New BU baseball coach

Just the 5th BU baseball coach since 1921!!

"Dominguez becomes just the fifth skipper for the Braves since 1921, following in the footsteps of Bradley legends A.J. Robertson (1921-48 ), Leo Schrall (1949-72), Chuck Buescher (1973-79) and (Dewey) Kalmer (1980-2008 )."

He's 45. That's not young but it's not really that old either.

True. But I was really hoping for a head coach who is I guess from a more established winning program who is young and hungry to make BU a good as possible and even if that ment he looked at BU as a stepping stone. Someone from a program like Rice, WSU, Miami, etc.

This hire just does not strike me as a hire of someone who has success written all over it. 178-199-2 overall as head coach at EKU and even the fact that his first team was only 15-40, the last 6 years isnt exactly sparkling at 163-159-2.

He just seems like a safe solid hire, especailly academically, but not someone who will move BU to the next level even within the MVC. BU stayed conservative in this hire.

Is Bradley a better baseball job than EKU? That would be a dumb question if we were talking hoops, but why would a D-I head coach leave for this baseball job?

I'm supportive of the decision but it did take me as a bit of a surprise. As mentionned, his most recent record doesn't blow me away. But he's a guy who is familiar with the Valley having played and coached at Creighton. And there are a lot of common kids that BU and Creighton go after. Hopefully kids don't ask him, "Well you choose to go to Creighton, now sell me on why I should go to BU instead of CU."

I'm sure that the fact that his last employer was the place that our University President came from didn't hurt.

I wish him the best in making BU a force to be reckoned with on the diamond. There is no reason why 35-40 win seasons shouldn't be the norm rather than the exception. (Unless the NCAA wants to further damage college baseball and have DIV 1 teams only play 35-40 games a season, but that's a discussion for another time.)

"Dominguez, 45, was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba"

When I was at BU, there were several students from the Dominican Republic and several others that were first generation Cuban American (I was majoring in Int'l Studies). I'd love to see the new coach pull in players from the islands using the int'l business program as a draw.

Eastern Kentucky was President Glasser's place of employment before coming to BU.

In a way, I wonder how much influence President Glasser had with this hire. Honestly, I dont know anything about this guy so I will take a wait and see approach and wish him and the team well.

I don't know the answer, but I would think KK had a lot to do with the hire. That's one of his main jobs.

Thanks Scouter.... I enjoyed Wessler's column and agree with the tone. I have absolutely no problem with his hire; he sounds like a quality guy.

Life is all about "who you know", but ultimately comes down to "whether you get the job done". I'm sure all the parties involved knew the risk involving perception, which leads me to believe that this is the man for the job. I expect Coach Dominguez to have a long and distinguished career at BU just as every BU coach before him :)

I'm watching this too!! This is some good publicity!!! He got to throw out the opening pitch too, and I guess Elvis played under Jim Hendry awhile back. They're talking a lot about Kalmer, the Bradley program, and Peoria.

Good stuff, seems like a nice guy ... too bad he was on though when he didn't have much background on the school or the program. Almost seemed like he didn't know what he was getting into!

Interesting hire, not a young coach, does have Valley connections but still not someone I would have said is a hire that would bring BU into a more young minded type of coach.

Time will tell I suppose on if this is a good hire.

That is about the age today when assistant coaches are moving up to head coaches jobs unless, as in this case, they have the right connections. He alreadey has head coaching experience which is a plus for BU and the question about is this being a better job then EKU could be answered w/ $$$$$.$$ signs. I am sure that this opening is a pay raise for the new coach. The bigger the conf. in baseball (and the MVC still has a reputation because of WSU) the higher the pay.
To have hired a young assistant coach from one of these big programs might have had to include a substantial raise for the new head coach. Just like when we were looking for a BB coach some of these assistant @ these powerhouse teams are probably making as much a year (or at least close) as a head coach would @ an EKU or even possibly a BU. (have not heard his annual salary)
The one thing I hopt that Pres. Glasser does is make a committment to baseball at BU also as the new sports building had no where for baseball. BU can not compete w/o this kind of a committment. The power schools have fantastic training facilities for year around training including indoor pitching and hitting areas. Maybe someone knows if they have the use of O'Brien field's workout area year around as this would be quite helpful in the future.
Anyway GOOD LUCK TO THE NEW COACH
