NBA officiating

The NBA season has started, and as always, there are some peculiar officiating calls (or non-calls).
Here is an interesting move by LaMelo Ball of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Is it travelling? Not according to the NBA officiating crew.

For those of us who grew up watching and playing basketball before the last 10 years yes. Now they claim you can take as many steps as you want if you are "gathering" the basketball. So as long as he doesn't grab it with one or both hands he can keep running with it on his hand.

I am familiar with the "gathering" explanation, and why it has lead to so many of these ridiculous travelling instances that are not called. But even with the gathering excuse, I think the LaMelo Ball case above should have been travelling. Once he turns his palm upward and balances the ball in the hand, his dribble ends, but he then takes 4+ steps before planting and shooting. If it can be claimed that he had not yet "gathered" the ball, then a player could literally walk the entire length of the court with the ball balanced in an open palm, and not be guilty of travelling.

Here are a couple more of these ridiculous non-calls-
