MVC Media Day

BU fan

Tomorrow, Monday 10/30, is Basketball Media Day in St. Louis for the Missouri Valley. The Bradley coaches and Athletic Dept. staff and maybe some players will be headed there as will the other 9 schools. Likely the PJ Star will be there and will report about the day's events.

The coaches and media representatives will each be polled for the projected order of finish. And they will each pick the preseason All Conference teams, and other selections like Preseason Player of the Year, and Freshman and Newcomer of the Year.

I will give my guess for the picks. Anyone else have a guess?

1-SIU
2-WSU
3-CU
4-MSU
5-UE
6-UNI
7-BU
8-IlSU
9-DU
10-InSU

All MVC- Stout (UNI), Funk (CU), Webster (UE), Tatum (SIU), Ahearn (MSU).

POY- Because Nate Funk is coming off a major injury, I will pick Jamal Tatum of SIU

NOY- This is the most difficult. Juco Ty Morrison of Creighton would have been the logical pick, but he has been ill and might redshirt. So I'll go with the hype and pick freshman Osiris Eldridge of ISU.

NOY:Nick Bahe (transfer from Kansas to Creighton becomes eligible this year)
POY:Stout
All MVC-Wilson, Stout, Tatum, Young, and Ahearn (leading scorer in MVC last year)

This is all too difficult for me.

Just a note... doesn't the POY usually come from the team that wins the MVC?

Press, change, rearrange.

Why does everyone have UNI and UE ahead of us. I'm not suggesting they won't finish better than us, but I'm just curious why. Don't they have (if not more) questions than us coming into this season?

All the pundits are using the same concept that Bradley lost more scoring and rebounding than everyone else, while many of the Valley teams have much or all coming back.
UE has all five starters returning.

I fully expect such reasoning, but it did fail to predict BU's deep NCAA run, because they were looking too much at how the Braves did the year before.
Bradley again has a bunch of experienced seniors (Zach, JJ, Will, DA, and even DRuff) so I still think BU will do better than 8th or 9th, but as I said, I really can't argue much with what they are selecting.

By the way....here is how the coaches and media predicted the finish in 2005-2006:

Missouri Valley Preseason Poll from 2005-2006

1. UNI (23) -- 379
2. Creighton (15) -- 372
3. Southern Illinois (1) -- 311
4. Missouri State -- 252
5. Wichita State -- 244
6. Bradley -- 226
7. Drake -- 141
8. Indiana State (1) -- 118
9. Evansville -- 90
10. Illinois State -- 67

They had UNI and CU as clear favorites, with SIU, MSU, WSU and BU far, far behind in the polling.

Turns out that SIU, MSU, WSU, and especially BU all had FAR superior seasons to CU and UNI.
And just who was that numbskull who gave Indiana State a FIRST PLACE VOTE?

ON the Foxsports college basketball blog, they have Jim Les labelled as one of the Valley's
"terrific coaches"
http://community.foxsports.com/blogs/goodmanonfox/2006/10/31/MVC_Notes_Etc

Other notes on the blog...
Ty Morrison has GRAVE'S DISEASE not Gray's Disease
(Gray's Disease is a rare neuro-optic disease)

also, Karon Bradley says Kyle Wilson is a better outside shooter than Marquette's Steve Novak.
....but....here are the facts:
Steve Novak shot 47% from 3-pt range and 48% overall last year, averaging 18ppg and is now in the NBA.
Kyle Wilson shot 43% from 3-pt, and 46% overall, averaging 11ppg, and has a long way to go to get to the NBA.

They call PJ Couisnard the most underrated player in the league, despite that Couisnard is on almost everyone's 1st or 2nd team All Valley lists.
