After runs to the Final Four and Sweet Sixteen, Loyola Chicago head coach Porter Moser has agreed to a deal to become the next head coach of Oklahoma, per sources. Moser helped put the Ramblers back on the grand stage.
 
Moser reported will sign a 6-year contract, though salary has not yet been made public.
He will have a rebuilding process at Oklahoma next year. A 4th player just entered the Transfer Portal, and it appears they may lose their top 3 scorers and a number of their younger players.

There has been no official confirmation from Oklahoma or from Porter Moser, but it is now being reported widely that they two sides have reached an agreement for Moser to become the next Oklahoma head coach. This makes a lot of people who predicted Moser would not leave Loyola look a bit silly.
Money is usually the determining factor. So unless Moser pulls a Dana Altman, it looks like he is gone to Oklahoma (recall that Altman accepted the head coaching job at Arkansas in 2007, then quit and returned to Creighton a day and a half later).


Oklahoma is one of the richest college sports programs in the country. A USA Today survey from a couple years ago ranked their athletic budget #8 among all colleges-

Most of that money is derived from football, but it allows Oklahoma to spend lavishly on all their sports. Beside the doubling or tripling of his salary, Moser will have a recruiting budget that will dwarf any school in the MVC, and he will be able to pay each of his assistant coaches hundreds of thousands of dollars more than what assistants in the MVC earn.

It will be interesting to see if he takes any of his current assistants with him. He lost his top assistant coach (Associate Head Coach Brendan Mullins) 2 years ago when Mullins left to join his brother at SIU. Now his assistants are Jermaine Kimbrough, who has been an assistant coach at various colleges for over 20 years, but has been at Loyola for only 2 years, Drew Valentine, who is in his 4th year with Moser, and whose claim to fame is that he is the less heralded brother of Michigan State and Chicago Bulls guard Denzel Valentine, and Matt Gordon, who has been at Loyola the longest (this was his 7th season as an assistant coach). He is an Illinois State grad, but never played college basketball.

IMO, Moser would be smart to retain Jim Molinari, who was an assistant under Lon Kruger. But I would expect he will most likely hire an all new staff.

Would Cameron Krutwig consider transferring to Oklahoma for his final year of eligibility?
 
There are reports that Porter was offered a 10 year deal at 2.2 million a year. plus perks such as Cubs season tickets.
 
Sad to see Moser leave the Valley, but you sure can’t blame him. That’s a pretty big blow the our conference and it will be interesting to see if they replace him by promoting someone from within or not.

As far as Krutwig goes, being an Algonquin boy, I’d be very surprised to see him transfer, though less surprised to see him change his mind to return for another season. He’ll certainly have the opportunity to play professionally somewhere if that’s his desire. He seems like a classy guy and feel fortunate we got to see him play.

That is being unofficially reported as the Loyola offer to try to keep Moser. If true, it would seem to suggest Oklahoma's offer was probably in excess of $2.5 to $3 million/yr.
The Cubs tickets alone are worth about a million bucks, right?
 
Nearly every media outlet is reporting that the deal is done, but there is still no official confirmation from either Oklahoma or Loyola that Porter Moser is leaving Loyola to take the Oklahoma job. Loyola's webpage still shows Moser as the head coach.
That is a little strange. ESPN is about the only major sports outlet that is still reporting that Moser is only "in talks" with Oklahoma.
Is there still be a chance this is not a "done deal" yet? We should find out today.
 
Moser should definitely take the OU job, it is in his best interest.

prior to the past four years Moser didn’t even have a winning record as a head coach and had been fired from ISU, and was on the hot seat at Loyola.

IMO as an athletic director from a power school I wouldn’t consider Moser. I’m not saying he will fail at OU, but considering the only success Moser has had as a coach was in a four year period and with many of the same players, in particular Krutwig, there is a high probably Moser’s success may have been a one time event.

a lot of people were claiming rumors that Loyola could move to the A10 if Moser stayed etc. if I was a commissioner I’d have the same viewpoint though...Loyola has been a dumpster of a program since 1988 and had I think 2 winning seasons in a 25 yr span.

Personally I was disappointed when Loyola joined the MVC. I didn’t think they were strong enough. Then if course we get this 4 yr miracle run. However, I think it is far more likely Loyola reverts to the program it was in the 90s-2000s than continue where it has been the past few years, even if Moser had stayed.

Coach Mo has never been out of work as a coach since he was hired as Joey Meyer's assistant in 1979 (except by choice for the 2 years after Bradley fired him in 2002, and was still paying him). He is well connected and very well respected for his coaching. I think he'll get other offers to coach somewhere. On the other hand, Jim is 66 years old, and he might want to take some time off.


Also, as noted in the Coaching Carousel thread, it's being reported that Loyola will name assistant coach Drew Valentine as their new head coach.
 
I believe this is a big part of a problem that effects the Missouri Valley ( as I am sure it does other conferences ). A coach makes a name for himself then one of the bigger schools swoops and offers 3 times the salary. When ever a coach leaves and they hire a new one I think it takes about 3 to 4 years to build program back up
 
Just watched the press conference of Lon Kruger.I followed him mainly because of coach Mo and long relationship as friends.WOW,what an amazing humble human being.If you haven't watched that press conference I encourage you to do so.
