MVC Finals

For a berth in the big dance UNI VS Evansville. I expect UNI to win as they seem to be the tougher minded team and have been here before. If Balentine can get about 30 the Panthers should be doing some dancing. If UNI wins Washpun should be Tourney MVP. It'll be Balentine if Evansville wins. Should be fun.

It's been all UNI as they lead at the half 32-18. Klint Carlson leads the way for the Panthers as he came off the bench and scored 13. Wes Washpun has 9 and didn't allow DJ Balentine to score against him. DJ only got his 5 points when Washpun was on the bench.

I expect to see Evansville come out and play better in the 2nd half, like they did against Bradley. They are too good, and Marty is a good coach to let this game get away from them.

Evansville has as many made FG's in the first 8 minutes then they did in the first half. They are being more aggressive on both ends.

1st lead for Evansville at 48-47 with 3:30 left. Balentine with a layup. UNI shooting too many ill advised 3's has helped the Purple Aces in their comeback.

Evansville has continued to play much better in the 2nd half, and has come all the way back to take their first lead since the opening minutes of the game. With 3:30 left, Evansville now leads 48-47. Balentine has 14, Jaylon Brown has 17 points, and Mockevicius has 19 rebounds! Evansville has played only 6 guys.

Fantastic finish to the game. After Evansville fought back to take the lead, UNI started hitting their shots and the lead see-sawed a couple times. Then with the score tied 54-54, UNI had the final possession. Wes Washpun took a jumper just inside the 3-point line at the top of the key as time expired. The ball hit the back of the rim and bounced about 4 to 5 feet straight up, then fell through the basket for a 56-54 UNI win. UNI heads back to the NCAA Tournament again. Unbelievable!

Great comeback by Evansville and when they went ahead I thought they would go on to win but Wes Washpun refused to let UNI lose. He had one of the better tournaments in recent memory as his defense against Anthony Beane of SIU, Fred Van Fleet of Wichita and DJ Balentine of Evansville was one of the main reasons the Panthers are dancing again. He also was a hard matchup on offense. Balentine couldn't handle him whenever he got switched onto him. Washpun reminds me a little bit of James Harden. I wonder if this will be the year that head coach Ben Jacobsen moves to a power conference. As far as Wichita goes I saw Andy Katz of ESPN say he thinks Wichita is definitely in the dance. He thinks that the committee will take into account the losses earlier this season that the Shockers had when Van Fleet was hurt and that they don't have any bad losses. Of course if upsets keep happening in conference tournaments who knows what will happen.

The All-Tournament Team-
D.J. Balentine, Evansville
Klint Carlson, UNI
Jaylon Brown, Evansville
Jeremy Morgan, UNI
Wes Washpun, UNI (Most Outstanding Player)

Interesting that not a single Wichita State player was recognized, nor anyone else other than UNI and UE players.

interesting - kinda disrespect for the Wichita guys
Fred was named last year even tho Wichita did not play the final game

nearly all of them seem pretty certain they will get in with an at-large bid.

I think they might be in trouble. Just compare their resume to someone like Michigan or Connecticut. Maybe they get in over them, but I wouldn't say Wichita is a lock to get in.
