NIT announces new team selection protocol and new committee members

INDIANAPOLIS — The National Invitation Tournament Board of Managers has announced new qualification procedures for the 2025 NIT, which include bids going to 16 “exempt” teams, as well as others that may qualify automatically as regular-season conference champions.

Exempt teams will include the top two teams not selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship from both the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference. In addition, the top team not selected to the NCAA championship from the top 12 conferences (based on the Ken Pomeroy Rating) will receive an exempt bid to the NIT. The top teams from each conference will be determined based on the average of the teams’ ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI), Kevin Pauga Index (KPI), NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET), Ken Pomeroy Rating (KenPom), Strength of Record (SOR), Torvik ranking and Wins Above Bubble (WAB) ranking. All rankings are already included in the “Team Sheets” used by the NIT Committee during the selection process.

All teams receiving an exempt bid are guaranteed the opportunity to host a first-round game.

In addition to the exempt teams, regular-season conference champions that are not otherwise selected to the NCAA championship can earn an automatic bid to the NIT as long as that regular-season champion has an average of 125 or better across the BPI, KPI, NET, KenPom, SOR, Torvik and WAB rankings. The rest of the 32-team field will be selected as at-large teams by the NIT Committee.

This favors the ACC and SEC. They will automatially accept the top 2 teams from those 2 conferences that aren't given bids to the NCAA. In other words, likely the 9th,10th or 11th teams from those two favored conferences will get automatic bids and have a chnce to host home games. :roll:

The top team from the Top 12 conferences (by Kenpom criteria), that did not get an NCAA bid, which most likely will include the MVC will get a bid.
The regular season champions who didn't get into the NCAA Tournament no longer are guaranteed a bid to the NIT, but they can get a bid if they have a year-end rating of 125 or better by the various ratings systems they use. That seems likely to still favor Power conference also-rans, who despite finishing low in their conferences, will still retain high RPI/BPI. Kenpom, etc rankings just from playing the bulk of their games against other Power Conference teams, somthing mid-maors never do.
So it looks like the MVC should still get one bid, and it is possible they could get more using these new selection criteria, but it will be difficult. And low-maor conference will probably get shut out completely.

Why were the B1G and the Big 12 not included? Why just the ACC and the SEC? These four conferences could have had the NIT all to themselves.

No worries, guys! They'll continue to make changes to these tournament invite rules until all mid-majors have been eliminated!
