MVC games Tuesday, Jan. 27 & Wednesday, Jan. 28

UIC cruised easily to a big lead just before halftime
but halftime score-- UIC 41 - InSU 32 - UIC led by 20 with a couple minutes to go in the 1st half then InSU scored the final 11 points of the half
UIC led the whole game by as much as 20 & by 13 with about 5 min to go then InSU roared back and now lead by two in the final minute 72-70

update, wild final minute but a really bad foul call on Vorst (who never touched the guy) allowed UIC to tie then win at the buzzer 76-74

also note, Loyola losing again at home - 51-24 to St. Joe

Yep, UIC had a 13 point lead with about 5 minutes left in the game.
But then Indiana State outscored UIC over the next 5 minutes 18-5 to tie the game 74-74. Indiana State appeared to have one final possession for a chance to win, but they threw away an inbounds pass and UIC scored to win it 76-74.

First off that was an incredible play by Crawford to not only make the steal but to have enough control to gather himself and make the shot. ISU Blue had no more time outs and Scott had no choice but to inbound the ball but it didn't look the Sycamores had a designed play to get it in. There were some interesting stats to come out of this game. UIC got outrebounded by 9 but forced 21 turnovers. ISU Blue had 25 assists on 30 made FG's. There were only 22 fouls called in the game yet UIC was 15-20 from the FT line while ISU Blue was just 4-8. UIC has now won 7 in a row, their longest win streak in eight years, and are tied with BU for 3rd in the Valley. Their next 2 games are at SIU and Murray State then they host Belmont

How was Ind.St. able to play UIC to that close of a game on the road? This whole Valley season makes 0 sense. Like to know what defense Ind. St. played against them because we could possibly learn from that before we play them in Chicago.

you can watch a replay here- https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/8d8a8836-fa81-47b4-abec-0f031c62df7c

but I watched the game last night and just now re-watched a few clips --
and the defense Indiana State played the entire game was a straight up man to man but doubling in the low post.
(Bradley almost never doubles down low and sometimes it costs us- like when we played Belmont & ISU and Scharnowski & Walker ate us up)

BUT-- the InSU defense was extremely ineffective much of the night - as UIC ran out to a 28-13 lead...and then stretched it out
to a 20 point lead (41-21). Their defense couldn't get a stop in the first half.
What allowed Indiana State to catch up wasn't so much any change in the defense that was ineffective in the 1st half, it was that UIC seemed to
get confident with their large lead and started taking lower percentage shots and missing them and making bad passes.
UIC had two 3-minute droughts and a four minute drought down the stretch- allowing InSU to catch up.
The Sycamores should have won. There was a phantom foul call in the final seconds that gave UIC two free throws to tie the game with 7 seconds left.

watching the UNI-SIU game
score is 8-7, 10 minutes in... very poor shooting...
Teams have combined for 7-24 overall and 0-8 from 3-point
As bad as these teams shoot, I am shocked that guys are taking turnaround-fadeaway baseline jumpers & jacking threes
as if they are Michael Jordan...
and SIU hits under 28% from 3-point, yet they keep trying..

update- 3 min left to halftime, the stats are ugly

UNI- 29% overall (6-21), 11% from 3-pt (1-9), 50% on free throws
SIU- 33% overall (7-21), 28% from 3-pt, 20% on free throws (1-5)

Final score- Belmont 78 Valparaiso 77- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/boxscore/_/gameId/401830208

Halftime score- Illinois State 35 Murray State 29

Illinois State's 3rd-leading scorer, Boden Skunberg (10.9 ppg), did not travel to Murray, KY, due to illness-

UNI manages only 50 points, loses 65-50
UNI is now1-6 in their last 7 games and in their last 3 losses, they averaged just 49 points of offense per game

Evansville played well, led most of the game then blew a 19-point lead and loses at Drake 82-78
In a whopping homer FT differential- Drake shoots 38 free throws- Evansville only 12!

Belmont goes to Valpo and almost gets beat, but heroics by Eion Dillon and a little late luck saves them (23pts, 5-7 from 3-pt), 78-77

ISU without Skunberg or Dougherty wins at Murray State 70-65
-- Murray State has now lost three in a row.

Standings
Belmont 9-2
Murray State 8-3
Bradley 7-4
ISU 7-4
UIC 7-4
Drake 6-5
UNI 5-6
Valpo 4-6
SIU 3-7
InSU 2-8
Evansville 1-9
