NIL - Name, Image, Likeness

Schools themselves were not supposed to be involved in NIL money, and coaches and school officials were not supposed to be using NIL money as a recruiting tool. But after a miserable start to the season, University of Minnesota head football coach is pleading with Minnesota fans to pony up more NIL money so he can keep his best players and recruit better players.

This is a team from the 2nd best NCAA football conference, and with a university athletic department budget of $120 million each year, bitching about not being able to compete unless fans open their wallets, grab all their money, and send it to them "ASAP" so they can afford to buy better players. Wow.
This is exactly what the NCAA has said NIL was not intended to be about.
And one other thought... maybe they should get the NIL people to change that name "Dinkytown Athletes". :roll:

The NCAA is reportedly about to undertake an unprecedented action to sanction a school for NIL violations. With the proliferation of NIL money being thrown at athletes in the last 2½ years, the NCAA only had a couple rules- the awarding of NIL money had to come from outside sources and not the schools themselves and the awarding of NIL money could not be used by the schools as a recruiting tool.

However, everyone knows that NIL money is being used widely as a recruiting incentive. But for the last 2½ years of the NIL experiment, the NCAA has completely ignored this.

Ironic that they are going after Florida State, and not any of the other top football programs, who are almost certainly guilty of the same infractions, if not more. Florida State was the football program excluded by the College Football Playoff committee, despite being undefeated in their regular season, and then they criticized the process. Coincidence? Probably not.

If they're going to penalize FSU then they had better take a look at Texas A&M. I can't imagine how many violations they'd find occurred while Jimbo was there.

This feels like the jack booted thugs kicking FSU while they are down to make sure they stay down and tow the line. No more anti-NCAA football playoff comments and no "out of the box" ideas for them.

for their liking and were winning just a few too many games.
Reminiscent of how Bradley came from nowhere in 1985 to go 32-3 in 1985-86.. only to prompt a massive IMMEDIATE
investigation from NCAA and a whole bunch of sanctions for literally nothing except telling the NCAA field agent to f/o.
Recall the phrase that explained the infraction & reason for sanctions- *"head coach failed to comport himself in the proper manner"*.

Ultimately we will probably get to a system where the schools just pay the players directly. All of this is ruining college sports.

Rick Pitino says NCAA enforcement arm 'of no value anymore'
With legal disputes escalating over the use of name, image and likeness compensation in the recruitment of college athletes, Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Pitino believes it's time for the NCAA to stand down when it comes to policing member schools.

"It's a very difficult time in college basketball, because it's free agency," the first-year St. John's coach said Saturday. "And now I think what's going to happen is, they're going to say everybody can transfer, and then if they don't like it, they're going to take 'em to court.

"So I think the NCAA enforcement staff just should be disbanded. It's a joke. Not because I dislike them. But they're of no value anymore. Because just, Tennessee now will take 'em to court, Virginia will take 'em to court."

The attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia filed an antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA on Wednesday that challenged its ban on the use of NIL compensation in recruiting and in response to the association's investigation of the University of Tennessee.

After leaving Iona in March 2023 to take the St. John's job, Pitino brought in 12 new players for this season, including 10 transfers. But he said the current college landscape involving NIL and the transfer portal makes it "very tough" to build a consistent culture at a high-level program.

"I think so many football coaches are getting out, so many basketball coaches are getting out, because of this culture," Pitino said. "It's tough to build a program. You've got to really innovate, get creative and understand these rules right now -- or lack of rules."

This is true, there really are no rules as far as transfers . These schools are definitely breaking NIL rules because players are not suppose to get money or promised it before they start attending their school. Funny that when the big schools start losing players because they were illegally recruited to transfer all sh-t hits the fan. This whole thing is a mess. This is what happens when government gets involved.

I hate seeing this.We need to get controls on this otherwise it is going to get way out of hand and create chaos
 
I heard a lot of bragging about how good our NIL is and now it is time to show by securing Deen, Hannah and Hickman for another season. The other thing is having enough money to spend on transfers coming into BU so we get more good players. This will be so important in moving the program forward in the next few years.

The NCAA sent out this memo today to member schools that they will abide by the injunction and pause all investigations of 3rd party NIL groups - https://www.on3.com/nil/news/ncaa-issues-updated-nil-guidance-after-preliminary-injunction-decision/

They used the word "pause" to make it clear that they could resume enforcing their rules regarding the 3rd party NIL groups when this court case involving their investigation into the Tennessee NIL collective is resolved. The NCAA also made it clear that their rules prohibiting pay-for-play, institutional payments and quid-pro-quo requirements are still in place.
 
Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team voted 13-2 to form a union. It’s getting more interesting. I think collective bargaining will eventually be in place for college basketball and football
