Player Outlook: Sam Maniscalco

Nice coverage....thanks.......
Hey - you shoulda mentioned Sam's great driving basket that kept us in the game so Chris Roberts could nail his 70-footer!

I know some of you disagree with my view on Sam's future - let me know your thoughts on this one.

I like your outlook here, Joe. I agree that Sam is an a bit of a difficult spot for minutes, but I think we will regularly see a combination of McCain, Maniscalco and Warren in at the same time. (That's my predicted starting 3 anyway... who knows about the other 2.)

Sam has that leadership quality the team needs and will continue to provide so many intangibles for the team. I do think McCain will be more of the PG and Sam will just use his PG skills to help him as our 2 guard. But he'll still get 28-30 minutes a game, I think.

My take on SM is that he is the leader of this basketball team and I believe is the starter night in night out until he graduates. But, to be fair the point guard position really needs to come down to who is capable of making shots. I think both him and EM are very capable ball handlers and both have an ability to get to the lane.

But that is where this goes, neither showed a real strong ability last season to score consistantly when they got by defenders. Neither also showed a great ability to make shots reguarly from beyond the 3pt line. One or both really need to step their shooting. SM though is a fantastic FT shooter.

SM also must improve his footwork defensively. Way to often others were able to go past him off the dribble.

Regardless, he will see quality minutes all season, I really would prefer his minutes to be limited to the 1, he is to small for the 2 but he will play and he is definitly one of our most important players, especially with his experience... I still wonder where our season would have gone if he makes the lay up at ISU?

I agree that I'd like to see him play the 1, but JL seems to like EM there. SM will be considered a 1 1/2, with AW playing 2 1/2. I'm worried about the defensive arrangement when we play teams with bigger guards.
