More College Basketball Players Behaving Badly

That article mentions Northern Illinois, but both Bradley and Illinois State had been involved in recruiting Leneal Harris. Maybe it's good for them that he spurned them.

Here was a post from last August when I cited an article that mentioned Bradley was recruiting him. Unfortunately, the article is no longer available.

And here is one from the google archives that mentions Illinois State

More bad news for Tennessee and Bruce Pearl. Major Wingate, the starting center and second leading returning scorer from last year's team was suspended for a positive drug test.

Pearl said, "I feel badly for Major, but the truth is that there's a culture that's been allowed to exist here that's got to stop and will stop," Pearl said. "The next step is dismissing players, and we'll do that if we have to. I don't care who it is."
Wingate is the fourth current or former Tennessee player under Pearl to have a drug-related issue.

Hmmm....seems like someone predicted that Wingate would probably never even miss a game, despite getting caught red handed, and testing positive for drug use.

Actually now the facts are coming out and it seems that Bruce Pearl's best returning player has broken a few more rules than was originally reported. Not only did he fail a drug test for marijuana, he also refused to give a speciment for another followup test, which is a very strong violation requiring immediate suspension and discipline. It is obvious that this kid is guilty and trying to hide something.
http://tennessee.scout.com/2/529819.html

Never mind that the athletic code at Tennessee specifically states that if the kid tests positive, especially for the 2nd time, he will be suspended and that a missed or refused test is treated the same as a positive test.
Now comes the article saying the kid probably won't even miss a game.

Too bad the kid didn't take a few extra bucks for his summer job.

How 'bout this Texas footballer who got caught with FIVE POUNDS of high quality grass in his backpack?
This kid scored 15 TD's last year including one in the Rose Bowl.

By some people's estimate, that'd be enough to supply even a "heavy user" for a couple years, so I strongly suspect the guy was dealing. As if that wasn't enough, he also had a loaded gun on his dashboard.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/fbc/3863193.html

The poice were called to a large fight-involving more than 100 people at 1:30AM. Taylor himself was one of the guys who called police about damage to his car, a nice, new Chevy Taho, a car most college kids certainly wouldn't be able to afford.

The kid's alibi...
"gee......I don't know how it got there, it sure isn't mine...."

(PS-- if you are caught with open liquor in the car, it doesn't matter who it belongs to, but I guess with a ton of pot the kid can get off scot free if he can convince a jury it isn't his.
Texas people are waiting to see if there is some way to keep the kid on the football team...)

Not at Bradley Univ.

Not at Bradley Univ.

It's great to know that this would never happen at Bradley. The way those kids conducted themselves on the floor, in the press conferences, and in the classrooms is a testament to our program and certainly speaks volumes about the quality and integrity of The University.

I can assure you that if BU ever pulled some of the crap that these "Big" schools with their "Professional" programs do I (and I'm sure many other alums) would raise hell and refuse to donate moola until things got back on track.

Unfortunately, it is the exact opposite at schools like Texas, USC, Tennesse, et. al. The alums expect, condone, and contribute to cheating at all costs. Without a winner these "quality" institutions and their athletic coffers would dry up.

I'll always take a team that plays with pride, integrity, class, and effort and has an occassional losing year or two over a program that stresses winning at any cost!

I know it seems all too simple but since so many of these scholarship athletes seem to be finding trouble at 1, 2, and 3 in the morning and almost always at booze parties, in bars, or cruising the streets.
But why not make one of the stiplulations and requirements of getting the scholarship (whether basketball, football, or lacrosse), be a rule that the scholarship athlete be off the streets, out of bars, and away from parties after, say 11PM or midnight. Some might say it would be an infringement on the kid's rights, but I say it would save lives and prevent ruined futures for these kids.
Isn't about time we take this stuff seriously?
This is not your father's college frat party-stuff.

Hey-I got one for this column.
One of the brand new Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruits look slike his spot on the roster is toast:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/basketball/ncaa/05/02/bc.bkc.wis.milwaukee.harris.ap/
So is this one of Jeter's recruits or Pearl?
Sounds more like one of Pearl's

This kid who was a UW-M recruit, then scholarship yanked for his behavior (traffic offense, guns, and dope with intent to deal and deliver), Lenal Harris, definitely got a bit more punishment by the state's legal system than the schools or the NCAA seems inclined to hand out.

Harris got a full year in jail, although he may not actually have to serve it all behind bars.

Another "basketball star" from Wisconsin who had been receiving some recruiting interest from UW-M is also in the news

I hope this doesn't swing the wrong way, but I want to pose a question.

There are almost daily news items about college basketball and college football players getting arrested, involved in bar fights, and getting involved in all other sorts of crooked endeavors/payoff schemes/legal run-ins.

Here is my question:
Why does this seem to be a phenomenon associated almost EXCLUSIVELY with college basketball and college football....Marcus Vick, Maurice Clarett, JR Giddens, or anyone recruited by Bob Huggins, etc...?

I did some extensive google searching to see if I could find such stories about college swimmers, college tennis players, college voleyball players, or college baseball players.
Outside of a rare report from 2004 about a college volleyball player from Baylor who was arrested for punching a teammate, and a rare DUI for a baseball player, I came up empty.
Clearly there is way, way more than just a statistical difference.
There really is something that accounts for a huge, huge difference.

Anyone care to offer an opinion?
Is there an actual connection (genetic, environmental, etc.) between criminal activity and basketball/football ability, that just isn't there among swimmers, college baseball players, tennis players, etc?

This is a tough one.
I have heard that 95-98% of all incarcerated, violent criminals are male.
And that between 45 and 64% of all incarcerated, violent criminals are of a racial or ethnic minority.
I hesitate to draw the link, but it has to do with where they grow up, and what sports they play in those areas.

Here is an amazing, briliant, NEW concept in college basketball!

This will possibly take the entire college basketball world by surprise.

It involves this simple rule:

If scholarship players get into BAR FIGHTS, they are kicked off the team and kicked out of the school!
http://www.register-herald.com/sports/local_story_243235458.html

I know this concept is quite foreign to most in the college basketball world, but I wonder if anyone else will give it a try?

More bar fight news, it never seems to end

"Four Niagara University basketball players have been charged with disorderly conduct after one of them threatened a cop and all four ran from police who were investigating a fight outside a Main Street bar."
http://www.tonawanda-news.com/sports/local_story_244105831.html?keyword=secondarystory
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2567979

Also, I see where one of the top returning Mississippi State players is in trouble and suspended. Wonder if that's from a bar fight, too?

The saga of University of Tennessee's leading returning player, Major Wingate appears to be near the end.
After numerous problems many including drugs, the player was remarkably still allowed to remain on the team.
But finally he has now done something described as
"a violation of team rules"
and Bruce Pearl is dismissing him from the team. Apparently he will remain on scholarship, though. ??

Anyone who hasn't checked out that link, you have to wonder why they'd show that picture?
The guy must've been weird.
Here is the pic.
