Recruiting/AAU notes

I have spoken to a couple people who were at the team camp in Champaign and reviewed a few first hand reports.

Here is a summary of what went on..........

---Washington, MO senior (2008) Scott Suggs was widely viewed as the best player there.

"he 6-foot-6 wing prospect was arguably the best player in attendance on this day, showing the ability to score in a variety of ways. Although not a great athlete, he has good quickness and skills. Very long kid that has gained strength over the past year and has very good body control. His spin move makes it very tough for defenders to handle him, and he can use either hand to finish around the hoop.

Matt Humphrey -- Matt Humphrey (Chicago Hales Franciscan) has the build that talent scouts love and a sweet lefty jumper....he showed a better ability to pass and handle the basketball and didn't look like just a stand still shooter. Defensively he is very, very good...

Lewis Jackson (Decatur Eisenhower) Jackson was not expected to play due to his wrist injury, but while sitting on the sidelines during their first game he told his coach he was ready to play. He then proceeded to drain a game winner in Assembly Hall. He showcased his athleticism repeatedly on this day, getting to the basket at will and setting up his teammates. He also did a nice job guarding the bigger Suggs. Questions still remain about his jump shot and size, but Jackson is player that college coaches are lining up to sign.

Joseph Bertrand (Sterling) Bertrand still hasn't figured out how good he could be, but he is beginning to get that swagger that the great players have. When he gains consistency, he will be one of the top players in the country. The 6-foot-4 point guard has great vision and his 3 point shooting is getting better. He gets into the lane when he wants to and he has the size and athleticism to finish, even though he would rather distribute. His crossover dribble is dynamic.

D'Mitri Riggs (Bloomington) Riggs has all of the tools, but sometimes lacks the desire. He is long for a 6-foot-2 guard and has good quickness and can really get after it defensively. He is very left handed and a streaky shooter, but he can really control a game when he wants to.

Ex-BU player Billy Wright's Indianapolis Pike....
"... very impressive. They play hard and really pressure on defense."

Notable no-shows....Verdell Jones (knee injury he suffered while lifting weights on Thursday. Jones is scheduled for an MRI on Monday afternoon), Jeremy Robinson (Decatur Eisenhower) is out until at least July with a torn ACL. Robinson says he will begin playing in July, but is not expected to be 100% until December.
DJ Richardson...had other committments.
(although at least one source says his absence was meant to "send a message".)

PS... a couple mentions of some BU recruiting targets.

Marcus Jordan, youngest son of Michael Jordan and a class of 2009 player, is transferring from Loyola Academy to Chicago Whitney Young High School. This has been rumored for several months, but now is confirmed--

Young High School already has several Division I prospects, including a couple that Bradley has recruited--

Here is another report on DJ Richardson from the Peoria event:

"Peoria Central sophomore D.J. Richardson is arguably the best player in the state of Illinois for the class of 2009. Richardson was not present at the University of Illinois team camp today due to previous commitments with head Coach Troy Johnson and the Illinois Stars at a Peoria AAU tournament. ???‚¬?“It wasn???‚¬?„?t anything against the University of Illinois,???‚¬?? Richardson explained. ???‚¬?“Coach Johnson really wanted me to be there for the team, because I played for our U-16 and U-17 teams today. I played 10 games.???‚¬?? Richardson further explained that he notified Illinois assistant coach Wayne McClain that he would not be able to make the team camp with his Peoria Central teammates.

Richardson also emphasized that he is firm on plans to return to Peoria Central for his junior season.

Besides offers from Baylor, Bradley, Illinois, Indiana and Notre Dame, the 6-3 guard has also received varying degrees of interest from DePaul, Georgetown, Kentucky, Miami, Ohio State, Purdue, and Virginia. With no clear favorites at this time, Richardson does not want to rush into make a commitment. ???‚¬?“I haven???‚¬?„?t sat down with my parents to talk about schools,???‚¬?? said Richardson."

Also....here is a report of the action in Champaign and in Peoria ...including Matt Roth
425865.jpg

"D.J. Richardson, (6-3) - Class of 2008, Peoria (IL), Peoria Central HS, AAU Team - Illinois Stars: It???‚¬?„?s very easy to see why scouts and DI colleges are taking more interest in his game. Yesterday in the semi-final game Richardson scored when needed and also ran the team. Being 6-3, Richardson will have to become more of a combo-guard and maybe try to settle in as a point. He???‚¬?„?s very smooth and finishes well. When he was younger some questioned his jump shot; now it looks as smooth as the rest of his game. He is a very physical guard that defends the perimeter well and will only get better. According to his father they both know D.J. must get stronger and they work on that each week.

Matt Roth, (6-3) - Class of 2008, ...Washington HS: The knock on Matt wasn???‚¬?„?t his ability to score, but his overall foot speed. For all those who haven???‚¬?„?t seen this kid play, keeping those same ???‚¬?“stereotyped???‚¬?? features with Roth is certainly not fair. He???‚¬?„?s quicker than last year during the state tournament run and works very hard on the defensive end of the floor. When you???‚¬?„?re 6-3 and can dribble across half-court and shoot the basketball consistently, there???‚¬?„?s a place for him at the college level. Matt scored 35 points on Saturday night and did so with ease ???‚¬??? shooting the ball, taking it to the basket and finishing. His overall game looks good. Matt will make some college coach look great because of his scoring capabilities.

Kannon Burrage, (6-1) - Class of 2009, East Moline (IL), UTHS, AAU Team - Quad City Select: After Kannon???‚¬?„?s first game against a 17U team, consisting of players from the Peoria Manual Rams, Burrage finished with 19 points and six assists. During the second round game, Burrage went head on with the Illinois Elite and had one of the most impressive performances of the entire tournament. Burrage finished the afternoon session with 32 points, racking up 24 by half time. His jump shot was unstoppable and when they closed out he went to the rack and finished. For most of the game he was face-guarded and even at times had to overcome a box-n-one. At one point during the game three other teams participating in the tournament stayed around to watch Burrage. He shot two three-pointers with two and three defenders hanging on his arm. After the game one of the officials walked by the scorers table and said, ???‚¬?“That???‚¬?„?s the best damn show I???‚¬?„?ve seen all spring long.???‚¬??

Crandall Head, (6-3) Class of 2010, Rich South (IL), AAU Team - Illinois Wolves: Is it right or wrong to compare Crandall to his brother and former Illini, Luther Head? I saw Luther play in high school and as of this moment, Crandall is a much better prospect. So what does that say for his future? The sky???‚¬?„?s the limit for this 6-3 guard. A lot of people talk about family genes when it comes to athletes and I can see why. This kid can flat out jump out of the gym and has a nice looking jump shot. What impressed me with Head was the fact that for such a young talent he has the complete game. When I saw Head play he reminded me a lot of his older brother, but a lot stronger. At this stage he crashes the boards hard and every single time he was able to push the ball up the court, creating shots for himself and teammates. The Illini could be in a unique situation if Head Coach Bruce Weber can land all the players he???‚¬?„?s going after in the next two to three years."

There's more, but I will save for later............

Nice find, the kid's a stud.
Would love to see him at BU, but it's a long, long shot.
Thanks for all the great finds and links, and pleeeease don't allow poker and wrestling on this board.

I get the impression or have a gut feeling Roth is no longer a priority for BU. Either he or BU/Les has decided to go another direction.

I get the feeling JL wanted a JC type committment and when he didn't get it.....we are moving on.

But didn't BU just promote a Washington grad to head assistant?

Washington Influence?

Washington Influence?

Here's a tidbit for what it's worth - an 'old reliable' coaching source from Dist 51 grade school noted that Matt is most probably headed to SIU!

Right now SIU is already ONE OVER THE LIMIT on scholarships for 2008.

Here is their "Scholarship Grid"
http://www.salukitalk.net/st/recruiting/BBallGrid.cfm?uid=875

Not only do they NOT have a scholarship available presently to offer to Matt, but they would actually have to jettison TWO present scholarship players in order to get an open one to offer him!
There have been rumors regarding Bocot, Armstrong, Cornelius....all of whom may end up somewhere else if they need a scholarship.

I will say that because of Bradleyfans, I get PM's from more people with rumors about Matt Roth than any other kid Bradley has recruited. Some rumors have him for sure going to Illinois, even if he has to walk-on, other rumors have him as a lock for St. Louis, Illinois State, or SIU. And yet others say when he's ready to decide, he will end up at Bradley.

I think all this simply means he hasn't made up his mind yet, and likes all these schools enough for such rumors to get started.

Da Coach said:
St. Louis University and Rick Majerus have gotten a committment from a 2007 shooting guard Paul Eckerle. He sounds like a player very similar to Matt Roth. Majerus has recently shown an interest in Roth.

http://story.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=2&c=649813

Eckerle is a 6-1 shooting guard, but he is a good one.
He shoots 44% from 3-point, and is a perfect 4.0 student, class valedictorian.

I want to see players at Bradley because they want to be at Bradley.
