Pantagraph Story

Just after I read the 2nd article about their assistant track coach getting busted for an illegal substance, I went back to see the reader comments. But they had suddenly removed the article from the site.
Strange.

A coach/athlete gets caught taking an illegal substance/supplement for competition and that is grounds for calling it ISU's drug/substance abuse problem? Wow. Who were the other athletes and coaches that were also guilty?

So should Ray Brown's 2 positive tests (the 2 that were made public anyway) for marijuana, more accurately be described as Bradley University's drug/substance abuse problem? I don't think so. Not what I remember it being called on these boards anyway.
 
DC-- Bradley has had some substance abuse issues, and they have been dealt with strictly and severely, with every single one of the offending players gone now.
Can your guys say that?
 
Danny, do you even read the redbird board? There indeed have been multiple threads referring to Bradley's drug problems because one player tested positive and has been dismissed.
Just like the great redbird fans like to keep referring to Bradley's rampant cheating because of an inadvertant clerical error that they brought to the NCAA's attention.

Cooksey....since this is a basketball board I have refrained from commenting on the substance-related arrests occurring in other sports at ISU....but I suspect you don't even want me to get started, as the facts as readily available through your county clerk's site might even surprise you.


Diuetics are routinely banned by sports bodies, since they are commonly used to hide the presence of other drugs by flooding the urine sample with lots of dilute urine.
That's why if you are on such a drug, it is required that you must present medical evidence for its use.....something quite easy to do if you are taking it "legally" under the sports governing bodies' rules.

your own poster says it's not even illegal, it's just not allowed for athletic competion, yet it still falls under ISU having substance abuse and drug problems

Da Coach........the 'clerical error' as you like to call it, hasn't been mention on RBF in a long time as far as I can tell.

We all know how much you enjoy looking up and getting laughs about the indescretions of ISU-student athletes.

I never used the word "illegal"...so are you referring to me?

While you guys beat each other up about who's program's athletes better hide their indiscretions and what the definition of the word 'is' is, I find it tragic if the guy's Olympic hopes are ruined by an error in paperwork. If it was cheating then he deserves what he gets...
 
Mere play on words Danny. T's wording makes it appear that ISU has a rampant drug/substance abuse problem. Dyer, Sampay, Wiggins = substance abuse. It's a clear cut case of abusing alcohol and getting arrested for a DUI. No spin necessary.

This recent story about the track coach is more disturbing. I don't want to sound like I'm turning on my beloved Birds, but just as in the BALCO scandal or the USTAF typcially when a coach is involved in a scandal of this sort, an athlete or two are closely linked.

While I don't condone his actions and believe he should be FIRED. Let's hope he was only stupid enough to taint his own reputation and body instead of some impressionable college athlete.

I'll take a wait and see approach, but I'll be the first to send my letter to Dr. Z expressing my feelings, and calling for this coach to be relieved of his duties.
 
More substance abuse/DUI stuff in the news....

One of the kids who played against Bradley in the Iowa game, Dan Bohall,
was arrested over the weekend for "consumption/intoxication" and is immediately suspended....
and won't play in the Iowa game Wednesday against UNI, and maybe not even on Saturday against Iowa State.
Keep in mind...this kid IS 21 years old and not underage, and he was NOT even operating a motor vehicle!
This kind of discipline is in STARK contrast to some places that say a kid will be suspended then play him in the next game,
or who say they will wait until the process plays itself out, then conveniently forget the whole issue,
or places that just don't really have any discipline at all.

In some places, kids who violate laws, drink underage, get DUI's, get arrested, and even drive on licenses suspended
by their DUI's are still treated like spoiled brats and allowed to play and represent their university just as if nothing had happened.
We all know how the lax discipline at Iowa State came back to bite Greg McDermott in the Michael Taylor fiasco,
but nice to see Todd Lickliter standing up strong and saying things like:
"'You have a responsibility to your team, to your community and to yourself.
Do what's right. Make the right choice. Be responsible.'"
