MVC makes case for multiple NCAA bids

The problem is our prime #2 candidate is a team that has a terrible non-con SoS.

I still think there'll be 2, but I feel the cause may be a UNI loss in St Louis more than anything.

How Wichita plays over the next 10 days will determine who they'll draw for Bracketbusters. If they stay strong, they could get an opportunity to play at VCU or possibly Butler?
A Bracketbuster win OR a strong showing + win @ UNI should give them a good chance to Dance. They need a little help from the non-conf. foes they beat earlier, like Texas Tech, TCU, Cleveland St.

But again, you can't just go by the SOS number. Who they beat may be even more important. They beat then ranked Texas Tech and #20 UNI. Hopefully both of those teams finish strong along with WSU, then they could most certainly get in. But for the moment the two wins over ranked teams supercede their non-con SOS.

Gimme a tiny little break, numbskull writer Jason King...
The Valley is currently WELL ahead of the CUSA in RPI, and has been right even with or actually way better than the A-10 for the past FIVE YEARS!!!!

Hey - Send this writer your opinion of such a really stupid and uninformed comment!!

Heh, I skimmed over that sentence and assumed he listed the Mountain West instead of CUSA.

The A-10 is still better than us this year, though. CUSA can go die in a fire for all I care.

The respect that CUSA gets as a conference is crazy.

I am copying an email meassage that I sent Joe Sheehan in February, 2009 in response to his lightly researched article that made similar unsupported claims about CUSA and the WAC.
************************************************
FEBRUARY, 2009
The Facts
Conference RPI
Through the 2004-05 season, C-USA had teams that are now in the Big East and the MWC was different, so comparing conference RPI??™s can only realistically be done for the period of 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09. The only conference that even comes close to consistently matching the MVC??™s conference RPI results across these four seasons (this year included) is the MWC. Of these five conferences, the MVC was been the highest rated conference in 2005-06 and 2006-07. It was the second rated conference in 2007-08. This year is a down year and it is the 4th rated conference of these five. OK, it is a down year for the MVC, but our track record speaks for itself. By contrast, the WAC was the 21st rated conference last year and this year is ranked 12th. This is the first year since the conference realignment after the 2004-05 season that CUSA has cracked the top 10 conferences based on RPI (which, by the way, the MVC was ranked 8th that year which was higher than the other conferences on Joe??™s major list)

NCAA Bids and Performance
We can??™t include this year because we don??™t know what the bids or the results are yet. We can revisit and update this analysis in April. But, let??™s look at the last 4 seasons. While conference structures were different in 2004-05, let??™s regroup teams based on the conferences they are in now. For example, Utah State made the NCAA that year from the Big West, but we will count them as a WAC team for our purposes. Also, Charlotte was a C-USA team that same season, but let??™s re-categorize them as an A10 team.

NCAA Tournament
Total Bids (different teams)
MVC ??“ 10 (6), A10 ??“ 9 (5), MWC ??“ 8 (6), WAC ??“ 7 (4), CUSA ??“ 5 (2)
Conclusion: MVC has had the most bids and is tied for sending the different teams which is an indicator of cross-conference success, not just the success of on or two programs.

Sweet 16 Teams
MVC ??“ 4, CUSA ??“ 3 (all Memphis), MCC ??“ 2, A10 ??“ 1, WAC ??“ 0
Conclusion: As a conference, the MVC has had the greatest success across multiple teams in the NCAA tournament

Elite 8 Teams
CUSA - 3 (all Memphis)
Conclusion: CUSA has a single program, Memphis, and a big bag of nothing after that

Final 4 Teams
CUSA ??“ 1 (Memphis)
See Elite 8 comments

Conclusion:
The MVC obviously belongs in the Mr. Sheehan??™s group of Major Conferences . The MWC knew what it was doing when it agreed to set up a conference challenge with the MVC rather than CUSA or WAC conferences.

His only possible rationale for mentioning CUSA is that they have regularly had one team who has made a Final Four run each of the last several years, while the Valley hasn't had any team make the Final Four in decades. That is the only reason I can see him writing this. But even this one unique facet of CUSA will not last long as I don't expect Memphis even sniffing the Sweet Sixteen this year, or for possibly quite awhile for that matter.

King may also want to take elementary math lessons as the MVC has had multiple bids three times in the last five years to CUSA's one (if that).

The last two years (this included) the A-10 may have been slightly ahead of us. However, before that we definitely were the "elite" conference between the two of us.

And the Mountain West ought to be fuming for not being included in his assessment, unless King considers them the "seventh" BCS conference.

duh...yea...did you not see the link??
I will quote what he said...
"Self and the Jayhawks should've kept those thoughts to themselves.
Instead of being hailed for a well-played win against a Top 25 opponent,
they came away looking snobbish and petty."

Hey now...watch it! I actually like CUSA, and will be attending their tourney this season. They have some pretty decent teams up top this season...better than any recent season (when Memphis dominated). This season, Memphis will be in an all out dogfight just to get one of the top 4 seeds and a 1st round bye in the conference tourney. UAB and Tulsa will probably be 1-2 in some order, with Marshall, UTEP, Memphis, and Houston all in the mix for spots 3-4. Houston took a bad loss last night which puts them behind the 8-ball, and Memphis took a bit of a hit as well losing a home game to one of the teams battling for that 1st round bye with them. Beyond those 6 teams, CUSA is very weak.

Dang. Those are fighting words. I wonder how Self and the Jayhawks are reacting to this.
