Preseason Exhibitions

Murray State wins 75-70
For Xavier, All Wright played just 15 minutes, scored 3 pts
Xavier was just 2-15 from the arc

For Murray State, Fred King 15 pts, Brayden Shorter 15, KJ Tenner 12, Roman Domon10, Mason Miller was just 1-9, 2 pts
Bradley recruit Tristian Ford did not play

Here’s a surprise
BYU is ranked #8 nationally in the AP preseason poll & have who many rank as the top player in college basketball, AJ Dybantsa.
They just lost to Nebraska 90-89 with Dybantsa scoring 30 on 10-19.
But Nebraska has a stud named Rienk Mast who scored 31 on 10-15 - including 7 for 8 from 3-point!

I’m thinking we’ll see a few nice writeups about Rienk

Check this post & quote from Dybantsa

For those who don't remember, Rienk missed all of last year (2024-25) after undergoing another ACL repair and rehab for an injury suffered in May of 2024. Recall that he had the same injury in the spring of 2019, causing him to miss the entire 2019-20 season at Bradley. It's great to see him come back after a 2nd ACL repair and be able to play this well.

some have St. John's ranked #1 in the preseason...but they almost lost their exhibition today to Towson.
St. John's scored only 21 in the first half, trailing 29-21- and Towson led most of the game with St. John's only
taking the lead for good in the final 10 minutes and winning 73-63, outscoring Towson by 11 at the FT line...

Murray State wins 75-70
….
Murray State had a little advantage in that they started practicing way back in July because they went on a pre-season exhibition tour. Then they played 3 games as well - so they had a 1-2 month head start in practicing and games. But beating Xavier still stands out and they will be one of the strongest teams in the MVC.

It's reported that there were 12 NBA scouts present at the Nebraska-BYU exhibition game (they were there to see BYU's super-freshman AJ Dybansa). I'm guessing none of them had heard Rienk Mast's name before. But maybe a couple of them might keep an eye on Rienk now. I am not expecting him to be drafted next summer, but he can definitely boost his stock if he keeps playing like he did yesterday.

Here is Kevin Young, the head coach of BYU, commenting about Rienk Mast. He and Dybansa both said Rienk should be the #1 draft pick by the NBA next year (jokingly)-

....

Tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 19) Illinois State plays an exhibition game at Illinois.
....
ISU's starters:
Ty'Reek Coleman- freshman from Aurora
Boden Skunberg- grad senior, transf from N. Dakota State
Ty Pence- junior
Jack Daugherty- sophomore
Brandon Lieb- grad senior, transf from Illinois
Illinois starts 2 freshmen, Keaton Wagler & David Mirkovic

update- midway through the first half, both teams shooting poorly but Illini up 19-9, ISU with 6 early turnovers and Illini holding a 14-7 rebounding advantage

Hmmm... ISU will be ok, because surely Johnny Kinzinger and Chase Walker will always give them an extra 20 points per halfIMG_4701.jpeg

OMG
what's worse,
playing Green Bay on the road and only winning by single digits with freshmen playing pretty much the whoole game,
or playing Illinois when three Illini starters are out and getting clobbered by 23 in the first half?

Halftime score
Illinois 47 - ISU 23
ISU is 9-26 overall, 4-16 from 3-pt
outrebounded 25-13,

btw-- Illinois is not at full strength- they have four probable starters sitting out, Petrovic, T. Ivisic, Stojakovic, Ty Rodgers

Washington is playing an exhibition vs UNLV
Cellus’ son Latham Sommerville should be starting for Washington but instead he’s deep bench playing fewer minutes than anyone else on the team.
I don’t get it. He’s a stud and needs to play where he’s appreciated. I know a spot that the fans will love him & he’ll be a star.

wow- ISU got absolutely smoked bg time.
They weren't in it from the opening tip.
The only bright spot was Daugherty hitting 5-11 from 3-point
One of their freshmen, Mason Klabo played 19 minutes off the bench and kinda proved he's not shy-
he took 1/5 of all the shots ISU took and went 2-11
and apparently by agreement, because of the short rosters, the teams agreed that nobody would foul out, so
one guy had 6 fouls and a couple others had 5 but nobody fouled out.

Murray State plays an exhibition today (Saturday, Oct. 18) at Xavier. Looks like it is available to watch on video stream and follow Live Stats-
https://goxavier.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule
Xavier has three MVC transfers on their roster- All Wright, the MVC Freshman of the Year from Valparaiso last season, Isaiah Walker, who played 4 years at Belmont, and was a starter the last 2 years, and Gabriel Pozzatto, another All-Freshman player in the MVC last year and runner-up for Freshman of the Year at Evansville.

Tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 19) Illinois State plays an exhibition game at Illinois. That will be televised on the Big Ten+ Network.

News today- Four Illinois State players will not be available to play today-
Chase Walker
Johnny Kinziger
Cameron Barnes
Ty Blake

Here are a few exhibition scores from Friday night-
Southern Illinois 84 Austin Peay 79
Cincinnati 100 Michigan 98
Indiana 107 Marian 46
Creighton 71 Iowa St 58
Notre Dame 77 Butler 76
Boise St 89 Idaho 83
Nevada 80 Utah 77
Clemson 83 Presbyterian 44
I hope there’s going to be an explanation given for sitting the ISU guys. This isn’t a good look as-is.

The Illinois State website's recap of the exhibition match said this:
It was reported by one observer that Chase Walker was wearing a boot on his foot

In other preseason exhibition news...
DePaul has finished last or next-to-last in the Big East for 17 straight years, and they are picked to finish dead last again this season.
But in an exhibition game today, DePaul beat Loyola 92-90 in OT.

Exhibition games Monday, Oct. 20-
-Charlotte vs North Carolina Wesleyan
-Eastern Washington
-Monmouth vs Rhode Island College
-Wright State vs Ohio
-Northern Kentucky vs Ashland
-Houston Christian vs Southern Miss

One interesting preseason exhibition game last night was Duke vs. UCF. It featured Cameron Boozer, a Duke freshman that some are ranking as the best freshman in the country, and possibly the next #1 overall NBA Draft pick next summer.
Interestingly, this week, the AP Preseason All-American team was announced, and they left Boozer off their team-
https://balldurham.com/duke-s-camer...son-all-america-team-is-released-01k81ea0sw2d

Maybe that was motivation for him, as he scored 33 points, had 12 rebounds and 4 assists.
Duke pulled away in the 2nd half to win by 25 points, 96-71-
