NCAA Tournament

UNI is 25th nationally in defensive efficiency, St. John's is 10th.
Barttorvik has St. John's as the 15th best team in the country - a bit under seeded. Panthers will have their hands full.

Nice to see Miami-Ohio get an at-large bid, but it is a #12 seed and they have to play in the Play-In round in Dayton. They play SMU, who IMO doesn't belong in the tournament at all. SMU is 20-13, just 8-10 in the ACC, and they are tied for 11th place in the ACC.
Texas (18-14, 9-9 and 10th place in the SEC) doesn't belong either.

The SEC gets 10 bids, the Big Ten gets 9, the ACC and Big 12 get 8 each.
4 conferences (out of 31) get more than half the bids.

One other team that appeared to get a huge "gift" from the selection committee is Missouri. Missouri finished in a 3-way tie for 8th place with Georgia and Kentucky. Missouri's NET was 58, far below Georgia's 33 and Kentucky's 28. Even the SEC's 10th place Texas had a much better NET of 42, and the 2 SEC teams tied for 11th place Auburn and Oklahoma, who did not get bids, have better NET's of 38 and 48.
But Missouri not only got an at-large bid over many teams with better NET ranks, they got a #10 seed, and they get to play their first round game in St. Louis, where they will undoubtedly have a big home crowd and a semi-home court advantage against Miami

Miami playing in Dayton will be almost a home game for them. Dayton isn't too far from Oxford. I'm glad they got in; first time in 27 years the MAC has two bids.

As expected, 33 at-large bids went to the 5 Power Conferences, and only 4 at-large bids went to the other 27 non-power conferences combined.
The at-large bids to non-power conferences- 2 to the West Coast Conference, and one each to the MAC and A-10.

My 1st round sleepers (to possibly get an upset, but at least to make it close!)
#14 Kennesaw St (+20) vs #3 Zags
#12 Akron (+7.5) vs #5 Tex Tech
#12 UNI (+11.5) vs #5 St John's
#11 South Florida (+6) vs #6 L'ville

Possible upset - St John's is overrated - thought they'd be a 7-seed. UNI playing more like a 9-seed lately and with tons of mojo. Should be an easy cover at least.
SJU won the BE regular season and tourney. They are playing well. I know the BE was weak this year, but still going to be tough for UNI to pull the upset. I was surprised they were a 5 seed. Thought they might land at a 4.
