. A police state is never fun.
