PJS - Possible Candidates

As I stated on another thread, KW's list can be easily winnowed down to three candidates.

In no certain order

Tommy Amaker
Greg Gard
Rodney Terry

also... doesn't Michigan State have a highly regarded assistant? If so, I would include that person.

edit: make that 4... I just saw Paul Lusk on the list.

That would be Mark Montgomery

We can speculate all we want -- but here's a statement by Dr. Cross on the timing and openness of the hiring procedure...
""There is no timetable or deadline to hire a new head basketball coach."
A confidential national search ..will begin immediately.
No further statements are anticipated about the search or candidates until the hiring announcement."

The four pictures on the front page of the Wessler Times (PJS) today include three fired coaches and an assistant from an under achieving program. Is there any doubt that KW should join JL on the unemployment list?

I think the first or second list of people is really early in the process.

I wouldnt discount it, but lets see what the list looks like in a week or so.

I dont think people like scott nagy, and jay spoohour are real candidates.

i also think that

the princeton coach and tommy ammaker are real candidates.

I don't think the EKU guy is legit :)

The list is just wessler's speculation.. Has nothing to do with the confidential search conducted by the search firm.

Larry Brown is on my short list. Last I heard he was looking for a job! :-P

In reality I'd take him for the next 2 years over just about anyone. He would be worth the dollars spent on multiple levels. It's just never going to happen but there needs to be a bit of thinking outside of the box for this hire to make sense to me.

why are we paying the reported $50,000 search consulting firm fee when we already have a list of top candidates already?

Well I don't believe PJS got the list of candidates from JG and Dr Cross themselves so I am sure they arent going to look at the paper everyday to see who they should have come in and interview. Heck, JG and Dr Coss might as well just come on Bradleyfan for their list of candidates if thats the case... give me a break...

While I agree and like the way you think, I am coming back to reality with the fact that we couldn't afford him.

That is why I put "never going to happen." ;)

If we are tied down due to budget and what we can afford, I'm betting we will all be disappointed when this process is completed. I'm hoping there is a big time donor or two out there who is willing to write the check.

Understand the ;-) and very much agree!

Muller
Lusk
Gard
Amaker

All good candidates, but where is Montgomery at? Anyone from the Izzo tree would probably be a good get...

That said, why do I get the feeling that it's going to be someone not from this list or even close to it?

Oh, and reason I didn't mention Cooley or Johnson is because I feel the coach needs some ties to the Midwest

I respectfully disagree on the Izzo tree aspect. I don't think Tom Crean has lived up to the glitz associated with his name.

12 seasons as head coach with just 5 NCAA appearances although he's coached in the C-USA, Big East and Big Ten. Should be automatic.

Overall record of 218-161 (57%)
Big Ten 8-46 (14%)
Conference titles in 12 years = ONE
NCAA record in 5 appearances = 5-5

And keep in mind that 4 of his 5 wins were in the year D Wade led Marquette to the F4. Crean is 1-4 in the other 4 appearances and has not won a NCAA tourney game SINCE 2003. Those #s make Bruce Weber look good.

That would be Mark Montgomery

Montgomery might want a shot at a head coaching job..but here's my take...
I think he'll wait 'til a BCS offer comes along...and here's why........

1) Tom Izzo makes more than $3 mil per year and just turned down $6 mil to coach the Cavaliers, and it is rumored that his top assistants already make way, way more than BU would pay for the next head coach.

2) if he took at mid-major job - and a step down in salary - just to get a start-up shot at a head coaching position, and did poorly (check Tim Jankovich), then his shot at going back to a BCS spot is toast.

3) Just last year, when Tod Kowalczyk bolted from UW-GB and took $280,000 per year at Toledo -- Green Bay went after Montgomery...
(they also tried to woo Greg Gard) ...and both didn't even go for an interview...
At that time...it was also reported that Gard also turned down the Toledo job because he was already making more (recall that Kowalczyk got $280K) than Toledo was offering!

So I have to think if we want an assistant from a TOP BCS program, we are not going to get anyone's top assistant who's already getting $250K or more..
In the end -- it didn't hurt UW-GB to ask, but you can see who they settled for --
Brian Wardle -- the youngest head coach in D-I basketball -- a guy who was just promoted from his Green Bay assistant spot of 5 years.
He was the guy willing to take the amount offered by UW-GB...

If that is the case, and I have no reason to doubt anything stated here, then we are in for a long ride for the next few years. If JG does not want to commit more than that type of salary for a division 1 men's basketball coach, then we will get what we pay for!:(

Time to commit to the program JG, or the results spotlight will be entirely on you!

T - What you stated is what scares me if our Admin did not go out and get a commitment from some donors to pony up a large series of donations to pay the next coach. I've seen it before but I've never known BU high rollers to indicate that they would pull such a move. You would know better then most.

What are you talking about?

He beat Kentucky in the tournament the last year he was at Marquette and he put together two of the best recruiting classes I can recall in landing Wade, Henry, and Diener and then following that up with James, McNeal, and Matthews who took a team that was supposed to finish 12th, all the way to 4th place...

You can't possibly compare standing places from the Valley to the Big East and the Indiana program was an absolute mess to clean up...

At Marquette attendance increased by 70% and they won more games in his first 5 years there than they won under Al McGuire...

This isn't even about Crean but man, we'd be lucky to have someone of his caliber!
