New Mexico Player convicted, then rejoins team

Aaron Johnson, the Big Ten leader in rebounding last year at Penn State, transferred to New Mexico after getting into trouble at Penn State and getting kicked off the team for fighting with teammates.

This summer, before he even starts to practice during his required redshirt year for transferring, he got into a 2AM brawl at a bar and punched out several policemen as well. He was suspended from the team by coach Ritchie McKay, but is still working out with the team and awaiting reinstatement to the team.

Yesterday in his first court appearance since being arrested on the charges of battery on a police officer, he plead guilty to resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer and was sentenced to 364 days of unsupervised probation.
The much more serious battery charges were not pursued in exchange for the guilty plea.

Johnson will now likely will rejoin the team. New Mexico is in dire need of a rebounder.

The New Mexico coach Mckay had said that the reason JR
Giddens was still on the team and working out with the team
was because even though he had serious charges pending
against him for his part in a bar fight, that at least since
arriving in New Mexico he had stayed clean.
But this argument fails to hold water, since Johnson
immediately fails to stay clean and gets in big trouble for
fighting with police officiers. So how does Coach McKay
rationalize that Johnson broke the very rule he had cited for
staying clean in New Mexico?
Very self serving if you ask me, and it seems he values the
potential on court help he might get from these two guys more than he does discipline.

Intersting, that when Giddens left Kansas, there wasn't too much lamenting by the Kansas fans.

But now, with Bill Self's Jayhawks mired in mediocrity, the local Kansas press is dragging up stories of how good they'd have been if they had all those NBA-caliber talents who left since Bill Self took over (Giddens, David Padgett, Alex Galindo...) had instead stayed in Kansas.
If you are a BU fan, this story has to sound familiar.

Meanwhile, Giddens is trying to stay out of trouble this season so he can play next year at Nerw Mexico.
Seems like New Mexico is having a little trouble winning with the players they actually recruit. Now that Danny Granger (who was a transfer, not a recruit) is gone, they can't seem to beat anyone on the road or anyone with an RPI better than 150(they only have a couple on their schedule).

So, it's time to start scouring the nation for disgruntled recruits.
Here is a discussion on their message board suggesting going after a few D-I players who are unhappy elsewhere.
Will they ever learn?

After a couple absolute blowout losses (one a 47-year worst loss to New Mexico State) suddenly the press at New Mexico is calling for a change. Maybe even calling for the coach to refund some of his salary!
They want to stop trying to build their program with "disgruntled transfers" like Danny Granger and JR Giddens.

"McKay leans too heavily on finding disgruntled transfers like Danny Granger, Giddens and Johnson. This is not building a program. This is desperation."

New Mexico State is playing without their leading scorer from last year, Tyrone Nelson, who has been suspended indefinitely from the team.

New Mexico seems to be really bad on the road but good at home.

They always have been - IMO, and I lived in ABQ for about 2 years.

That's why they normally would load up cream-puffs, get their 20+ wins, beat a ranked Utah or Arizona at home and get a bid to the NCAA.

Seems like that formula for a guarantee NCAA bid is something of the past.

I wonder if anyone has ever been to the UNM campus and surrounding area?

I have.

UNM is in a pretty rough part of town.

I didn't like being around there after the sun went down - and if I went in any joint that served alcohol, I would find a place against the wall (hopefully in a corner) so I could put my back against it and keep an eye on everyone and everything.

I have never been to the Q city, but I have heard it can be a tough place. It always ranks high in per capita crimes and murders.
