Official BU 'poaching' thread?

Since it appears Bruce is once again poaching his former conference for talent, can we start a thread listing out schools that have fired their coach, and have players we may be interested in poaching from them by taking advantage of these rules? I'll get it started -

Providence
Texas Tech
Towson
Northern Illinois

Are there any graduating seniors who have a year of eligibility left on any of these teams that we would want?

We may want to also identify what graduate programs we offer that these schools don't. Maybe we can play this game too!

If Bruce made any contact before a player got his release, it would be a violation. So I doubt there has been any contact yet. I am hearing that Sam is considering multiple schools, as well as the option of staying at Bradley. So pegging him to go to Illinois might be premature, then again, he could end up there.

That's what I was wondering. How does SM know Illinois would even take him unless he has talked to them?

Seems like it has to be tampering.

That's why I was sure to say 'appears' that Bruce is poaching - A lot of unknowns still out there, so we're all more or less speculating. It's not baseless speculation, but still just speculating. Since other schools are fair game, we might as well speculate about them too.

It usually happens through contacts made by an AAU coach or former HS coach. That would not be illegal, unless that person was acting as an "agent" for the athlete.

Maybe he wants to go to school there. He wouldn't have to "know" the basketball team will take him to express his desire for the education and to play basketball there if the opportunity presented itself.

Focus here...there are a number of threads talking about Sammy and the Illini. Let's try to keep this one focused on other players that may consider transferring at schools where the coach was fired.

Perhaps a little OT for this thread, but poaching players from the teams mentioned would IMO involve a coach with some type of name or major connections. Can I at least hope we can get a coach in which poaching for us will be easy:doubt:

Yes! I feel the same way. While I wouldn't want to really build a program like this, to discount it as an option would be foolish.

Didn't work too well for Iowa State this year. Will have to see how they do next year. They have 3 or 4 transfers that become eligible next season, this year they picked up Jake Anderson from NIU, who was easily their second best player next to Silas, for his 5th season.

This is my first BU coaching transition. Based on the past how much info should we expect to be leaked as far as who is applying, interviewing, considering, etc.

I should add that in addition to poaching, we need a guy who can instantly give us credibility to retain one recruit in particular! A couple of people mentioned in the PJS list have that ability. imo

ok back to poaching thread!:)

Good question. The internet was around for the last one, but this is the first one where there's been social media where news can go viral instantly. I'm not sure anyone knows what will get out, but I am sure BU is going to play this as close to the vest as is necessary.

I don't think we'll poach without a coach

Thought this was an interesting post on the Illini forum regarding Sam. Obviously this guy is paraphrasing a sports writer that was on the radio, so who knows how true it is, but still using "back channels" to contact Sam seems kind of fishy. Here is the post:

"Klee on Sam M (paraphrasing radio interview):

Tough as nails, wonderful kid. Loved him him in high school, and like him even more after three years at Bradley. He still has to be granted a release from Bradley, but this likely to happen very soon. No one can talk to him until this happens.

Illinois will be at the top of the list, but everyone interested (several Big 10 schools) will have to recruit him, sell him on someplace where (a) he is going to play in the NCAA tournament; and (b) will be a starting. But in the end, Illinois best fits those criteria and will be the favorite. He would play PG at Illinois. Illinois has put down what groundwork they can via back channels to help make this happen. It would be a win-win for both sides."
