My 2 cents on the refs

I try not to comment too much about the refs, but I have complained two of the last three BU games. Both were decided in the last ten seconds with BU losing to Drake by one and beating ISU by the same margin. I just want to expand on two points I made after those games since some time as elapsed and my immediate emotion is no longer in play.

I just hate that defensive players are hindered so much especially at the end of games. In particular, the ball handler has free reign to take it to the hole pushing off with his off arm. Not only does the offensive player never get called for this, but in many cases the defensive player draws the foul. If Bradley ever needs one basket to win in the final ten seconds, it??™s a no brainer. Wilson, Crouch, and Warren get in three corners. Ruff throws the ball in to Maniscalco. Sam returns it to Ruff so Sam has a head start on Ruff and can position himself in the fourth corner. Then Ruff goes one on one and scores or is fouled 90 percent of the time. If the opponents double then Ruff kicks it to the open man. I??™m sorry the ball handler should not be able to push off.

My second gripe is the ref who insists on being part of the game. John ???Pretty Boy??? Higgins comes to mind. Five T??™s in the ISU game in the second half is just wrong. Neither Les nor Jank has a history of T??™s and neither should have been called. Jim??™s offense was yelling across the floor. I don??™t care if he had been warned, if he isn??™t cursing and it isn??™t prolonged, you let it go. According to the Journal Star all Yank did was wave his arm. Big deal! Let it go. Salley??™s T was warranted as was the one for hanging on the rim and doing chin ups with no player underneath. The fifth T, I don??™t even know what happened. He certainly didn??™t show up anyone and unless he muttered the magic word, nothing should have been called.

Interesting thing about Higgins. I've watched many games on TV where he's reffing and haven't seen anything to indicated he tries to be part of the game..Maybe because he's not national TV and does things different..I don't know..I know most don't like him here but I thought he was a decent ref for the most part..at least there are others I think are worse
 
I find it silly that everyone is just accepting that all Jank did was "wave his hands"...

He was definitely talking to and saying things to the refs...and never made the slightest effort to deny or argue when he got the "T".
I wasn't sitting in front of him to know what he said, but neither were the Pantagraph reporter nor the PJS reporter....so I don't know how they can be so SURE he didn't say something!
At least I was positioned directly across the floor and could easily and certainly see that his lips were moving and he was saying something.
 
I don't care if he did say something to the ref. It wasn't prolonged and didn't show up the ref. So, unless Yank muttered the magic word, let it go. Neither Yank or Jim showed up the ref and neither should have drawn a T.
 
Jankovich yelled something at the refs about a call and Higgens T"d him immediately , I think Higgens has gotten better over the last 2 years in that he isn"t constantly blowing his whistle; the ref I cannot stand is Pollard and I waited till now to bring up the bad call he made during the Drake game when we had a 5 point lead and Wilson was getting hammered on a double team as the Drake players had him trapped but were fouling him and Pollard comes up with a traveling call ; any official that has conversations with members in the crowd is weak and thinks he is the show and Pollard and Hutchinson are 2 of a kind.
 
Higgins did the MSU/ Northwestern game last night.

He didnt T anyone up. He did though get an absolute earful from Izzo in the first half on a missed foul on a turnover by Neitzel. But for some reason he had restraint and walked away from Izzo. By the way there were over 8K at the game and it was nationally televised.

Not sure what any of that means but it could be that he thinks because he is officating a Valley game he needs to set a tone and manage the game. While in the Big Ten he is officatiing infront of "veteran" coaches who he respects and he also knows he is on national TV so every situation, especially with #11 MSU in the house can and will be scrutinized.

ISU coach Tim Jankovich got his first technical of the season for "waving his hand" at official John Higgins. Jankovich was right in front of me and didn't say a word

A-- I saw that, and as I said, that writer was sitting BEHIND Jankovich who was NOT facing the crowd, he was facing the floor, so how could someone sitting behind know Jank said nothing? He may at most be able to say he heard Jank say nothing, but I have a hard time believing he was in position to know for a fact that NOTHING was said at any time by Jank.

B- I saw Jank from directly across and he WAS facing towards me, and I saw that he WAS speaking to the refs.
anyone who believes Jank never said anything to the refs is pretty naive, it's kinda his job....
I don't deny he "waved his hands" but he also was speaking to the refs.
His lips moved, and out came some words....

Tornado, you'd be surprised what you can hear from press row. If Benson says he never heard anything, I'll believe him since the whole thing happened right in front of him.

Again, I never saw Jank make a comment after the call in question. Maybe one of us just has bad eyesight. 8)

You obviously had a better view of what happened from atleast 55 feet away, while Benson was what 8 feet away at most? I am sure you could see Jank's moving better from atleast 55 feet away, than what Benson could hear or in this case, not hear from 8 feet away.

Jim Benson must be a liar too then.
 
I am wondering if Jank had his back to Benson and if any of the 11K were loud at the time, maybe, possibly, hampering Bensons ability to hear anything? Just wondering.
 
This is getting funnier....since when do the ISU people defend the Pantagraph folks?
You can choose to believe who you want, but I choose to believe the ISU coach did say and do enough to get a technical.
Apparently the BU coach did, also, as did Boo, Dinma, and Matt.

I happen to know Jim Benson. I find him to be very honest and a person of high Integrty.

I get that you have some issues with some of the journalists at the PJ Star, but that shouldn't mean you shouldn't take Jim Benson at his word. Jank has never even come close to getting a T in the games that led up to this game. And now he gets one, and there are a good number of people besides Jim Benson that thought it was unwarranted.

Dinma Odiakosa deserved a technical for hanging on the room and Bradley's Matt Salley was rightly whistled for taunting Richardson after knocking him to the ground, but the other technicals to Bradley coach Jim Les and Richardson were really questionable. The officials were trying to take control of a heated game with a hostile crowd, but they need to remember everyone came to watch the players. The technicals ruined what was otherwise a memorable game.

I believe him because I've sat down there before, in almost the exact spot he was in the other night.

And I also said I never saw Jank make any comment toward the ref, so I'm not basing everything off of what Benson wrote.
 
Maybe the flip of the arm with an open mouth and a sound of "OHHhhhh" or "AWWwww"... with a shocked/ticked look on his face?

There are other ways to communicate without saying a word.
 
I do not know if he said anything but I did see his hand down gesture and turned to my wife and said make-up call. Did not look bad, but nether did JL.
 
I sit directly across from the ISU bench and Jancovich got up and it appeared like his lips moved and questioned a call and was T"D for it and then made a gesture at Higgins like he could not believe he got T"d for what he did; it was so noisy in there that unles you were next to him I doubt you would have heard him ; I am not saying he deserved it but to me it appeared that he did say something and his facial expressions came after the technical.
