NAIA player scores 100 points

I hate it when a team runs the score up like this just to go after a meaningless scoring record. I'm not trying to downplay J.J.Culver's scoring ability but I would have been more impressed to read that he scored 50 points in the first half and did not play in the second half. Poor coaching...

I agree with that sentiment. Makes me wonder if there was some bad blood between the two schools for some reason. You know those Baptists and Adventists don't always see eye to eye! :)

According to the box score and play-by-play, J.J. Culver sat out 45 seconds in the first half (from 6:12 left to 5:27 left), then played the entire 2nd half, despite a lead of over 60 points, until he scored his 100th point with 46 seconds left in the game. He was then removed for the final 46 seconds of the game. Thus he was credited with playing 38 minutes, but he actually only sat out 45 seconds in 1st half + 46 seconds in 2nd half = 91 seconds (total) of the game. It certainly was an effort by his coach to run up the score, and get notoriety for the kid and their team.

Wayland Baptist is a pretty good NAIA basketball school. They are 7-1 and ranked #9 in NAIA Division I.

But Southwestern Adventist University is an even lower-level school. They belong to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), formerly the National Little College Athletic Association, a national intercollegiate athletic association that few people are familiar with, consisting of just 81 schools, mostly the smallest colleges and even a few community colleges and junior colleges.
Plus, they are Division II in the USCAA, which is virtually the smallest and weakest division among colleges. And, on top of all that, they are 0-10 on the season, which is the worst record among USCAA teams.

The kid took 62 of their 77 shots and 27 of their 33 FT's. How did this kid not get tired. He averages 36 points a game so he is their focal point of their offense but this is horrible. I know it's on the other team to try and stop him from scoring but this kid shouldn't have been in the game. He's lucky one of the Southwestern players didn't try to hurt him.
 
All's fair in love and war (and competition). If Southwestern Adventist is going to schedule a game against someone, they have to be prepared for the other teams best effort. That being said, I wouldn't have coached it that way, but I have a hard time being upset with someone for playing within the rules of the game, even if it wouldn't be my style. I mean, seriously, triple team the kid.
