NCAA denies Wm & Mary's logo, by OK's nickname Tribe

The NCAA has denied William & Mary's appeal of a ruling that prohibits it from using its logo showing two Indian feathers at NCAA championship events or from hosting NCAA tournament games where the logo would be displayed. The NCAA has ruled their logo is "hostile and abusive". The news came Thursday in a letter from the NCAA Executive Committee, affirming a May decision that the green and gold logo is hostile or offensive to American Indians.

In that same ruling, the NCAA said William and Mary's nickname, the Tribe, was not necessarily abusive, hostile or offensive, and therefore still could be used.

If you weren't sure if the NCAA had lost their mind, this should answer it. UNBELIEVABLE!! Has anyone take them to court yet? Somebody has to if this is going to stop. What does WM have to lose by doing it? All the other schools should chip in on the cost of doing so. This is PC run amok and somebody has to take it on.

But, William and Mary University has knuckled under.
In order to keep their nickname "Tribe", which somehow the NCAA has accepted as not "hostile and offensive", they will have to jettison the feathers in the logo.
With the feathers gone, then I guess the term "Tribe" no longer has a "Native American" context?

Here is what their offical press release says about the NCAA edict:

"Given the well-known challenges that this and other universities face, I am loath to divert further energies and resources to an expensive and perhaps multi-faceted lawsuit over an athletic logo, governing requires the setting of priorities.

...It is galling that a university with such a consistent and compelling record of doing intercollegiate athletics the right way is threatened with punishment by an organization whose house, simply put, is not in order..... we have determined that we are unwilling to sue the NCAA to further press our claims.???‚¬??

I wonder what minutia creates the difference between Chowan College and William & Mary?

Chowan is able to use a feather, whereas William & Mary isn't.

There's a big 'ole scene in there about native americans with the song 'What Makes a Red Man Red'.

I mean seriously. Why are the activists targeting colleges and universities? There may be too many older alumni that don't like change. Maybe they ought to start with the young... then by the time they are are older, they will be more easily swayed.

Eventually, it will be as if the Native Americans never existed, as all signs and emblems of their culture is basically being irradicated by their senseless, money-driven protests. If that's what these activists want, then than's what they'll get.

Please.... let's erase this 'crap' from our history.

I am all for erasing recognition of cultures and skin colors from our society.

I wanted to get this on video for my kids, and as you might guess, all copies of "Song of the South" are contraband, and virtually impossible to come upon.
I did finally find one but it had Japanese subtitles! :roll:

I don't even think it can be listed in the US. A real good friend of mine spent years looking for it. He actually ran into somebody who said there is a British company that sells it, but they do not list it as an available title. I will be seeing that friend today, I'll see if I can't get that companies name for you.
 
I'm obviously too young for this one, when read Song of the South i think of the song by that name by Alabama. whats the disney version?
 
Song of the South
was the name of the feature length film by Disney that told the story of Uncle Remus, Brer Rabbit, etc....
It was a tremendously popular movie but was removed from the store shelves in the United States because it was felt to show slavery in an improper light.
PM me if you want to discuss further, because of the sensitive "politically correct" stuff that goes with this argument.
