Player Rankings Depend On Where the Player Commits

I just don't get the "40" and "50" ratings... it sounds to me like both basically mean "not evaluated" -- so why the difference? I thought originally maybe if it was juco/freshman... but that's not right either...

I agree. Someone said 40 means a player has not been evaluated and anything above 40 is that players' evaluation grade. That doesn't make any sense at all in the cases of Brown, Dunson, and Norris.

If it makes anyone feel better I just hit 51 in the rankings....expect to move up about "1" spot a year. :)

ESPN gives me little respect....

I was the one who said that if you were over a "40" you had been evaluated... I am not sure about the 50 rating though... it would seem as though they have not been evaluated either... you might be able to tell by if there is a description of their playing style and what not along with the rating... not too sure though

Actually, "40" and "50" both show "No evaluation available at this time." I'm not sure what the distinction is.

Here's a good article on Dave Telep of Scout.com...............

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/423/story/701883.html

I particularly like this quote: "As a high school kid I was an average Joe," says Telep, "but when I looked in the mirror I saw Magic Johnson. I was more Johnson than Magic."

I can relate

I like Dave Telep...he is probably as fair to the mid-major schools and the mid-major-caliber talent and lesser talented kids as anyone is.
Rivals doesn't even know schools like Bradley exist nor that kids like Sam Maniscalco or Jake Eastman exist, but Telep generally has a bit of coverage on most kids who sign anywhere.

By the way...here's something funny....

One of the kids Telep and others have been reporting a ton on is Ames, IA's Harrison Barnes, one of the top kids in the nation.
Here is a brand new story on Barnes...

but because Barnes is constantly being followed and viewed by recruiting gurus and coaches (when allowed), then Peoria's Donivine Stewart is also getting a ton of attention now.
Looks like it was a very smart move to change AAU teams and go with the All Iowa Attack.

However, I checked the site of the All Iowa Attack, and they aren't doing Donivine any favors, they have him listed as "Donivine Stuart".

even more evidence that a kid's ranking is fully dependent on where he verbals....

Latest example....a Class of 2010 kid out of Indianapolis North Central named Terone Johnson

He was pretty obscure but beginning to get attention...
Just a year earlier, the kid was ranked #307 in the nation and wasn't getting a whole lot of press....
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?p=42744&highlight=Terone+johnson#post42744

but the kid openly talked about wanting to go to Purdue, and yet had to wait until last fall before Purdue finally offered....he was still unrated...
http://purdue.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=892&CID=824799

Then, a month later, he snapped up the offer and verballed to Purdue.
(the only other offers he had were Butler and Cincy)
Suddenly he went from unrated, to 2-Star and remained 2-Star all the way through his junior year, then whe he had a good run in the Indiana playoffs, he jumped to 3-star, then dropped back to 2-Star when he was injured.

Also, he was overshadowed by teammate Stephen Van Treese, a Louisville commit...but he has a good junior year...but not necessarily outstanding...

BUT--- suddenly, scout.com adds an extra star to his rating, and now he's 3-STAR. Rivals follows suit.
Even the Purdue folks on their boards say this.....
"Scout is a joke -
They just added a star to Terone's profile. LOL I wonder what changed ....."
