News at GateHouse Media/PJ Star

The Gatehouse "director" is none other than Wesley Edens, one of Forbes 500 richest people in the world, and a pretty shrewd character, indeed.
He also co-founded and owns Fortress Investments, one of the largest stock and security traders in the world. If he's trading the very stock of the company he directs, that alone raises concerns, not too unlike the refs who bet on their own games.
He sits on the board of Gatehouse, and under his direction the company's stock drops sharply, and suddenly he buys 1/3 of a million shares at significantly discounted price from a few weeks ago.
Nobody has claimed yet that he did anything illegal, but I can assure that people in the know are commenting on the scope of the purchase and the timing.
You tell me, a very influential and wealthy guy who makes a billion dollar living trading stocks, suddenly deals in 300,000 shares of a company he directs to a sharp stock price drop.
Maybe you have no problems with it, but it is being reported as a news story for a reason, as this kind of thing just doesn't happen every day without raising eyebrows.
If it isn't improper, it is at least shady.

But it's not the only time recently Edens' company has looked shady.
Of other interest, presidential candidate John Edwards who has publicly (like most liberals) vehemently attacked those who foreclosed on Katrina victims or who cashed in on their losses, just happens to be a major investor (to the tune of $16 million) in Edens' company, Fortress, who made a killing from (as Edwards himself stated)
"profiting from their losses".
Sounds a little like he's talking about himself, there.

No, it doesn't as almost all directors own stock in the companies on whose board they sit. For example, all Caterpillar board members own stock in Cat. Some companies even require directors to own stock. The news item is just that. All holding a 5% state in a company, officers, directors, and their immediate family members must file with the SEC on any position changes. These are then reported in the news.

I am only commenting on this lone segment of your argument. He may very well be all you say, I don't know.

Hmmm...looks like we need to open a new board forum on financial advice and investments!
;-)

Or better yet, I can convince Da Coach to take BradleyFans.com public and offer shares at some incredibly unreasonable price and just maybe someone will buy?

Joe, that's not even close to what you imply. The guy is just following SEC rules per open market transactions. Actually it can be seen as a positive as an insider must think that the company's stock price is going to appreciate if he is buying in the open market.

Me thinks this person wants Gatehouse to fail... track his comments here since Gatehouse bought out area papers...

Not to fail, but be accountable.
Ever since Peoria went to a one paper town, there has been less accountability.
But when the local shareholders sold out to the west coast copley people in 1996
then there has been even less accountability. I guess all those years of the beat writers taking unfair slams at Bradley and its head coaches, calling them names, slandering them with no facts or source for what they say, and in the case of one writer levelling a series of attacks and slams at Bradley when they were legally and properly buying up real estate, it has left me with the idea that they believe they are bigger than life, more important than the rest of us. It is the primary job of the paper to report news, but now it has become their primary job to go with their agenda and try to force the results they want.
Humorous though that when the facts were revealed, almost everything reported about the BU real estate purchases was incorrect, overblown, biased, and unfair. Pretty much just what would be expected when there is no accountability.

I wonder if they have plans to turn the pjstar.com into a subscriber service. Tough business with so much online access these days.

Do you think the number of home delivery subscribers have dropped since they can get the same information free online without all of the advertising mess that clutters up the paper version?

First...a lot of the stuff that's in the paper is not online.
Many of the articles, all the pictures, the ads, the cartoons, pretty much most of what I read the paper for is not online, so I rarely ever even go to the pjstar.com website, as I find it pretty lousy as far as newspaper websites go.

Second, recall that the main writer of all the slams against BU during the property acquisition and land buying, was a writer who just coincidentally never revealed that his own parents owned one of those properties (and stood to benefit substantially), until after the sale went down.
Then he had the gall to attack BU for not being honest and upfront about it, when all along and for MONTHS in advance, the entire plans including the purchasing of the land were on display in the hallway in front of Jim Les' office, and had been presented several times publlicly had that writer even bothered to check.
Anyway...if a private interest such as BU is in negotiation to buy land, why are they compelled to tell their plans to the newspaper and destroy their chances to get the deals they would like to get?
If I choose to buy property I don't publish my intentions and the amount I am willing to pay in the paper, it would be asinine.
I share the opinion that the PJS has appeared to have an anti-BU agenda for years.
They have unfairly attacked Dick Versace, Albeck, Molinari, and now Jim Les.
They have ridiculed JL because of his background as a stock broker and who can forget the infamous line by PT that Jim Les has "surrounded himself with people who would rather take the expedient route than the principled route"?...suggesting JL had filled his staff with a bunch of crooks....then he never apologized or explainged that statement.
Of course...newspaper people are above the common decency that says you are actually accountable for your statements. They lay claim to literary license and get away with murder. Some of the recent comments by editors such as comparing Eric Gordon to a "steaming pile of...", and calling the readers hypocrites are examples.

More interesting stuff at the PJ Star's sister newspaper, the Springfield Journal Register.
Editor resigns, Publisher and Managing editor all asked to resign, staff to be cut in half.
150 employees (nearly half their work force) offered severence in effort to make paper profitable.
Rumors that Gatehouse will look at the PJS in the same light, and the "axe is about to fall".

There was a small note of this in the Journal Star but not on their web site.
Forcing out all the top people and cutting half the employees loose does not seem to be a very friendly way for GateHouse to deal with the oldest newspaper in Illinois (founded 1831) in the first few months they own it.

Where did you get that information from?
How will it affect those boards?

They won't fire the Publisher and Managing editor and leave a lowly message board moderator......:D

How will it affect the boards?

For one look for the private message feature to be turned back on.....

So people will know. The PJS board disabled the private message feature to keep people from finding out about the BradleyFans board. They would also delete any post that had a mention or a link to this board.
Bad idea that didn't work

I will also add that I am proudly banned from said board for expressing my displeasure of these communistic tactics.

And even the good folks here at Bradley fans won't let me tell the whole story, proven by how they just edited MY post for me.....

If anybody wants to know the real story and EXACTLY why the private message feature was turned off by their moderator PM me and I'll reply when I get time.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.....

My take on it.....
I am presently banned on the PJS board under my identity of "tornado" and when I asked why, I was told my posts were objectionable, and the explanation was that I had posted that I knew more than I was willing to post publicly on a subject (which was about a certain recruit who was at a BU game) and that I'd be happy to discuss further but not openly.
It has been noted that a school's booster talking openly about recruits from a personal standpoint could be misinterpreted as impermissable contact (remember the issue with Iman Shumpert at North Carolina when he talked with a couple of the school's NBA players??)
...and so to avoid even the appearance of anything improper, I said I would not say anything further openly.

Well that got me banned and I have never since posted as "tornado".

But I was told the reason for the discontinuation of the private messaging was because people would use the PM feature to start arguments, rip into other posters, or start up unfounded rumors, etc.....in other words....some of the things said privately were NOT to the liking of one of the moderators, since occasionally certain people would show him their PM's and accuse others of bad mouthing.
This stuff may possibly be true but doesn't this stuff happen every day in real life and it doesn't cause us to put duct tape over everyone's mouth?

Here is another thing that is really annoying to me, and I hope the visitors to the BradleyFans site appreciate this---

I cleared out all the cookies from my files and went to the PJ Star Sports page and to the PJ Star Forums. That's all, just one visit to the PJ Star sports and forums sites. Then I checked my cookies files and here is what I found--

12 different cookies planted on my hard disk from just 1 visit to the PJ Star site! And they must have all come from their site, as I verified that all cookies had been cleared prior to visiting their site, and then checked immediately after the visit.

Then I cleared the cookies again and went just to the BradleyFans site. No matter how many pages you view at BradleyFans.com, the only cookie you will ever get is this one--
[email protected]leyfans

That's because we do not have advertising, popups, or banners, and we do not place adware or spyware cookies on your computer. Never have and never will.

Can anyone with more computer and web knowledge explain why the PJ Star site needs to download so many tracking and advertising cookies to every user's computer? If you are wary about getting these adware, and spyware cookies, then be warned that you are getting them at their site.

Because they make money doing it, sell the web info and tracking, and use it to direct market in the future.
Many, many web site also plant cookies (as I am sure you already know) and even worse programming, and they generally do it for profit reasons.
I agree there is no profit motives here, nor any motive of any kind except to help boost support for BU.
