Postgame thread- BYU 70 BU 60

.... Still don"t like our substituion patterns and if we play the right guys we will have a great season, just concerned why it seems like we don"t have the correct players in and this seems to be Jim"s mo.

I thought Jim's M-O was he didn't teach/have rebounding fundamentals. Or was it his "In-Game Coaching" abilities? Why didn't he use the "use-it-or-lose-it Time out"? He's a liar cause he doesn't tell the press his starting line-up and hand over his play-book to the press.

Join the "never-happy" crowd. You can get write-ups in your local rag from the pjs and feel all righteous and happy.

I think when Warren is at full force(to me he looks about 80%) and TB is back along with Will Egolf in full swing we are going to make some noise. CROB has so much potential it is scary.

Mcain and Dodie looked pretty weak tonight. I like Simms.

What kind of name is Jimmer?

The BU stats show Milos got in the game but shows 0 minutes. The GameTracker reported that Ryan Phillips was in the game briefly, but now it has been corrected to show Milos.

The game was close and we had a chance but we had Thompson and Dunson on the floor most of that time, are they limiting Egolf"s minutes ? When Will was on the floor good things were happening.
After watching the Lewis game and the BYU game our starters should be"
Maniscalco
Warren
Roberts
Brown
Egolf
These 5 players are the ones that are making things happen.
Mccain is struggling to run the offense at this time.
Singh needs to step up his game for a 6th yr. player

I agree with the general sentiment. Plenty to work on, but no reason at all to panic. I would like to see AW assert himself more. I know he's still shaking off the rust, but he had a very quiet 13. He needs to be the #1 option, not SM. (This isn't intended to be a knock on Sam at all. He had a nice game, and we definitely need his offense, too, but AW should be getting more shots than him.)

I agree!

Overall this was a very encouraging game. To only lose by 10 without our best rebounder and 2nd to 3rd scoring option, on the road where it's near impossible to win, in front of 16,000 fans and with only playing 1 exhibition..... I'd say this is no 6th place Valley team. Need to pull out a win in Vegas in order to salvage this non-conference season, pending all non-conference wins besides Vegas rest of way. Overall, I am satisfied, lets get Brown back and roll with this puppy.

Several factors keyed into tonight's loss...

-Brown definitely would of cut into that -12 rebound margin, including several plays where BYU had 2 or 3 offensive boards in 1 sequence. He also would of given us at least another 10 points that we lost by.

-Dodie playing 25 minutes and not scoring, including missing 2 straight 1 and 1's when it was a 7 point game.

-Missed at least 4 to 5 easy point blank layups, that would of been another 6 to 8 points.

-Can we get a double team on Fredette? I got sick of watching him blow by guard after guard. He set his season game high in FT attempts tonight.

-Moving screens, I think we were called for 3 or 4 of those tonight.

-Free throws, gotta work on the FT's again. Missed 9 of them tonight.

When will everyone realize that Sam Singh has peaked? We should know what to expect.

I think everyone is pretty realistic when it comes to what Sam S. can do.
He played more tonight than he is usually going to because of Taylor Brown's suspension.

I'll certainly wonder about TB. It looked like we had 3 main O threats this game, SM, AW, and CR; a 4th threat could make a nice difference in several situations. Plus we'll never quite know how much extra energy the guards had to expend defending slightly larger guys.

It is fustrating to see no backup for the 4 spot..

Overall, I guess I feel OK about a loss (because we did not have TB) and I feel a little better for not paying $2.99 to get the sports pack this month to watch this one game.

Dodie is another option, he's just a streaky player. Look at conference play last year. Here are his point totals: 9, 18, 15, 2, 14, 9, 13, 4, 13, 2, etc. He's a good scorer too, he just doesn't seem to get acclimated into the offense some games.

I agreed completely, with Dodie and AT being the first off the bench. I think AT will be a solid sub by the time mid conference play comes around. Many of the things I excused McCain for last year because he was a freshman are no longer excusable. He's a sophomore now and with that comes a higher expectation. Singh to me is what he is, good for 10 minutes a game of solid 5 spot. MK is unknown. I think at this point I'll take DSE off the bench before McCain actually. Part of that is because fans are attracted to potential, whether it actualy exists or not. IMO DSE seems to have the playmaking ability McCain sometimes exudes while not having to sacrifice large minutes to a player who cannot score himself.

Great post!

A couple things that stuck out to me was a missed rebound when we had our entire team under the basket....all FIVE of them and we didn't get that rebound! Also, I didn't much care for SM, EM, and DSE all on the floor at the same time!

I was encouraged by the way we played a very good team on the road to open the season. Not bad for the predicted 6th-best team in the Valley against the clear choice to win the Mountain West. Looking forward to heading to Carver on Sunday!

People are tough on McCain and I'm ready to say I think he should be coming off the bench but he DID some good things last night also.

Sure, as the pg, we need more but he had a few nice drives to the basket AND he really battles (and wins some) for rebounds.

I don't think he turned the ball over too much but he also didn't have many assists...of course who did?

Tough game to start the season, but at least, we scrapped and maded it close.

My excitement for the season start immediately deflated after hearing Brown was suspended. I guess it was expected, but I had forgotten about it. I can't wait to see the team at full force after his return.

Random thoughts....

I liked our energy..especially the 2nd half. SM played well but needs to not force some things. AW looks 80-85%. Disappeared at times but played well when he was in the flow of the offense.

Still not so sure why so much SS over WE....I'm hoping its becuase they are limiting WE's minutes for awhile. He brought more enrgy and skill down low. Oh, and Will, dunk those bunnies. PLEASE.

Is it to late to r/s Milos? If you aren't going to play a game where TB is out when you going to play?

AT, at least he doesn't look totally lost. Just need to see continued progress from the kid.

I liked out D but I would have liked to see us guard the 3 better and give them more opps down low.....I dunno......just too mnay open looks but 60 points tells me that, overall, not TOO bad.

Need more offense. TB would have been a nice additional option. Hope you learned your lesson. KUDO"S to JL for NOT sweeping this under the table like he probably easily could have. I HOPE this suspension came from HIM and NOT from above.

Overall I'm not TOO upset. We battled and had our chances. 2nd half poor Free throws and not giving them so many second chances while getting very few of our own really hurt.

I'll ask this becuase watching the game at the FH with Romar we both saw the same thing but we MIGHT be biased :) and while its a great place to watch a game the TV was so bright it wasn't easy to see......seemed like the "Jimmer" got alot of touch fouls while we were getting hit pretty hard at times with NO calls. First, yeah, thats life on the road but you saw some good D from Sam and Edge and they got whistled and looked quite perplexed as if saying " what in the world am I suppose to do"

Sam got HAMMERED out top late with NO call...even the BU students, in between texts, saw THAT one and he got slapped on a reach-around which is USUALLY an automatic call on that fast break turn-over.

Again..biased but I can see why they are so tough at home IF thats the case.

Overall the game turned out better than I thought, without TB the Braves lost a lot of energy down low so the 10 pts loss on the road in a hostile enviroment isn't all bad! Still would like more out of the 5 spot, those #'s will not help this team win games and I also wonder why MK did not play after getting all those minutes in the exibition last week? With TB out MK would have gotten some boards and enough pts to make a difference(still not a fan of the 4 guard)! I was surprised to see DSE gets soo much time and think he will help out when he settles in! I hope that DD just had an off night, he has to score 8-10 a game IMO being a SR and one of the team leaders! SM, AW and CR will get their pts but they need some serious help inside and I hope we can get that handled real soon as not to rely on the outside shot every game, the missed bunnies and moving screens are becoming a nusence!

I wasn't able to watch or listen. But looking at the box score, that rebound column is scary. I guess TB would help with that. Overall the score isn't bad. I wish we had shot better but not bad without Taylor.

You're correct, he can be another option, but he wasn't last night and we needed another option last night. As a guess, he probably had to take on a JJ sort of defending a much bigger guy role (Because of no TB) which makes O problematic.
