Patrick O'Bryant won't be taking a 4th of July break. He is reported to be working out in Massachusetts today for the Boston Celtics, who are considering signing him as a backup center. See the next to last paragraph on page 2 of the article.--

Here is another mention of POB working out for the Celtics today (4th paragraph from bottom)--

Woow....Good Luck to PO'B.....its a shame the Bulls don't give him a shot....I really think he could play for them!

I am not comparing them in any way, but Robert Parish started his NBA career at Golden State before moving to the Celtics.

Good luck POB. Hope you end up with the Celtics. :)

Sweet. That would be great if he could sign-on with them.

Imagine learning from the likes of Garnett and playing alongside Ray Allen and Paul Pierce.

I think Doc Rivers practically used every player he had as the situation called from them. He even played Glen Davis quite a bit at times, so I think POB would get a fair shot at PT if he can prove himself.

And if POB signed on with the Celtics, he would have a great chance at the playoffs and a championship ring. Can anyone recall who was the last Bradley player to win an NBA championship ring?

3 ex-BU players have won NBA titles, the last was David Thirdkill in 1986.

Here is a listing of all Bradley players who played in the NBA.--

Here are the ex-BU players who played in the NBA playoffs--

Mitchell Anderson played with the Utah Jazz in the 1983-84 playoffs. He
appeared in only 5 games, as the Jazz were eliminated in the 2nd round.

Barney Cable appeared in the NBA playoffs with the Syracuse Nationals in 1959-1960 and 1960-1961, but they did not make it to the championship round.

Bob Carney played on the Minneapolis Lakers when they made the playoffs in 1954-1955. They won the Western Division semifinals against the Rochester Royals, but lost the Western Division finals against the Fort Wayne Pistons.

Hersey Hawkins played in the playoffs 8 times with the Philadelphia 76ers, Charlotte Hornets, and Seattle Sonics, but never made it to the NBA finals.

Steve Kuberski played on 4 different Boston Celtics playoff teams, 1970-1971, 1971-1972, 1972-1923, and 1975-1976. He made it to the finals twice, and won an NBA title with the 1975-1976 Celtics.

Jim Les was with 1 playoff team, the 1988-1989 Utah Jazz, but they lost in the first round.

Shellie McMillon played on 3 playoff teams, the 1958-1959, 1959-1960, and the 1960-1961 Pistons. None of those teams made it to the finals.

Patrick O'Bryant was on the Golden State Warriors' roster as a rookie in 2006-2007 when they made the playoffs. He did not see any action as the Warriors were eliminated in the 2nd round.

Anthony Parker has made the playoffs twice with the Toronto Raptors, 2006-2007 and 2007-2008, but has not played in the finals.

Roger Phegley played in the NBA playoffs 3 times, with the San Antonio Spurs in 1981-1982, and 1982-1983, and with Dallas in 1983-1984 but did not make it to the finals.

Al Smith made it to the ABA playoffs 3 times, with the 1971-1972 and 1972-1973 Denver Nuggets, and with the 1974-1975 Utah Stars, but never made the finals.

Joe Strawder made it to the NBA playoffs one ytear with the Detroit Pistons, 1967-1968, but did not make the finals.

Levern Tart made the ABA playoffs twice in his 4 year career, with the 1969-1970 New York Nets, and with the 1970-1971 Texas Chaparrals.

David Thirdkill made the NBA playoffs twice with the San Antonio Spurs in 1984-1985 and with the Boston Celtics in 1985-1986. He won an NBA title in 1986.

Chet Walker played in the NBA playoffs an amazing 13 straight season from 1962-1963 through 1974-1975, 1 year with the Syracuse Nationals and 6 more years after they moved to Philadelphia and became the 76ers, and 6 more with the Chicago Bulls. He won an NBA title with the 1966-1967 with the 76ers.

Elmer Behnke, Ray Ramsey, Mike Williams, and Voise Winters are the 4 out of 19 ex-BU players who have never played in the playoffs.
The list also does not include Danny Granger, who played 1 1/2 years at Bradley before transferring to New Mexico. He played in the playoffs his first season with the Indiana Pacers in 2005-2006.

You are right. Correct that line where I said he never played in the finals. He did play for Seattle that year and they lost to the Bulls in 6 games. But Hersey never played on a championship team in the NBA.

I don't think he's wearing Celtic green next year:

"The 7-foot center showed decent range and solid footwork taking feeds in the post. But when he hit the low post against Wisconsin's Brian Butch and Detroit Mercy's Ryvon Covile, who had each been practicing since 9 in the morning, O'Bryant was tugging at his shorts not even 15 minutes into the drill, struggling to muster enough strength to defend either. Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss pointed out that O'Bryant arrived in Boston at 1 a.m., although he tired quickly against players who had been on the court all morning. O'Bryant took the court at approximately 11 a.m."

You can't arrive out of shape to a try-out.

That is a joke right? Even if he was tired that is not an excuse to be out of shape and not being able to get up and down the court for more then 15 minutes. If he is out of shape and trying to get a job that is extremely disappointing news.

Sure would be nice if POB could make the Celtics, but if he is out of shape can we blame that on Don Nelson too?

The question is why would he be out of shape! He's young and get's paid a hell of a lot of money to get in shape. I hope this is wrong and maybe it had to do with something we are unaware of. If true he should just go to chef school and follow his passion because basketball is not one of them then.

Unfortunately, we probably don't know ALL of the facts to be making blanket POB statements.

-- Was he injured recently and unable to get into top shape?
-- Did he recently get over a bout with the flu?
-- Jet lag?
-- Stomach bug?

When you're in a "physical" occupation you don't have the same luxury that a "white collar" worker has... you must work physically even if you feel like cr@p. The rest of us can sit at work and get the job down without this physical stress.

But I do agree that if none-of-the-above applies then POB is blowing his "big chance".... and that would be sad!

Unless ALL of it applies, he should still be able to beat those "scrubs" if he really is NBA material. It sounds more and more like he's leaving the NBA. I haven't read anything positive about him in a long, long time. I hope he's getting a Visa ready.

How about this tough question: Is there any negative effect transferred to the BU program by POB's (apparent) inability to make it in the NBA?

Or stay and be exposed and never get the big pay day. He made the right choice by leaving this proves it even more.

Yes I agree.....thats why the wink is at the end of my comment.....he made the right choice and should have some money put away for a rainy day....still there should be no negatives at BU because of POB situation....he made it to the NBA...

Absolutely...He would have been a fool to come back. It more than likely would have cost him millions of dollars. There is nothing in his development (or lack thereof) after he left BU that would lead me to believe that he would have become the kind of player that would have been a top 5 pick in either of the last two drafts.
He had a great showing in the NCAA Tournament, he put himself in a position to be picked in the top 10 that year...and he made millions of dollars because of it...and that is awesome for him. Now, he has money in the bank (hopefully), and it will allow him some freedom to pursue whatever it is that he wants to do with the rest of his life.

Sorry, I didnt read the wink right.

I agree, no negatives for BU, we had a player taken in the top ten of the NBA draft. That is a selling point no matter how he plays thier.
