Player transfers

Iowa State is definitely getting some good players in transfer but is it good and will it help in the long term to take so many transfers...
Clyburn -- like Chris Allen and Jake Anderson will end up giving the Cyclones only one single season of eligibility.
It is very difficult for various reasons to build consistency with so many transfers...who by nature are maybe a bit more likely to not be so coachable -- as many come in disgruntled (eg - Booker) - and some, like Jake, are very well traveled - having been at many schools...
Clyburn makes eight D-I transfers they have but it'll be only seven next year when Jake is gone.

Iowa State had three players on it's roster when Hoiberg took the job. Had he taken the traditional course of signing a bunch of spring leftovers last spring instead of taking the transfers, not only would we have sucked last year, but we would have had no experience this coming season with a ton of sophomores. Fred took the transfers because it gave us practice bodies last year, increased our talent and balanced our classes roster wise.

In college basketball, a lot of the success you have recruiting starts with success on the court. Fred knew he needed talent and top 100 kids are not knocking down the door to get into ISU right now. With that said, ISU did have three scholarship and one walk on freshman this year that got minutes. They will be joined by White in the sophomore class this year and we add a freshman in Tavon Sledge. So while we do have a lot of transfers, we will still have at least five underclassmen on scholarship this year so it isn't like we are not building for the future. We are actively chasing a ton of 2012 prep prospects and seem to be sitting well with several of them. I do not think that taking transfers will be the way Fred sustains the program, they are just how he is coshing to kick start it.

As per the coachability of some of these guys, I think it is EASIER to get the attention ot these players because they have already sat out a year redshirting before they ever set foot on the court and they know that this is their last chance to play D1 ball because transferring again is not an option usually. If you make a prep player mad, he might transfer. The risk of that happening to a transfer is much less.

Makes you wonder if he knows:

a) MORE than we do and that he has decided to leave after all (leading to another PJS retraction?)

-or-

b) LESS than we do, and saw that there was a release ASKED for, but not granted a few weeks ago.

Lets see how this plays out...

I'd go with b.

Two Alabama players are leaving and transferring ..
Jason Carter & Kendall Durant..
(Kendall Durant is Kevin Durant's cousin)

other players transferring --
Wally Judge - Kansas State
Kansas freshman Royce Woodridge

SIU's Gene Teague is getting interest from Seton Hall...

Sophomore Evan Gordon, little brother of Eric Gordon, is transferring from Liberty after an All Conf year..14.4 ppg, 2.9 reb, 2.4 asst..
this is exactly the same path Seth Curry just took - only one year at Liberty then he landed at Duke...

At Georgia Tech -- as most have heard -- ex-BU Recruit Iman Shumpert was very distraught with the firing of his coach and hiring of the new guy -- he is likely to leave...
Shumpert actually did it in a fashion that has a lot of people upset and saying he was rude and arrogant..
in the middle of the press conference to introduce new head coach Brian Gregory.. Shumpert tweeted he was outta there...

Rude. Sort of like letting your team find out you??™ve left as their coach via Twitter.

BTW does anyone have any statistics on kids transferring and broken down between coaching changes, Janking, hardship or any other variable for the last 20 so seasons. It just seems there are a ton more transfers then years past.

There are way more transfers the last couple years than there ever used to be. I have no statistics, but everyone recognizes this phenomenon.

Evan Gordon, after leaving Liberty, lands at Arizona State -- this will be a career buster -- he should have talked with Dodie's brother Brandon or Corey Hawkins...

also note that Chris Colvin committed to Arizona State!

Dayton's Juwan Staten ends up at West Virginia after first picking Penn State then reneging
Maryland's Martin Breunig lands at Washington

disgruntled Oregon guard Malcolm Armstead transfers to Wichita State
He will have to sit out a year then has only his senior season left

Syracuse's DaShonte Riley transfers to Eastern Michigan. He is a 7-ft center who played little as a freshman then sat out his 2nd year with a medical redshirt and now will sit out again to have two years left.

Eastern Michigan picks up their 2nd BIG TIME transfer in the past 24 hours --
In addition to DaShonte Riley from Syracuse, now they also land Glenn Bryant from Arkansas..

Brian Gregory at Georgia Tech loses his 2nd best returning player -- Brian Oliver transfers...

also St. John's transfer - former 5-Star Dwayne Polee -- lands at San Diego State

Arkansas fired their coach John Pelphrey and hired Mike Anderson.
But there is somewhat of a player mutiny. Shortly after Anderson was hired, Arkansas' point guard Jeff Peterson and forward Glenn Bryant asked for and were granted a release.

But Anderson is taking a hard line and now refusing to release last year's leading scorer Rotnei Clark-

There are rumors that other players wanted their release, but were told no. And now it is reported that at least 2 of Arkansas' highly regarded recruiting class that was recruited by Pelphrey, have asked for their release, and been denied.

Already Anderson is getting ripped for denying these kids' release-

Rick Majerus ... roster...Christian Salecich is gone and will transfer........
he's a kid Majerus went hard after and thought was going to be a star -- Salecich -- started almost every gamne as a freshman...then his playing time tailed off as......he quickly lost his starting spot..........

unfortunate news for Christian Salecich - ex-Saint Louis Billiken - who transferred and landed at Missouri Southern...
He has lost his final year of eligibility due to a ruling by NCAA about playing a season of post-grad play in Australia..
In the US - a year of post-grad play would be considered high school/prep school, but the NCAA rules that in Australia it equals a year of college.

Maryland's Martin Breunig lands at Washington

Former Bradley recruit Martin Breunig, a German import via St. John's Northwest Military Academy in Wisconsin, is on the move again. He initially committed to Maryland, which was way too high for the kid. Then he pulled out and went to University of Washington, where he rarely saw the court. He scored 1 point and averaged 0.1 point per game in the 9 games he appeared in last season. Now he is transferring to Montana, which may be a better spot for him.

ex-Saint Louis player Christian Salecich thought he was done with college basketball because of the ruling noted above..

but he appealed and the NCAA relented and he's now eligible immediately -
so he's gonna play for Lennox Forrester at SIUE this season!
