Racing tragedy

A tragedy has occurred at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway today where it was just announced that 33 year old English driver Dan Wheldon was killed in a massive pileup. Wheldon was a 2-time Indianapolis 500 winner, including this year's. He was universally liked and respected by fans and drivers. The race was halted and cancelled.

I saw the video of the crash online and that made me sick! I don't understand why people watch this sport hoping that something like this will happen. This reminds me of ancient Rome when people jammed the Colliseum hoping to see lots of blood and gore. That made no sense back then, and it makes no sense now! My thoughts and prayers do go out to Wheldon and his family though.

I agree with you and share the disgust you have for people who watch racing hoping for crashes, but you shouldn't believe this is the reason that all racing fans watch races. This is a terrible tragedy, all my thoughts and prayers go out to Wheldon's family and friends.

That's why I watch Horse Racing, Auto racing is not for me.
 
I would say only a small percentage watch racing for the crashes, mainly the casual fan or someone just browsing thru the channels. Serious to fatal Injuries can happen in any sport.

Most fans have their favorite driver and love the thrill of the speed, power/noise and watching cars go over 150 mph with bumpers only inches apart. It may be boring to watch on TV but in person it's pretty amazing.

It's a shame that his whole family either witnessed it in person or was watching live on TV. Just a horrible incident overall.

Are you a race fan or just a casual observer? I have been covering racing professionally for 25 years now and I can tell you I know of NO race fans who go hoping to see an accident like this. Your comments are way off base.
