Trey Zeigler, a talented 6'5 scoring guard, left Central Michigan after his father Ernie was fired as head coach.
He transferred to Pitt and should have had to sit out a year, as nearly all transfers do. But for some unexplained reason, the NCAA has granted him a waiver to play immediately.

What a fortunate coincidence, since Pitt struggled last year, finishing tied for 13th in the Big East. In addition, they lost 2 of their top 3 scorers to graduation, and 2 other players who were slated to return next season just had surgery.

Of course, this would never happen if he had transferred to a midmajor. The NCAA grants waivers to athletes who transfer because of financial hardship, injury or illness to themselves or a family member. There is no such criteria met by Zeigler's transfer. But becaue Pitt needed help right away, the NCAA broke from their usual rules and benevolently granted a waiver so Zeigler could play immediately.

as if to confuse people ever more - the NCAA rules again that a transferring player does NOT have to sit out - but this time - a kid going to UIC..
Joey Miller - transferring from EIU to UIC will have immediate eligibility

after sitting the bench for a little over a year at UIC - Joey Miller quits and looks to transfer somewhere else..
Gotta think he'll look DII because he sure won't get another waiver to play right away, and if not he has just a half year left --
some guy on the UIC board said he was sure Miller would get a redshirt for this year - but I think that's quite unlikely as he has played in seven games

what gets me is that UIC has about half their roster hobbled with injuries and still Miller never played...
