POB traded to Toronto

This certainly proves he was not ready to play in the NBA when he was drafted and appears that he is no closer to getting many minutes now, kind of wonder if he would have done things differently now and stayed at BU rather then leave early because of the money. I still believe he would have gotten the money anyway and been more prepared to play at that level.

I disagree wholeheartedly. He made the smartest move of his life. The longer you stay in college the more you are exposed. And, sadly, the powers that be look for flaws and things you CANT do as opposed to things you can. The same things that plague POB know would have plagued him for two more years at BU.

If you can't get better with the amount of time NBA teams put towards player-development then you aren't going to get better spending that same amount of time in the college game or in the MVC.

Taking the money was smart but you only get better by playing in games against competition and he has not done much of that plus we were working with him individually a lot more then what any of these teams are doing with him now.

I guess I disagree. You get better working on your game individually and against guys in 2 on 2, 3 on 3 type settings. Individual workouts make you a better player. You get to test that in competition.

POB had better competition every day in practice with the Warriors and Celtics than he would have had playing against Evansville and Drake.

I agree with everything you have said.... Great points! :)

POB was #9 in the draft and came out the year before the new NBA rule about being 1 year removed from high school. Big men were going to be out in droves the next year.

Financially, he had to do it.

POB did what was in his best interest. Last I heard he was making a pretty penny. Do I wish he would have stayed? Absolutley, but did he make the right desision based on financial consideration, again absolutely. If somone believes that there are other considerations that need to be taken into the equation well that's your issue not POB's.

I don't think there was ever much doubt that he wasn't NBA ready....but he did the correct thing. We can play the what if hindsight game with MANY issues and you may well be correct that staying two years MIGHT have gotten him more NBA ready...who knows.

BUT we could be sitting here after him playing two more years at BU with him suffering a career ending injury having a totally different conversation about WHY didn't he leave when his stock was so high.

BU or Take The Money, BU or Take The Money. BU or Take The Money:doubt:

TAKE THE MONEY

ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK

NO BRAINIER

One :?: for someone. How many years does he have to have before he is locked in for a pension:?:

In the business world a guy called Bill Gates left college early way before his parents thought he should and look how things turned out for him. College is suppose to be a vehicle to teach you on how to make a living better then the next guy and if it takes you 2 years well who needs a diploma?

As usual on this subject, I agree with opinions like yours, and I think I have a sense of reality.

I do not think there is a poster on this subject that believes that playing an extra year or two at BU would not have helped POB make the jump physically but the real issue is would you want to role the dice in his situation and leave a million plus on the table. I for one was writing up threads that he should have followed the Tim Duncan school of thought but let's not carry away, a few cool million in the bank feels so much better then a possible few millions in 2 years. Now that is having a sense of reality.

Ignoring the staggering opportunity cost and risk you take for injuries or poor performance by playing your last two years in college, even just the cost of money of waiting two years on a contract like POB got goes some way towards justifying his early departure.

Reality....hmmm...do I take a couple of million for a couple of years right now.....or stay in school and maybe get that chance again.....

reality tells me take the money NOW.....put it away and if I don't make it.....go back to school and get my degree.....live off the money I put away....and work a job I love...

I basically agree. Sure a year or two at BU and he would have entered the NBA at a better level than he entered 2 years ago. But 2 years at BU would not have been as effective as 2 years in the NBA/Development League.

He struck while the iron was hot.

Well there are a lot of good restaurants in Toronto......;-)

.. and he has connections to get a good potato

Here is an article from the Toronto press about the trade- it refers to POB this way--
"The seven-footer from Idaho was the No. 9 pick by Golden State in the 2006 draft, played sparingly for two seasons there before signing a free-agent contract this past summer with Boston."
