Peoria Journal Star is SOLD

There seems to be contempt for the PJS on this board, but as a newspaper editor I can say that this is not good news. GateHouse is a bottom-line-oriented company that puts out awful newspapers.

That is sad to hear, as it likely will result in a reduced quality of local news reporting and other print services.
And 88 I don't think there's a general dislike of the entire PJS.
I think some posters don't agree with the opinions expressed, which, of course, is their Constitutional right, is it not?

You're right, chitown. My bad. Should've been paying closer attention to what I typed, but I was thrown off my game when my wife switched the channel from the NIT to Sleepless in Seattle! Ugh.

Sleepless in Seattle will throw anyone off, let alone the surprise switch from college BBall. I'm just glad you recovered!!!!

I have no beef with the PJS. I have friends that work there, and do a d@mn good job at what they do. Sometimes though I think their message board is a safe-haven for Bradley-haters, and I don't think that bothers the people running the board too much. Oh well.

I have met and know Joe (BB Fan '77). Nice man. I used to like their board before this board was started. Back then, we (on this board) put up the good fight there. We tried to be civil and get our jabs in when we could. We caught our crap - lots of it. And it went on under the guise 'there are many different posters from many different backgrounds with many different teams they are interested in". So the battles were waged. But once this board started up, it became 'pro-BU' vs 'anti-BU' at that board. Hence, this is the 'Kool-Aide' board. (ONE EXAMPLE-> ) At least you never saw threads/polls last summer talking and in favor of ICC seriously beating Bradley this season. So give me the Kool-Aide here so I don't have to put up with crap like that!

Well what do you expect when Bradley and MVC people get on there and beat a dead horse like it's never been beaten??? (Illini schedule)

But as a newspaper publisher I can say that whether it is good news or not is yet to be determined.
How can you know the new owners won't do a markedly better job than the old west coast owners?
Anyway, the new owners will have the right to do pretty much as they please with what they own,
subject to stockowner approval.
Publicly traded companies are universally more concerned with profitability, and there can be
no doubt that will result in some changes at the Journal Star.
The new owners seem to have a committment to providing good local news coverage,
as they do with the Pekin newspaper, but what actually will happen is hard to predict.
I doubt the paper will move the lost dog stories to the front page.

Every year the Illini have a new schedule and every year it doesnt include any games against instate schools and so every year there will be a discussion about it.

I'm a Bradlley fan first and an Illini fan second. After all, they are my state school. However, if I was a season ticket holder in Champaign I'd be raising cane about the home schedule. I hope it improves.

I am curious why? Since the NCAA seems to really not care about non conference SOS or even playing on the road. Why would any U of I season ticket holder care. Go 13-2 non conference, win your games against Minn, Penn State and NW and your a tourney team. Pretty simple.

U of I can thank their lucky stars for having BU and Xavier on their schedule. Those two wins or atleast one of them got them into the tourney. I dont care that they beat Indiana. Isnt Indiana the only non lower division team they beat this year?

Just a couple days ago, the company that just bought the Peoria Journal Star, GateHouse Media,
has now completed the purchase of FOUR MORE newspapers, including one very close by.
GateHouse Just purchased the Rockford Register Star, plus other Gannett papers.
http://www.wrex.com/News/index.php?ID=17187
http://www.register-mail.com/stories/041307/BIZ_BCU3B9BH.GID.shtml

But here's something even more intriguing...

The price paid for the Rockford Register Star and 3 other small daily newspapers was $410 million!

But when GateHouse recently purchased the Journal Star plus SIX other daily newspapers AND two more weekly papers,
they paid only $380 million.
http://www.pjstar.com/php/index.php...p_of_the_journal_star_and_six_other_newspape/

Looks to me like the Copley people who sold their 9 papers (combined 270,000 circulation) for $380 mil
kind of got ripped off when the Gannett people got $410 mil
for just 4 considerably smaller papers (combined circulation 160,000) with much, much smaller circulation!

But then, I guess they have to pinch pennies and grab every bargain they can in order to pay their new (1st year) CEO:

"GateHouse CEO made $6.46 million in '06"
http://www.pjstar.com/stories/042007/BUS_BD0108IH.027.php

(PS-- BradleyFans.com is now accepting resumes and interviewing for its CEO position.
They pay slightly less than GateHouse, but I am going to submit my application! )

Yah, we've been talking about these sales at work. Gatehouse went from, I believe, owning only smaller papers in Illinois to owning three of the largest non-Chicagoland papers in the state. Between them and Lee (which I believe owns the Pantagraph, papers in Decatur and Carbondale and right-across-the-river papers in the St. Louis Post Dispatch and Quad-City Times), they own the practically all of the larger non-Chicago dailies. We were only able to come up with three larger one offhand that were owned by anyone else, Moline Dispatch/Rock Island Argus, Champaign News-Gazette and Belleville News-Democrat. After that you start getting to the smaller independent papers like the Quincy Herald Whig and La Salle NewsTribune.

My point, Houston, is that if I was a season ticket holder down there I wouldn't want to pay those prices for the non-conference home schedule they have year in and year out. Reminds me of the schedules we had at Bradley before the Civic Center.

And I find humour in Illini fans having orgasms over pounding a bunch of Savannah St's 81-34.

(I know Illini-Hack's, I picked only 1 game from 1 season, but every year is flooded with cream-puffs like that)

Don't get me wrong... I don't want a home-n-home with them every year (and I could care less if we ever played them again)... but goodness-freakin'-gracious.... the Illini could do a LITTLE homework and schedule a little better.

But don't do it UIUC, I'd rather throw you in the same ilk of Syracuse.
