One MVC game Monday, Dec. 22

I'm really curious to see if Northern Iowa can hang in this one. Both teams are really good defensively. Can UNI score enough points? I have my doubts, but I've been proven wrong before.

Do not think it's a very good matchup for them, think they will struggle with their size and don't think their guards are quick enough to exploit it. Hope I'm wrong

I was going to say the same thing I see Afreck said... UNI's biggest vulnerability is their lack of size. St Mary's has a starting center who is 7'2" and averages 9.6 ppg and 10.3 rpg, and another center who started their last game who is 7'1". Their top scorer is a big 6'8" Lithuanian power forward who transferred from Arizona. He averages 18.5 ppg and 7.3 rpg. And, their starting guards average 15.0 ppg and 13.6 ppg. They have played a tough non-conference schedule and won most of their games in blowouts. St. Mary's is an 11.5 point favorite.

Of course, one of the slowest paced teams in the country has 12 points in 6 1/2 minutes ... If UNI can score 85, sure they can win.

St. Mary's scored the final 6 points of the first half to take a 28-27 lead over UNI at halftime-
Neither team is shooting well. UNI shooting 37% and 23% from three. St. Mary's shooting 33%, and 23% from three.

UNI down one at the half at St. Mary's - the Gaels played really poorly and I fear it's only a matter of time until they start pouring it on against the Panthers. UNI is good defensively but the size of St. Mary's feels like it's going to be too much. They don't have anyone who can stop the giants inside.

Ismaef Diouf had a great game for UNI but makes a really poor decision on a tightly guarded backdoor pass to Trey Campbell to try and get the lead with 15 seconds left but it goes out of bounds.

Out of the inbounds, UNI nearly got a tie up but got called for a foul. Jacobson went bananas complaining but it was hardly conclusive either way.

Anyway, Campbell gets a decent look at a 3 to tie it but misses. Refs miss that the rebound was off St. Mary's and the Gaels ice it.

Really impressive performance by UNI, even though they found a way to lose even after not letting St. Mary's make a shot in the last SEVEN minutes of the game.

Final score St. Mary's 63 UNI 58- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/boxscore/_/gameId/401820549

Fouls were 24-11 in favor of St. Mary's, and St. Mary's outrebounded UNI 41-25.
The Gaels were 25-27 on free throws while UNI was just 3-4. Most of the foul calls were justified. St. Mary's shot poorly (32% overall, 20% from three), but instead of allowing them to clank their shots, UNI kept fouling and sending them to the line, where they shot 93%.
Still, UNI had a lead inside the final minute and a chance to extend it, but they never could, and then they fouled unnecessarily, allowing St. Mary's to take the lead. Then a bad turnover (see BUBraves2006 post above) and a couple more fouls allowed St. Mary's to secure the 5 point win.
