Post Game: BU Loses 59-75 @ Mich. St.

Well I am not one of the people that usually complains about Sam. I really wonder how badly he is hurt. That was the worst game I can remember him having in his career. All around, shot wouldn't fall, got the ball taken away several times, just a bad game. That and the free throws really cost us.

Don't get me wrong as I like SM with his constant hustle and toughness, but he thinks he has more ability than he does and constantly gets himself into a position where he can't make a play. Being hurt doesn't make you drive into traffic over and over again losing the ball most of the time--unless you have a headache and can't think straight.

Maybe his injury is hurting his shot? It is flat and has little chance of going in from the angle it is coming toward the basket. He needs coaching from Aaron Zobrist who would give his shot more of a chance of going in because of his high arch. Or, Sam needs to sign up for a physics class and learn the dynamics of a ball going through a hoop as it has a higher probablility of going in if it is coming straight down. His shots are also not "soft" enough for him to get a good bounce. He shoots like he is trying to break the rim! JC had a "soft" shot and he could rim them in every once in a while. Until SM learns not to shot the ball 100 mph with little arch he will never be a consistently good shooter, hurt or not, period.

Beatable, maybe, I agree, but the worst MIchigan State has ever played? I think that is a little exaggerated. MSU shot 47% in the second half and 42% overall, and 9-19 (47%) from three- far from the worst they have ever shot, and not even close to the worst they have played this year (see their stats against Maryland, among other games).
They outrebounded Bradley 49-38, and Bradley has been outrebounding most teams they've played. They made their free throws (80%), and they got very good production from their deep bench.

I thought MSU played well, maybe not the best they could, but they were solid, and they had those big physical forwards, to go along with big, quick, good-shooting guards. That is a very difficult type of team for anyone to beat, let alone a small BU team, missing their top scorer AW, and missing Will Egolf, and with SM playing hurt.

They shot 47% in the second half, but how many of those were put backs--at least 5. and for some reason the 3's fall more often when they got those second shots.
I've never seen an Izzo team make so many unforced errors.

I indicated elsewhere that our failure to use our size against MSU would result in the Spartans breaking away with high% 2 pt shots, and we would need to shoot 45% on 3's to make a game out of it if that's how we chose to play. And we chose to play that way and shot 20% and were not competitive, accordingly.

I mentioned SamM's flat shot on the chat yesterday & someone made the point that maybe he was rushing it a bit - Just like a golf swing you can develop bad habits in a jumpshot and that can come on for any of a number of reasons (injury, rushing it, defense, trying too hard or pressing). I think he had a little bit of DR fever yesterday and wanted to show his leadership instead of just letting the game come to him. Ruff always had his best games when he didn't try to put the team on his shoulders.

I know when I played as a young man if I found myself in a slump I went looking for help - let's hope after watching the tape SM does the same because I think essentially he has the ability to be a good shooter (btw - anyone remember JC's soph year?).

I'm just trying to see where you are coming from, what kind of lineups do you want us to go big with? SS and DC? SS/DC and AT? Just wondering

I agree Rusty - What exactly could we have done better personnel-wise or gameplanning-wise? As I said in another thread, we could have the best gameplan in the world (I thought ours was pretty darn good) and still lose convincingly because we were simply overmatched. We did. I'm not really sure what you think BU could have done differently strategy or personnel-wise to win that game.
