NCAA to settle anti-trust lawsuit for $2.8 billion

The NCAA Board of Governors met tonight (Wed. 5/22) and voted to settle an anti-trust lawsuit that they were probably going to lose anyway.

This decision will lead to settlements in a couple other anti-trust lawsuits, and eventually to schools paying players directly.
But a whole new set of problems will likely arise. Which athletes get paid? How much? What about Title IX and the non-revenue sports? How does this affect mid-major and schools not in the Power conferences? And where does the money come from to pay this $2.8 billion?

Here is an interesting article about how this will affect the smaller schools. Much of the $2.8 billion will be paid by non-Power 5 schools, even though they were not part of this lawsuit or the settlement.

I read two of the three articles you posted, DC, the yahoo article and the Indy Star article. Is there no recourse for the non-Power 5 schools to fight this? Can they not file suit in court to fight this decision? If not, I can envision half of these conferences eliminating a lot of sports and dropping down to lower divisions, possibly even to the NAIA. Why should they simply roll over and play dead?
 
As the Greg Doyel IndyStar article suggests, there may be some schools who can't afford to pay their share of this settlement, and will have to drop sports or possibly drop out of Division I.
I also wonder if this could eventually spell the end of the NCAA.
 
What happened to the days when "student athletes" were students first, were in school to earn a degree so they could contribute to society, and participated in sports because they had the skills and talents to do so and there was a spirit of competition, rather than a spirit of excessive greed, among teams and players?
 
Yeah, I foresee a lot of colleges and universities being in trouble if they have to pay players directly.
 
It'll probably come out of the NCAA's tournament TV payouts. For the last 20+ years you've seen a lot of schools jump from D2 to D1 just to share in those payouts, and recently you've seen schools jump to FBS to share in the CFP payouts. With those payouts greatly reduced the Chicago States of the world may be forced to cut sports and drop down to D2.
 
Just finished reading an article with author giving numerous ideas to fixing College Basketball! In the end he says It will go one of two ways. If good, his ideas put in place will help low and Mid-Major schools compete with the Power conference schools and College Basketball and March Madness will stay relevant! He also states that if it goes in the wrong direction, many fans will lose interest due to such a great hold of talent by the big schools that will turn off fans who love the underdog story that will become harder to achieve. Plus if every player is on a 1 year salary, and move every year, overall interest will be lost because fans like to root for and see the development of their schools players each year!
 
I have one other comment to make. From what I read, it appears college Basketball and maybe all college sports is heading into an arena where colleges will be able to paythese students for their Athletic talent! On the surface this would mean the top schools could just outbid all the other schools for the best athletes. However, I thought I read that each school could have a limit of 20 million in their budget to offer these students. It almost sounded like how much in Professional sports is done with a cap so the top spenders each year can't run away with all the best talent. Based on this scenario for the 2025-26 season, could Bradley offer up to 20 million to get as good players as say the power 5 could? If a cap, can Then Bradley compete at least to some degree with the Big Boys? Please let me know your opinion on this sight for any Bradley fans forum members who would like to comment. Thank you.
 
There is no way Bradley could compete with schools that offer $20 million and more. The big football schools bring in revenues exceeding $100 million per year. And though most of that would be used to pay football players, they would still have millions left for basketball.
 
but to some degree of "karma", now we see schools like Kentucky & Pac-12 schools getting their butts handed to them....

UK has cheated and bought players for decades (anyone old enough to remember this?), and now all their highly paid players are greedily going to anyone who offers a bit more...

All the talent out west is headed east because of the football TV money and almost all the Pac-12 schools are greedily scrambling to get into other conferences causing the entire League to implode.

Even Dickie V's Mecca (Duke) lost most of their roster to players looking for a bigger NIL Paycheck...

we can only hope the greed destroys their teams while we actually have kids who want to come here to play for the pure love of the game.
 
Realistically I can't imagine the P4 giving up money and power, so we are likely headed to a football style FBS/FCS split. It is really upsetting but the alternative is schools decimating or getting rid of athletic departments all together.
 
I love the idea that Bradley and other mid or lower majors can find players who will come for the love of the game. I'm just a bit confused. If Bradley doesn't have to spend any of its 20 million on Football and can spend much of this on Basketball, can't we at least buy 1 great player who doesn't mind being the leader for a decent payday! Bradley has its best tradition in Basketball! Therefore, it must use most of that money keeping BU Basketball relevant!!! Sure the big boys will have more millions to spend above the 20 million Cap. However, 20 million is still enough Money for Bradley to go out and recruit not only a great player but also one who cares about learning, being a great role model, NOT being Greedy!!!! There are special talents out there who have a different attitude on life and its up to our recruiters and coaches to find at least 1 with this DNA makeup!!!!!

All we can do as fans of college basketball and of Bradley is to enjoy it while we can. College sports is changing and soon will be unrecognizable.
 
I'm excited for this upcoming season as it appears BU will be the MVC favorite! I would love to see them compete In the Big Dance! As an Underdog no doubt! The following year will be so so interesting! We will lose MVC first teamer Duke, MVC most improved Hannah, and Zeke! It appears will have a total Rebuild! Now the question is what will Bradley do with 20 Million to lure at least 1 great player or more? Obviously the big boys will have no limit and a few could field a total roster of NBA future players who could stay if they can make as much or more then the NBA. If this occurs, March Madness upsets will be few and far between and the tournament may lose its luster! Time will tell if Bradley has any chance to be a final 4 team the likes of FAU, SDST recently. If the Underdogs are all knocked out first round, how many viewers will keep watching?

What makes you think Bradley is going to have $20mil in their budget to spend on players? I love BU and our basketball program but I don't see it happening that way.
