Quin is Gone

CBS Sportsline is listing Dana Altman as a candidate, along with Greg McDermott and Chris Lowery

Gregg Doyel does make one obvious error. He says this about the MVC--
If Stewart had his choice, though, it would be Altman. They've known each other since the early 1980s, when Altman was at Moberly (Mo.) Junior College. Their connection grew when Altman coached at Kansas State from 1990-94. Altman has spent the last 12 years in the Missouri Valley Conference, going 235-125. Stewart knows the validity of an MVC pedigree; he came to Missouri in 1967 after a brief run at Northern Iowa.

Of course, Northern Iowa was not in the MVC in 1967, and didn't join the MVC until 1991. So Norm Stewart never coached in the MVC.
 
Filling in for Coach Quin Snyder is Melvin Watkins, who has been assistant at Mizzou for only a year.
He was hired after he was canned at Texas A&M. He had a six year record at A&M of 60-111, producing year after year of terrible performances out of top 100 recruits. (he had 8 Top-100 recruits in his 6 years there and was sub-.500 every year.)

He was replaced by Billy Gillespie.
Also an assistant at Mizzou is Lance Irvin, who was Watkins' assistant at Texas A&M.
The A&M/Irvin/Watkins connection is what Quin wanted in order to get the talent out of Chicago.

Will the players who have eligibility remaining consider staying at Mizzou? Several of the players have expressed anger that their coach was pressure to leave in mid-season.

An article this morning checked with each of the top recruits that Quin Snyder had secured for next season.

The top kid is Ty Morrison, widely hailed as the top junior college player in the nation.
Morrison along with his juco teammate Vaidotas Volkus at Redlands Community College (OK), both were caught off guard and said nobody had alerted them to Snyder's exit until they heard about it in the news.
Both expressed severe concern and were called by interim coach, and present assistant Melvin Watkins.
Neither had decided on whether the present events will change their minds but they did express uncertainty.

Keon Lawrence, one of the top players in New Jersey averaging 31 ppg was also heavily recruited by Duke before choosing Mizzou, also expressed concern, as he wants to be loyal to coach Watkins, but isn't sure if Watkins will be retained.

Chicago prep standout, Chris Singletary, who is now at Florida Prep Academy is also verbally committed to Mizzou, but has not spoken about the events.

It will be intertesting to see the scramble for all these top recruits and the Indiana kids if they do decide to go elsewhere.

Quin is gone, but a federal investigation into fraud at the junior college where some Missouri players picked up some easy credit hours goes on. Could it lead to the Missouri coaches? It sounds like this writer thinks it could.


Ricky Clemons earned something like 24 credit hours there in just a few weeks, and another player who went on to MU, Randy Pulley, padded his transcript at Barton with six hours of credit accrued during a three- to four-day visit. I wish I could have gotten through college that easily.
 
The end of the Quin Snyder era is now officially upon us.
Sure he left a couple weeks ago and his assistant Melvin Watkins has been coaching, but his team was still going with at least some hope of playing on.
Last night they lost to a pretty weak Nebraska team and their season is ended.
They are 12-16, finished 11th in a 12 team conference, and have no hopes of even an NIT bid.
